VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 23 October 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

Here'a mine:

1. "Wild World" live from Nick's solo tour of I think 2002, featuring a feisty Warren Ellis doing some demonic fiddlin' - best live Nick Cave song I've ever seen/heard (I'm taking some Birthday Party liberties here, sorry)

On that note:

2. "Sonny's Burning" for being my favorite BP song, with the greatest intro ever - "Hands up- Who wants to die?"

3. "The Mercy Seat"

(Ok, I just realized I don't really have a numeric preference with any of these- everything sort of rates according to my preferred Nick Cave experience- #1 being "live", #2 being "The Birthday Party", #3 being "Tender Prey is my favorite Bad Seeds album, so Mercy Seat goes here", etc.)

4. "Tupelo" (either the live version or original- great song)

5. "The Ship Song"

6. "From Her To Eternity"

7. "The Carny" (this should actually be up a few, as it reminds me of the need to throw a serious nod to "Wings of Desire" as being a huge part of having the complete Nick Cave experience)

8. "Red Right Hand"

9. "Where The Wild Roses Grow" live, so Blixa does the Kylie lyrics (well, he used to anyway)

10. "Deanna"

Oh man - I didn't even rep "Henry's Dream"!

jsoulja (jsoulja), Sunday, 23 October 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

See, I kinda forgot about The Carny, and I was also thinking of putting Get Ready for Love on the list too. Ten is just arbitrary, right?

when something smacks of something (dave225.3), Sunday, 23 October 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

Oh and if anyone has a bootleg of that solo tour (ref: my list #1) a few years back- For God's Sake, post it for downloading here.

It was BRILLIANT.

jsoulja (jsoulja), Sunday, 23 October 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

nick cave live solo @ wiltern theater coming up, buckaroo.

Special Agent Dale Koopa (orion), Sunday, 23 October 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

That was generous of you- I was hoping he might just fuck off and die.

I'd rather he suffer slowly for a while.

This is a good thread to inquire about the fate of Rowalnd S Howard- does anyone know the story of what happened to him? Last I heard was the very sub-par "Teenage Snuff Film", and nothing since.

I girl from Melbourne I met a few weeks ago says he still plays out in tiny bars once in a while and both looks and sounds terrible.

Anyone have anything to add?

jsoulja (jsoulja), Monday, 24 October 2005 03:00 (twenty years ago)

I was just listening to that one These Immortal Souls album from 1992 the other day. All right but I remembered why I don't listen to it much.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 October 2005 03:01 (twenty years ago)

Hey Ned, let's maybe POX a run-down of favorite Nick Cave rarities, side projects, and one-offs here, too?

Or should we start another thread? Six degrees of Bad Seeds or something?

I'll need to think on this a little, so I'll post tomorrow.....

jsoulja (jsoulja), Monday, 24 October 2005 03:03 (twenty years ago)

GOD BLESS YOU YSI-ERS!

and following on from the last, does anyone have the b-sides from Anita Lane's The World's A Girl single? I bought the 7" for clear-vinyl sexiness but the shit pressing isn't very iPod-friendly, ten years later...

kit brash (kit brash), Monday, 24 October 2005 07:55 (twenty years ago)

alex in nyc more like DUMB BUTT

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!, Monday, 24 October 2005 08:39 (twenty years ago)

alex in nyc more like DUMB BUTT

Go enjoy some cock.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 24 October 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

Er, but Alex, many around here do enjoy cock.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 October 2005 16:00 (twenty years ago)

This is true, and I think Esteban would do well do belly up to nice, big, piping-hot bowl of fresh, greasy cock, as he's clearly frustrated these days.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 24 October 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

Ok guys, enough with the cock- this is a NICK CAVE thread for Christ's sake. Integrity and respect need to be maintained!

Plus I always thought Nick was more of a whiskey man - maybe a fifth of the plastic bottle variety poured straight down the throat of Esteban would be a better course of action. That should clear up his attitude....

Plus he's calling you a dumb butt while signing his name Buttez. I think we can leave it at that.

jsoulja (jsoulja), Monday, 24 October 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

And what of my "six degrees" idea? We've got a family tree that covers Crime & The City Solution, Magazine, Dirty Three, Die Haut, etc. Time better spent running down lists of extensions and what not.

Barry Adamson was in fucking Visage! We need a catch-all for all these connections.....

POO Bad Seeds spin-off thingummy:
"These Boots Are Made For Walking," Barry Adamson & Anita Lane (12" and video)

POX Nick Cave peripheral moments:

pink I Love Take That shirt and skinny-white-jean hip-thrust on "fucked Billy Dilly in his MOTHERFUCKIN' ASS", Stagger Lee video

the half-embarrassed-for-knowing-what-Bragg's-going-to-say smirk that creeps onto his face when Billy Bragg, operating the camera, approaches him while running a spiel about how as the father of young boys, blah blah etc - smirk appears - then Bragg directs him to turn side-on so that the viewer can see how Cave's bodily profile matches that of "the Cat In The 'At", Ritual Habitual documentary

the biggest Nick Cave fan of my Nick Cave fan friends in high school getting his forehead cut open by a bottle of water hurled from the stage by Cave, Big Day Out 1993

that Birthday Party -era promo photo where he's putting gunfingers to his head through an exploding goffwig, possibly with a sunglassed Rowland or Mick hanging off his shoulder, found torn from a magazine and left in the book drawer of a school desk, 1988

the eventually-duelling "Hands up who wants to die!" and "garn get fucked" samples in TISM's Give Up For Australia, Machiavelli & The Four Seasons

the montage of different arrangements for live versions of The Mercy Seat, South Bank Show

the way Jack Barron's colleagues at the NME seemed to take his kicking as a PERFECTLY LEGITIMATE REACTION to the journalist's behaviour, IPC 1988 & passim

both Cave anecdotes in Rollins' Black Flag tour diaries - one where he and Blixa had largely taken over a largely-abandoned hotel, and one where various Seeds and Rollins invade an Australian film industry party in LA,

the 50,000 strong gasp of shock as the balding Cave emerged onstage with his new sealskin Ben Folds haircut, Homebake 2003

his current muzzie, possibly grown especially to promote The Proposition, but possibly for its own sake, who knows?, see all recent promo/red carpet/TV interview shots

Charlie Howard, Saturday, 14 April 2007 18:47 (nineteen years ago)

His/their performance of "Red Right Hand" seen in the new Julien Temple film Glastonbury is freaking fantastic. Best part of the whole film.

Bimble, Sunday, 15 April 2007 03:29 (nineteen years ago)

Haha...also I just remembered I pulled out my ancient black Bad Seeds T-Shirt last night. I hadn't seen it for years, and I didn't mean to seek it out, I was just looking around for a T-shirt in the closet and there it was. That thing is falling apart. It's 9 years old. But who knows how to give music T-Shirts proper funerals? I don't.

Bimble, Sunday, 15 April 2007 03:32 (nineteen years ago)

Your Funeral My Trial, hehehe.

Bimble, Sunday, 15 April 2007 03:32 (nineteen years ago)

Anyway there's just no way I could do a list of my fave ten songs of his. No way. Most of them are on Boatman's Call, but still, that is an impossible task.

Bimble, Sunday, 15 April 2007 03:38 (nineteen years ago)

i would probably pick a big handful of songs from abattoir/orpheus for my ten...i think it's far and away the best thing he's done in his entire career, bar none
