Alex in NYC - do you like Play Dead?

I imagine you would, and I think they're not mentioned enough. If you haven't heard them, I think that you should at least try to hear "Break", "The Tenant", "Judgement", "No Motive", "Last Degree" and "Reward".

I listen to Play Dead when it begins to snow.

I dunno about Alex but I think they had their points.

I should do that - it might cheer me up. My bones are aching so much now that the weather is changing.

Those earliest tracks at the end of the "first flower" comp are just so awesome, apparently the band wrote them off, why?

Are they "T.V. Eye" and "Epitaph" and ones like that?

Pangolino 2, Friday, 21 October 2005 01:34 (twenty years ago)

If they are, I think the group had something of a faltering start, career-wise, until they changed guitarists and came out with "Propaganda". I like the early songs, too - I knew their "T.V. Eye" before the Stooges one.

Actually, the first record of theirs I bought was the "Conspiracy" 12", and I really didn't like it. It took me a while before I took a chance on another one. I still find "Conspiracy" quite grating, especially sitting through all 17 minutes or so of mixes on the 12", but maybe if people like the Sisterhood album they might have more tolerance for the kind of sound they were trying.

I didn't get around to hearing Play Dead until way after the fact. What I heard was fine, but strikes me that the weren't really pushing any envelopes (but I dare say I probably didn't hear enough of their stuff to elicit a credible opinion). Of this sort've stuff, I was more into the March Violets, Theatre of Hate/Spear of Destiny, the Bolshoi and of course the biggies like the Mish, the Nephs and the Sisters.

You know, I'm just realizing now that Play Dead really never had a shitkicker of a single like "All That I Wanted" - probably the closest they came was "Break" or "Propaganda", which even then would probably sound better if you already liked the band. I think they belonged closer to the Belfegore / Killing Joke end of this sort of music - they were less experimental than either of those groups, keeping mainly to one 'sound' through different records, but had a similar intelligence and viciousness that you might appreciate. They released quite a few singles, but it just dawned on me that a compilation of all the a-sides would be kind of underwhelming. If you ever feel like it, give the "Company of Justice" or "Into the Fire" albums a chance and they may grow on you.

five years pass...

Currently listening to the "Resurrection" compilation. Play Dead definitely seem like a slightly lesser March Violets, and MV's high points (Walk Into The Sun, Snake Dance) were awesome.
