TS: Neu! 75 vs. Faust/So Far

...because I'm trading in some CDs this weekend and I'll only be able to get one of 'em for now. I have Neu!s 1,2 and Faust IV and love them both (although "the sad skinhead" is getting exponentially more annoying with each listen).

poortheatre (poortheatre), Friday, 21 October 2005 01:52 (twenty years ago)

Neu '75...cuz it's gooderest.

bobby.lasers, Friday, 21 October 2005 02:05 (twenty years ago)

...or I can pick up Yeti. I don't have anything by the duul.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Friday, 21 October 2005 02:05 (twenty years ago)

Neu! fer "Hero" alone

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Friday, 21 October 2005 02:12 (twenty years ago)

Do you have the Harmonia albums?

Steev (Steev), Friday, 21 October 2005 02:18 (twenty years ago)

Just save up for the Faust box set. Overall, they're much more fun and more adventuresome than Neu!.

If you're really set on Neu!ish sounds, get the first Harmonia album instead.

I.M. (I.M.), Friday, 21 October 2005 02:23 (twenty years ago)

No, I don't have any Harmonia albums. Zuckerzeit was the first krautock album I really got into (well, after Trans-Europe Express), but the Harmonia imports are too expensive for me right now.

Faust box set, eh?

(googles)

Holy shit. It's mine*

*as soon as I get a job.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Friday, 21 October 2005 02:29 (twenty years ago)

Get Yeti, my favorite krautrock album

I've never been a fan of Neu! 75 past the first two (amazing) tracks--the vocals annoy me.

rw, Friday, 21 October 2005 02:37 (twenty years ago)

And I prefer The Faust Tapes to So Far.

rw, Friday, 21 October 2005 02:38 (twenty years ago)

vocal-wise if you love johnny rotten you'll love klaus dinger (i do, and do)

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Friday, 21 October 2005 02:42 (twenty years ago)

Yeti Yeti Yeti! It really is great.

Faust Tapes > So Far seconded, although that's my next favorite.

I just don't know about that Neu 75 album.

sleeve (sleeve), Friday, 21 October 2005 03:00 (twenty years ago)

Yeti > So Far > Neu 75

So Far > Faust IV

Neu 1 & 2 > Neu 75

But if I suddenly lost everything mentioned on this thread I think the Faust Tapes would probably be the first I'd buy again.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 21 October 2005 03:50 (twenty years ago)

Actually, you should try to find the 2-fer CD with the first Faust album + So Far on one disc. The first Faust is underrated and way better than Faust IV. 71 Minutes of Faust is also not a bad option (though a slow grower).

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 21 October 2005 03:52 (twenty years ago)

wolf city is better than yeti! yeah!

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 21 October 2005 03:52 (twenty years ago)

You know, I was blinded to that possibility for a long time but I think you may be right.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 21 October 2005 03:55 (twenty years ago)

Phallus Dei is better than both though.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 21 October 2005 03:56 (twenty years ago)

hahaha good luck finding that faust box, you'd want to find a store that actually has a copy because I had it on order for about six months with no luck.

haitch to the izz-o (haitch), Friday, 21 October 2005 04:02 (twenty years ago)

(it is worth looking for, though)

I'm siding with the neu! on this one.

haitch to the izz-o (haitch), Friday, 21 October 2005 04:06 (twenty years ago)

There are a bunch of used copies up on Amazon in the $60 range.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 21 October 2005 04:27 (twenty years ago)

haitch, I think I snagged the last copy from Synaesthesia a couple of years ago!

Sasha (sgh), Friday, 21 October 2005 05:03 (twenty years ago)

Faust So Far has It's a Rainy Day Sunshine Girl, which is not only better then anything else they did, it's better then everything Neu! did, or Can, or Amon Duul, or The Beatles or God for that matter. It's pretty much the best thing ever.

