7th Inning Stretch "God Bless America." Go figure.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Sunday, 23 October 2005 01:25 (twenty years ago)

then she screamed I HATE YOU INDIE BOYS STOP MASTURWANKING TO ME

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!, Sunday, 23 October 2005 01:28 (twenty years ago)

Man, she really didn't have the voice for that. I was hoping people in the stadium understood that it was cool to sing kind of flat and affectless.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Sunday, 23 October 2005 02:36 (twenty years ago)

I fucked, and THEN RAN!

heavy dood, Sunday, 23 October 2005 04:58 (twenty years ago)

Haha, I was at dinner with friends local and from Minneapolis visiting, and we all turned around and saw the Liz on the restaurant TV above. The sounds wasn't on though. I think ESTEBAN was OTM as to the actual lyrics. (at least i hope.)

iDonut B4 x86 (donut), Sunday, 23 October 2005 06:01 (twenty years ago)

It was all about Emo Philips on the guee-tar though.

iDonut B4 x86 (donut), Sunday, 23 October 2005 06:03 (twenty years ago)

"God Bless America."

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Sunday, 23 October 2005 11:35 (twenty years ago)

it was a very girlysoundish performance -- the watery guitar, the reedy vocals. well, you know, as girlysoundish as god blessing america can get, anyway.

maura (maura), Sunday, 23 October 2005 12:16 (twenty years ago)

Are Shellac out of town or something?

Andy_K (Andy_K), Sunday, 23 October 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

i can't wait until urge overkill does 'take me out to the ballgame'!

maura (maura), Sunday, 23 October 2005 12:40 (twenty years ago)

drat---you beat me to it... x-post

I hear Nash Kato is going to sing the national anthem tonight.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Sunday, 23 October 2005 12:42 (twenty years ago)

If they were really smart they'd get Terry Callier.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Sunday, 23 October 2005 12:43 (twenty years ago)

Who they should get is Lou Rawls, as he is an honest to goodness southsider and that bassy voice is pure butter.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Sunday, 23 October 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

from your post to the bookers' ears: he's singing the national anthem tonight.

maura (maura), Sunday, 23 October 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

Who did they have sing the national anthem last night? Who's doing the 7th inning stretch tonight?

I guess R. Kelly won't be asked? I'd settle for Chicago house or blues singers, but that's not likely either.

Steve K (Steve K), Sunday, 23 October 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

National anthem last night: Josh Groban (ick).

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 23 October 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

You mean they couldn't get Carl Lewis to sing in Chicago again?

van igloo (van smack), Sunday, 23 October 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

i wish r. kelly would perform!! alas, the seventh-inning stretch tonight will feature chris botti, a trumpet player.

"Famed trumpeter and the talented composer Chris Botti is one of today's most popular contemporary jazz musicians. Botti, picked as one of People Magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People" in 2004, has earned both critical acclaim and mainstream appreciation. In the studio and on stage, Botti has collaborated with countless leading musicians, such as Sting, Joni Mitchell, Natalie Merchant, Paula Cole and Paul Simon."

maura (maura), Sunday, 23 October 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

If you want to see Nash Kato get sports-ballady, rent Kingpin

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 23 October 2005 15:31 (twenty years ago)

i couldn't remember what UO sang again, but acc. to some site it was "star-spangled banner"

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 23 October 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

Back in Houston, of course, the Geto Boys will handling "God Bless America."

merritt ranew (merritt), Sunday, 23 October 2005 15:52 (twenty years ago)

GOD BLESS WHO? MIKE JONES

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 23 October 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

asl, Sunday, 23 October 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

Who they should get is Lou Rawls, as he is an honest to goodness southsider and that bassy voice is pure butter.

-- Earl Nash (stereo99_9...), October 23rd, 2005. (later)

Well, there you are -- but he sounded *horrible* to my ears. And the way his right eye clenched shut every time he aimed for (and missed) a higher note, as if unwilling to bear witness, was troubling.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Monday, 24 October 2005 07:03 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, Lou wasn't sounding too good last night. Who did the 7th inning stretch? Missed it while doing housework.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Monday, 24 October 2005 11:25 (twenty years ago)

I didn't get back to catch the beginning of the game. Sorry to hear that Lou didn't bring the goods, but I still give some props to the Sox for giving a local guy the call as I figured it would not happen.

I do like the idea of Shellac doing God Bless America, that would be swell.

For the Astros, they need to call ZZ Top to play Heaven, Hell or Houston in medley with the Star Spangled Banner.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 24 October 2005 11:47 (twenty years ago)

For the Astros, they need to call ZZ Top

I'd much rather they got Archie Bell & the Drells. Is Arch still with us?

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Monday, 24 October 2005 21:04 (twenty years ago)

Pure butter usually doesn't stand up so hot in cold drizzles.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Monday, 24 October 2005 21:08 (twenty years ago)

Archie is still around. He did a live show on KPFT a few months back and said George W. Bush was shit.

General Doinel (Charles McCain), Monday, 24 October 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

And right after he said it, he said "Yeah, you heard me. I said shit on the radio."

General Doinel (Charles McCain), Monday, 24 October 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

I saw on some rap blog that Paul Wall's got a new cut out about the Astros. Maybe he'll 'screw' God Bless America.

Steve K (Steve K), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 01:35 (twenty years ago)

here are the lyrics:

here are the lyrics

also, big and rich will sing the anthem if there's a game 5.

maura (maura), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

agh, sorry, i never got a message that those posted

maura (maura), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

Finally my dreams of hearing a Drayton McLane rhyme are realized.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

I noted this in another thread, but Fox just used Franz Ferdinand's "Michael" in the intro to tonight's World Series Game 3. No lyrics, just the music, but that to me is just as WTF as Liz Phair singing "God Bless America." Well, maybe not quite as much. But still.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 23:38 (twenty years ago)

They use all kinds of stuff as intro and outro music.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 23:41 (twenty years ago)

Aaron Neville did a nice job on God Bless America in the 7th inning tonight. I missed the national anthem earlier. I just heard parts of the Clash's "Remote Control" as background music for Fox's look back at highlights of the game!

Joe Buck just said that some of the White Sox are using Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" (I'm not sure of exact title) as their theme. They've invited Journey singer Steve Perry to the games. Ugh.

Steve K (Steve K), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 02:19 (twenty years ago)

Neville's physical tics weirded me. His mouth contortions and teeth clenches made it seem like the mic was made of foul cheese and he was wincing his way through the whole thing.

And the Fox highlights also included, cleverly, Muse's "Time Is Running Out." Didn't think it was that well known.
