insane poetry's grim reality? the "grim" side is kind of retarded horror movie stuff that cribbed from "mind of a lunatic" and it came out two years before the first gravediggaz album... the "reality" side is actually better, though, especially "manic depressive" and "till death do us part."

You could characterize a lot of Three-6-Mafia as horrorcore. Killa Klan Kaze (AKA The Kaze), an affiliated group, leans even more toward that.

Of course.

Yeah, heavy mental's quite dark. In a good way. Jedi Mind Tricks are also horrorists.

I might be made fun of for this, but I quite like Necro's first album. "Dancin' on your grave like Baryshnikov," etc.

litwack, Saturday, 22 October 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

Necro would be my answer too. I can't think of anything he's done I outwardly dislike. His production is usually pretty solid and on point; hell, look at how Sabac and Goretex's solo albums came out.

You can get the Flatlinerz album for like $2 almost anywhere. They were the only real "contemporaries" of the 'diggaz as far as I know.

Dalek bring the horror, but on a totally more cerebral/spiritual/sonic level.

Warcloud.

Mike Dixn (Mike Dixon), Sunday, 23 October 2005 20:47 (twenty years ago)

Search Warcloud, that is.

Does Brotha Lynch Hung count as horrorcore..? If so, "season of da sicness" is the one to check.

Anything from the eastcoast after Gravediggaz, frankly, sucks. If you're really, really interested check out Flatlinerz "usa (under satan's authority") cd which is just about passable. Flatlinerz were Def Jam's attempt to capitalize on the horrorcore genre and they only released that one cd in 1994 which bombed.

I guess the genesis of horrorcore would be Nas' verse on "live at the bar bq" and the pre-Gravediggaz releases to check are Big L "devil's son" 12", Grimm Reaper aka M.F Grimm "whatchu want nigga" 12" (both of which are worth finding, especially that Big L track which is incredible) and, as the guy near the top sez, the Rugged Man "night of the bloody apes" album, although it was never officially released and the only bootlegs/mp3s of it you can find are horrific quality. Don't worry - you're not missing out as it's shitty anyway.

Esham, Necro...it's all for Juggalo virgins who think it's cool to do crystal meth and sacrifice cats.
