This song is APESHIT. I wish more of their singles sounded this crazy. The guitars are fantastic.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Sunday, 23 October 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

It is originally a Mike Oldfield song so he should also get some of the blame/credit for the mentalness.

Bizarre song. Great, but probably one of their lesser 80s hits.

Leave Me Alone, I'm a Family Man, and My Bark is Much Worse Than My Bite....

Leave Me Alone, I'm a Family Man, and if you Push Me Too Far, I Just Might

Always wondered.....if you push him too far, he just might what? Bark or bite?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 23 October 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

Bite, I think.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Sunday, 23 October 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

It's the not knowing which adds to the song's tautness, giving it such an eerie feel. Unsurprising, since Daryl & John so fucking RULE.

They were recording (separately) with different local bands in the early Sixties, IIRC.

Which means Daryl was about 35 at the time of I Can't Go For That.

Family Man is the worst song on the Mike Oldfield album Five Miles Out, which is otherwise probably his last consistent record.

Daryl Hall (I presume) gets credit for actually writing an end to the story rather than redundantly repeating the same information in the verse the way the original did.

and for being a better singer

Patriotic Goiter (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 16 November 2020 23:12 (five years ago)

Well, Maggie Reilly was the singer on the record.
