Were many of them even allowed to make albums?

And Rhino's second Doo Wop box is pretty swell too. The third, however, is lackluster and features "new" doo wop-style tracks from a host of weak artists. I know of few even reasonably good doo wop albums - it was a singles genre at a time when albums of nearly any sort were loaded with filler.

dude! and while we're on unstoppable motherfuckers, ya got andre williams too!!!!! disappeared in the 70s after a lengthy career of the bangin'-est shit ever for doo-wop soul, and raw funk. but he's back now too...

for doo-wop get the cd called "mr. rhythm"
it's a compilation of all his early singles. i think a doo-wop album is kind of an oxymoron...

Doo wop albums weren't unheard of, though (not counting "best ofs" and various artists sets). The Drifters had a few, as did Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, the Four Seasons, Little Anthony and the Imperials, and Dion and the Belmonts. Although many of these LPs were cut in the early 60's, when albums were more common than in the 50's.

Litte Anthony and the Imperials did a very good "concept album" (of sorts) of older "tin-pan-alley" standards, titled -Shades of the 40's- (of course) in 1961. It's been reissued on CD from Westside (the UK label) and it's definitely worth a buy.

I don't think so. But, as you observed, you needed him to complete your triple. Jonathan Richman is a fan too.

ten years pass...

going so far down the rabbit hole of regional doo wop compilations the past couple of years. dudes who get ahold of master tapes that ought by rights to be in the hands of the r&rhof but aren't & do these loving faithful sonic treatments to make em crisp and then issue them on CD in runs of 1000 with two-color cover art because who wants to spring for a four-color job
