What's brilliant? What do I need? My favourites from this year include Roots Manuva, Bloc Party, Patrick Wolf, Boards Of Canada, Polar Bear, British Sea Power, Guillemots, Elbow, etcetera etcetera...

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Friday, 21 October 2005 06:55 (twenty years ago)

I have to know what you've already got before I can advise on what to buy.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 21 October 2005 07:06 (twenty years ago)

Not having a list with me I'd say just suggest things and I'll say if I have them.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Friday, 21 October 2005 08:18 (twenty years ago)

Didn't you post a list of your collection somewhere on ILM? Maybe if you can remember the thread in question you could link and I can have a dekko.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 21 October 2005 08:27 (twenty years ago)

Indeed I did. It was on a thread about my new CD player. I'll see if i can find it.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Friday, 21 October 2005 08:27 (twenty years ago)

There have been a dozen or more additions since then, but it's here; AUDIOPHILES PLEASE - hi-fi sound problem.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Friday, 21 October 2005 08:28 (twenty years ago)

I see you haven't got the Shortwave Set album. That's the one to get!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 21 October 2005 08:30 (twenty years ago)

What did you do with the minidisc deck?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 21 October 2005 08:35 (twenty years ago)

Duly ordered from hmv.co.uk.

The MD deck is boxed and sitting on top of a wardrobe.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Friday, 21 October 2005 08:36 (twenty years ago)

Try the Hold Steady album Nick. You'd either love it or hate it.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 21 October 2005 08:46 (twenty years ago)

Gmail me stuff, Dom.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Friday, 21 October 2005 08:48 (twenty years ago)

Check yr account tonight Nicholas.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 21 October 2005 08:55 (twenty years ago)

The Acoustic Ladyland album, I guess obviously, although I suspect it was your review I read in a bundle with Polar Bear which makes this recommendation rather irrelevant.

Have you heard the Final Fantasy record? Oh - the new Broken Social Scene might be really interesting to you...

sean gramophone (Sean M), Friday, 21 October 2005 08:56 (twenty years ago)

Ted Leo

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 21 October 2005 09:00 (twenty years ago)

Broadcast - Tender Buttons.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Friday, 21 October 2005 09:03 (twenty years ago)

It was me who reviewed Acoustic Ladyland in with Polar Bear, aye. Broken Social Scene I've never heard.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Friday, 21 October 2005 09:05 (twenty years ago)

Dungen - Ta Det Lungt (last year)

white dolemite (White Dolemite), Friday, 21 October 2005 12:16 (twenty years ago)

Sick Mouthy, do you have the New Pornographers album? I'd call it brilliant.

Mickey (modestmickey), Friday, 21 October 2005 12:40 (twenty years ago)

That Cut Copy album is dead good, although it may have come out last year.

Neil Stewart (Neil Stewart), Friday, 21 October 2005 13:04 (twenty years ago)

Have you heard The Rakes' album, Nick? If so, what do you think? (Avoiding cryptic neutrality, I think about half of it is excellent.)

Nöödle Vägue (noodle vague), Friday, 21 October 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

Of Montreal's The Sunlandic Twins is really good too... sorry for two twee recommendations in a row if that kind of thing doesn't float your boat.

Mickey (modestmickey), Friday, 21 October 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

I am not keen on twee and have not heard The Rakes.

I ordered the new Broken Social Scene and the Shortwave Set.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Friday, 21 October 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

I liked The Mountain Goats and Magnolia Electric Co. Eh.

Mickey (modestmickey), Friday, 21 October 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

I kinda like the Occasion CD.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Friday, 21 October 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

I'd suggest Stars In Battledress - Secrets & Signals

mzui (mzui), Friday, 21 October 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

Okay, well I'd recommend you give The Rakes a listen, it's very Strokehead Ferdichiefs but the songs mostly are well above generic.