But as a record I enjoy Neu! 75 more.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 21 October 2005 06:56 (twenty years ago)

Neu! 75

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 21 October 2005 07:01 (twenty years ago)

I got that Faust box for £2 in a MVC chuckout. Actually I bought 2 and sold one on ebay.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 21 October 2005 07:49 (twenty years ago)

You bastard

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 October 2005 10:34 (twenty years ago)

Not a bastard. There were three in that shop so I left one for someone else.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 21 October 2005 11:22 (twenty years ago)

But not for me!

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 October 2005 11:24 (twenty years ago)

walter's first post is totally OTM.

petesmith (plsmith), Friday, 21 October 2005 12:21 (twenty years ago)

"sad skinhead song" is great! It's my favourite Faust number!

Another vote for "Yeti" from me anyway. Great, heavy, intense music.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 21 October 2005 12:24 (twenty years ago)

I say "Yeti" - not as good as anything by either Faust or Neu! but better than most

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 October 2005 12:28 (twenty years ago)

wait - if its not better than any faust or neu!, why shouldnt he buy one of those, dada?

petesmith (plsmith), Friday, 21 October 2005 12:29 (twenty years ago)

"Yeti" is the bee's knees.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 21 October 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

Who said he shouldn't? Oh right I see, instead of putting "-" in I should have put "is" (xpost)

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 October 2005 12:32 (twenty years ago)

Well, if he already has some Faust, "Yeti" is something different, perhaps?

I like "Yeti" better than anything by Faust or Neu, but then I like "Yeti" better than almost anything ever.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 21 October 2005 12:32 (twenty years ago)

It's all a bit daft as none of these three bands have got anything in common with each other whatsoever

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 October 2005 12:35 (twenty years ago)

True enough, I suppose.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 21 October 2005 12:37 (twenty years ago)

But fair enough, I suppose it's no worse than saying "I'm trying choose which album to buy between Hawkwind, Roxy Music or Henry Cow", for example

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 October 2005 12:39 (twenty years ago)

... tho those three overlap far more than Faust, Neu! and Amon Duul II

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 October 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

oh whatever - its silly to pretend theyre not pretty connected in all of our heads. they all have different approaches, its true, but its reasonable to compare them...

petesmith (plsmith), Friday, 21 October 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

right - exactly, dada.

petesmith (plsmith), Friday, 21 October 2005 12:42 (twenty years ago)

Wolf City IS better than Yeti. I've wanted to start a thread on that.

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Friday, 21 October 2005 12:55 (twenty years ago)

Well, it's different, I'm not sure that it's better, they're both very good

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 October 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

I like "Wolf City", especially the last song, with that electric violin over the top of it, but I don't think it's half as good as "Yeti".

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 21 October 2005 12:58 (twenty years ago)

Neu 75 = Led Zepellin II

Old School (sexyDancer), Friday, 21 October 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

That's my favourite Led Zeppelin album!

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 October 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

That's my favourite Neu! album!

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 21 October 2005 13:22 (twenty years ago)

Let's kiss!

Old School (sexyDancer), Friday, 21 October 2005 13:23 (twenty years ago)

Let's dust off this gem: jon williams has this to say about neu! 2:

I like Neu! ][ the best though. SO MUCH ACID

jw (ex machina), Friday, 21 October 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

Fuck acid

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 October 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

La! Neu? Live in Japan 1996 vol. 1 = 115 minute version of Cha Cha 2000

Old School (sexyDancer), Friday, 21 October 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

What a dreadful idea

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 October 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

... ha ha, they aren't very good tho, no rhythm section only a good guitarist, no wonder the Japanese like them

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 October 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

I preferred them when Manuel took up the synthesizer

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 October 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

Yea, the guitar is definitely the high point. I also just think that the drum recording sucked.

jw (ex machina), Friday, 21 October 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

Where was the bass player on their records? I mean apart from over in the corner of the studio out of this tree on acid? Also Klaus Schulze was a useless drummer.

