bastards. things get screwed up sometimes but this is so obviously the record label's incompetent fault, you'd think any one of them at EMI would have a sense of conscience about having fucked the man over like that...

He's a bit of a fool if he has been making records since the mid 70's and not enquiring about his own finiancial standing within the company until recently.

I know EMI's accountantcy dept are really bad, stories are legion, but what about Nelson's publishing company? surely his mechanical royalties were being paid to the company his old manager set up?

Wouldn't Nelson be little suspucious if he never recieved statements/money from the PRS or even worse statements without the money, or has he been living off publishing all these years alone? either way something doesn't add up.

all of your questions were directly answered in his post, perhaps you should just re-read it

they told him that he hadn't recouped the costs of their initial advance, mzui

Maybe you should both re-read my post, there's no mention of any publishing money, only royalties from record sales. I was kinda curious from a publishing angle, because I'd have thought that the company that his ex manager set up early on( the one that EMI's accountants cited as their first shady excuse) would have filtered through his MCPS & PRS payments, and assuming it did, why wasn't he more aware of the situation.

ah, I see. I do get the sense that he left an unfortunate number of business details to managers. I agree that artists need to be tediously aware of their own finances when dealing with labels but I wince when the victim gets blamed.

Thing is, you cannot go to a record label and be nice and ask them for money with a good reason behind it. You have to go in with a fuckoff lawyer on your side.