Nöödle Vägue (noodle vague), Friday, 21 October 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

roisin murphy - ruby blue
crazy frog - crazy hits

strongo hulkington's ghost (dubplatestyle), Friday, 21 October 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

This thread has made me realize that there was very little non-experimental (drone type stuff, psych, etc) things this year that I really liked.

Mickey (modestmickey), Friday, 21 October 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

SUN KIL MOON - TINY CITIES

bingo (Chris V), Friday, 21 October 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

Check out Field Music - you can stream a few songs here.

Jackson and His Computer band - Smash

It's tits!

Nick - I'd like to see what you'd make of Chromehoof.

dog latin (dog latin), Saturday, 22 October 2005 01:10 (twenty years ago)

The Deadly Snakes - Porcella. Album of the year, no doubt.

The Fightin' Side of Me, Saturday, 22 October 2005 01:46 (twenty years ago)

I'm enjoying Deerhoof quite a bit

Super Cub (Debito), Saturday, 22 October 2005 01:59 (twenty years ago)

Hi Nick, some quiet and beautiful records:

King Creosote - KC Rules OK
The Clientele - Strange Geometry
Syd Matters - Someday We Will Foresee Obstacles

zeus (zeus), Saturday, 22 October 2005 06:39 (twenty years ago)

Syd Matters - Someday We Will Foresee Obstacles

Would agree here. The only problem is that I completely forget how good it is unless it's actually playing at the time.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 22 October 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

A Frames - Black Forest

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Saturday, 22 October 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

Has no one mentioned Super Furry Animals? It hasn't exactly knocked my socks off, but it's a really nice record.

Super Cub (Debito), Saturday, 22 October 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

Based on the list..
Modeselektor - Hello Mom
And Deerhoof thirded

mox twelve (Mox twleve), Saturday, 22 October 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

Actually, you're fourthing Deerhoof. But that just means one more person likes it.

Super Cub (Debito), Saturday, 22 October 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

Mm, right, miscount there. Yeah, I liked Runners Four alot, actually. A sterling assault. I even forced my weaned-on-radio friends to listen, and they enjoyed it. I think.

mox twelve (Mox twleve), Saturday, 22 October 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

Wolf Parade's eponymous EP, if that came out this year. Perceptionists' Black Dialogueis in the process of being slept on.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Saturday, 22 October 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

Archer Prewitt - Wildnerness

I first heard it in the beginning of the year but I never *really* listened to it. I have now in the past 3 days and it's easilly one of the best albums I've heard this year. Great arrangements, melodies and lyrics. Stylus gave it an A.

Lovelace (Lovelace), Saturday, 22 October 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

Try Oceans Apart by the Go-Betweens, best of their reunion cds.

Jim Reckling (Jim Reckling), Sunday, 23 October 2005 12:14 (twenty years ago)

Has no one mentioned Super Furry Animals? It hasn't exactly knocked my socks off, but it's a really nice record.

earlier i scoffed when sick called them boring but the new sfa is really boring. so, i recant my earlier comment.

keyth (keyth), Sunday, 23 October 2005 12:35 (twenty years ago)

Here's a vote for Metric's Live It Out.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Sunday, 23 October 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

Based on the list, definitely check out:

The Joggers - 'With a Cape and a Cane'

Patrick South (Patrick South), Sunday, 23 October 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

Here's a vote for Metric's Live It Out.

I've been enjoying it quite a bit... but my attempts to start a thread on it were greeted by a choir of derisive snorts from respectable parties, so I've shut up.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 23 October 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

thread tastes real indie

c7n (Cozen), Sunday, 23 October 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

I have the SFA - it's boring.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Sunday, 23 October 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

The new Rogue Wave (I think it comes out Tuesday) is a very good album. Much better than their first, IMO.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Sunday, 23 October 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

I would agree that the SFA is somewhat boring, but sometimes I like to listen to unremarkable loveliness. I understand how some people wouldn't get into it, though.

Deerhoof isn't boring (at least to my ears).

Super Cub (Debito), Sunday, 23 October 2005 17:33 (twenty years ago)