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 October 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

Dude, a British person is complaining about someone else's rhythm....

jw (ex machina), Friday, 21 October 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

A German synthesizer player's rhythm, I think I have the right

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 October 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

Schulze was a really good drummer.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 21 October 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

Most drummers learn how to use their bass drum at some point or other

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 October 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

Me in an agreeing with Tim Ellison shocka. You're nuts dude; the drumming on "Join Inn" (which I am listening to now) is great.

xpost

What's with that constant cymbal tapping in jazz drumming?

jw (ex machina), Friday, 21 October 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

So you guys don't agree that every krautrock album is better than every other krautrock album? I thought I had an airtight case there.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 21 October 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

I hate using the term "krautrock" now because al the shite that gets called "krautrock" these days

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 October 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

What gets called Krautrock that shouldn't be called Krautrock.

jw (ex machina), Friday, 21 October 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

You can call anything Krautrock if you want, it never really meant anything then and it certainly doesn't mean much now

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 October 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

s/Krautrock/Emo/

jw (ex machina), Friday, 21 October 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

Uh oh, we already did this. See, it is a mobius strip!

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 21 October 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

It's almost like black metal drumming on "Amboss." And Enke is there. I agree that it would be nice to hear him better, but you can focus on his playing and he does seem to be very relentless and interesting.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 21 October 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

Oh no, I don't agree, it sounds to me like Enke has no fucking idea what he's doing - I imagine that's why they mixed him out of existence!

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 October 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

Anyway, I have a skewed perspective on "Krautrock" because I've been listening to the stuff for so frigging long - to me, Ash Ra Tempel, Guru Guru, even Amon Duul II, it's all very entertaining but it's not really the nub of the matter

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 October 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

And, to be honest, you'd probably be better off listening to Pink Floyd or Hawkwind than most Krautrock

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 October 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

... or even the Mothers of Invention... Jesus, did I just say that?!?!!??!

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 October 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

Pink Floyd never wrote a happy song though.

jw (ex machina), Friday, 21 October 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

They wrote plenty when Syd was in them, but not many when old fucking misery guts Waters wrested control

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 October 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

After that statement about the Mothers of Invention, I think it's time I signed off and went into music rehab for a month!

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 October 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

Who's sucking yours in that photo?

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 October 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

http://c.myspace.com/00020/39/30/20120393_l.jpg

jw (ex machina), Friday, 21 October 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)

No wonder he's got a smile on his face

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 October 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

I think you're making an assumption about Enke. You admit that it's hard to hear his articulations while on the other hand saying that you can hear them well enough to have come to the conclusion that he doesn't know what he's doing.

I think it was the soft tone of that Gibson he was playing. They didn't "mix him out of existence." Listen to "Amboss" around the 8:30-9:30 mark. He's actually at a reasonable volume.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 21 October 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

And, to be honest, you'd probably be better off listening to Pink Floyd or Hawkwind than most Krautrock

You're crazy. I can listen to every Hawkwind album on Monday and every Floyd album on Tuesday. WHAT DO I LISTEN TO THE REST OF THE WEEK?

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 21 October 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

Wednesday = every Can album
Thursday = every Kraftwerk album
Friday - every Neu! album
Saturday = every Faust album
Sunday = day of rest

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 October 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

Sunday = day of rest

Tangerine Dream then?

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 21 October 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

Sunday = day of rest of Krautrock bands

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 October 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

I just found my slant on KRock on ILM from two years ago (Jesus, have I been here that long?) It's what I still think and it's probably as useless to anyone else on the planet now as it was then:

1. Quintessential: Can/ Kraftwerk

2. Essential but not enough to prefaced by a Quint: Neu/ Faust/ Popol Vuh

3. Sehr gut: Cluster (and variants thereof)/ Harmonia

4. Very good in bits, not very good in other bits: Tangerine Dream (early to mid)/ Amon Duul II (till about 1973)

5. Entertaining but not especially original or different enough: Ash Ra Tempel/ Guru Guru (till 1973)/ Cosmic Jokers/ Agitation Free/ La Dusseldorf

6. Mediocre but with some interesting aspects: Tangerine Dream (later)/ Klaus Schulze (early)/ Embryo (1st album)/ Gila/ Witthuser & Westrupp/ Emtidi/ Annexus Quam/ Amon Duul/ Floh de Cologne/ Michael Rother/ Ashra

7. Rubbish - Klaus Schulze (everthing else)/ Embryo (the other albums I've heard)/ Guru Guru (after 1973)/ Amon Duul II (after 1973)/ Kraan/ Hoelderlin

8. Prog Rock (i.e., worse than rubbish) - Grobschnitt/ Wallenstein/ Novalis/ Eloy

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 21 October 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

... or even the Mothers of Invention... Jesus, did I just say that?!?!!??!

-- Dadaismus (dadaismus@ho

What the fuck? did you eat some dodgy rye bread yesterday or something?

ART are great, anyway. Some of the jams on that box set are a bit interminable, and shit like the "featuring rosi" (or whatever the fuck it's called) album, or that live in japan thing where they put raver kiddie four over their music (WTF?!?!?!?) are just impossible to understand, but when they're on one, they're fucking unstoppable.

Dude, a British person is complaining about someone else's rhythm....

-- jw (SUCCUMB

Fuck, man if you're talking about recent brit bands, fair comment, but this thread is all seventies shit, right? get one butler/ward, moon/entwhistle, collins/rutherford, bruford/squire, bruford/wetton, evans/hugh banton's feet etc etc etc. when and why did our rock musicians start sucking so hard, anyway?

(x-post, now I know you've been on the hallucinogens, I'f Id posted a thread putting popol vuh at no2 at anything, I'd want it hidden away for ever and ever!)!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 21 October 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

hahahahahah. I like Hawkwind.

jw (ex machina), Friday, 21 October 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

personally i'd say Neu! or Yeti

xpost to actual first question

nervous (cochere), Friday, 21 October 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

To recap, it looks like the score is

Neu 75 - 6 votes
Faust So Far - 6 votes
ADII Yeti - 3 votes

So according to science, poortheatre has to buy the Neu & the Faust.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 21 October 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

I'd vote for yeti

jw (ex machina), Friday, 21 October 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

I would vote for yeti

Orbit (Orbit), Saturday, 22 October 2005 06:16 (twenty years ago)

First two tracks on Neu! '75 promise greatness - they spend the rest of the album not delivering. At least when So Far is tedious I can find it amusing. It's the Faust album I play the most, even if I could never rank it above Tapes.

Deluxe (Damian), Saturday, 22 October 2005 08:01 (twenty years ago)

I like Dinger's punk songs on Neu! 75.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 22 October 2005 15:48 (twenty years ago)

Neu! wins! every! time!

King Money (King Money), Saturday, 22 October 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

Why is it that if you ask ILM to choose between any two things, the greatest consensus will be wrt to a third thing?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Saturday, 22 October 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

See, it is a mobius strip!

even if you say that every krautrock album is better than another, i fail to see how this is a moebius strip. it's a loop, sure. but there's nothing that says it has to be a moebius strip.

Dan Gr (certain), Saturday, 22 October 2005 17:32 (twenty years ago)

i am paying $50 for an OG copy of the 1st Cosmic Jokers album. Side one >>>> side two, but I feel like if I ever need to re-sell it on eBay, I will be making a profit. "investments."

Special Agent Dale Koopa (orion), Saturday, 22 October 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

i ended up staying at my gf's all weekend, so I didn't end up going to the record store. i'll keep ye updated, tho..

poortheatre (poortheatre), Sunday, 23 October 2005 03:45 (twenty years ago)

Why is it that if you ask ILM to choose between any two things, the greatest consensus will be wrt to a third thing?

It looks like Neu! won though.

i fail to see how this is a moebius strip.

Yeah, an already stupid joke doesn't get any better if you take it literally.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Sunday, 23 October 2005 06:11 (twenty years ago)

that it was a joke hadn't even dawned on me. i get it now. it helps when you spell it full on deutschig: möbius

Dan Gr (certain), Sunday, 23 October 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

I ponder at this debate.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 23 October 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

I'm kind of interested in the "krautrock is an expression of the infinite" theory, though. i feel like that's a worthwhile paper for someone to write to annoy his/her whitebread music professor.

Special Agent Dale Koopa (orion), Sunday, 23 October 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)
