It's not often I give a track a thread entirely of its own, but I have to give this its own thread, I can't stop listening to it.

What an amazing record! This record is like the best indie feelings combined with the best electrohouse ones.

YSI on the way for anyone who missed the first one.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 11:40 (twenty years ago)

Is that the lady from the Knife singing?

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 12:02 (twenty years ago)

It is yeah, part of the reason for its excellence I guess.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 12:03 (twenty years ago)

Great production on this but the vocals rub me up the wrong way.

Good Dog (Good Dog), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 12:07 (twenty years ago)

It's full of great bits but they don't seem to run together for me yet. Obviously, yeah, office, computer, headphones, hardly the right environment.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 12:08 (twenty years ago)

please gmail me this someone?

when i get home internet back i want a BANK of stuff in my inbox to feast on! til then though i am sad that i can't hear it now now now.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 12:08 (twenty years ago)

I've just heard Knife lady come in and realise that the original mix of this is what I heard in Gap the other week and thought was ace.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 12:10 (twenty years ago)

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 12:11 (twenty years ago)

I think The Knife's lead singer (her name is Karin I believe?) has a very adaptable voice for dance music. The Mandy remix of Pass it On and the Rex the Dog remix of Heartbeats also kill. Perhaps she should live in Germany a month a year to be a session vocalist.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 12:11 (twenty years ago)

I actually was going to say the general health of electro poppy stuff has been really good for more club orientated stuff, there are so many releases that come out where you know the pop act can supply enough character for a really good producer to make something really crazy and clubby but also quite affecting.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 12:13 (twenty years ago)

Lex do you still need a gmail? or is a YSI enough? I can gmail it if you want.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 12:15 (twenty years ago)

Hence we get Booka Shade remixing twee-poppers Tahiti 80.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 12:15 (twenty years ago)

argh xpost

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 12:15 (twenty years ago)

I think what that means for the likes of me now is that the remixes do impressive stuff technically but I end up preferring the original still, as may be the case again here.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

ronan a gmail would be v much appreciated! (no home internet, can't download, feel like limb has been amputated)

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 12:18 (twenty years ago)

I think, for me, this one actually has everything the original had and more, like even the quiet bit is more deftly produced, something about the way the strings well up in the breakdown is so much more affecting, and I did like the original alot but it was a bit of a used style I thought, the Trentemoller one has this really weird dramatic, almost cinematic feel to the breakdown, which I didn't get in the original so much, good and all as it was.

(then it has a ridiculously ott pay off!)

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

thanks for this

Dominique (dleone), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 12:29 (twenty years ago)

OMG!!!!!!!!! This is the hugest thing ever.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

best track off of "the understanding" + one of my favorite voices + best remixer right now = this

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

btw, has anyone heard the knife stina nordenstam remix? also interesting.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 13:25 (twenty years ago)

there's a knife stina nordenstam remix?? OMG OMG OMG

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

yes, it is pretty bonkers.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

Which Stina track?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

"parliament square"

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

i'm trying and failing to imagine it.

Ronan did you ever hear the Thomas Brinkmann remix of Depeche Mode's "I Feel Loved" from a few years ago? It sort of anticipated Trentemoller's remix sound (also probably the most populist think Brinkmann's ever done).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

stina's vocals are heavily processed and end up sounding like a guy. it is eerie and beautiful...

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

check 20 jazz funk greats. don't want to hotlink.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

I love this mix too - snagged some of the other Trentemoller mixes from the YSI thread and they've been kicking my ass lately. Who is this dude? I wish there was a club/night to hear this type of stuff in Toronto instead of endless places playing crap mainstream house, etc... Time to start up my own club night again, methinks...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

Rob, don't know much about him except that he used to make plush deep house for Naked Music et. al. and now makes weird trippy electro (ketamine) house.

He has released some pretty high-profile singles over the last 12 months - "Beta Boy", "Physical Fraction", "Polar Shift", "Sunstroke", a few others - each one usually weirder and more psychedelic but less anthemic than the last. The remixes are a bit more peak time.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

he is the golden boy right now, everything he touches is amazing. he did a remix of that unai single also.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

Being at the beginning of that list of singles, "Beta Boy" is pretty fuckin' massive.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

Sharon Phillips - want 2 need 2 (Trentemoller Remix) ysi

Good Dog (Good Dog), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

shit, between trentemoller and dahlback remixes alone you could paste together a pretty awesome DJ set...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

fred everything "friday" (trentemoller remix)

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

that and the unai one OMG

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

"he used to make plush deep house for Naked Music et. al. and now makes weird trippy electro (ketamine) house"

Oh man, you do not have a clue ... have you heard "Le Champagne" or "In Progress"?

"Beta Boy" is pretty fuckin' massive" and "weird trippy electro (ketamine) house"

And "In Progress" is "plush deep house".

I am sorry but I am fed up with this snobbery.
Both tracks are pure Trentemoller, both are amazing, BUT ... one is on a hip label Danish label, and the other one on a untrendy big American one.

ifeelspace, Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

"Oh man, you do not have a clue ... have you heard "Le Champagne" or "In Progress"? "

I don't mean "plush" as an insult. I love "Le Champagne"! I haven't heard "In Progress" i don't think.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

(I mostly use "plush" as a compliment actually, which may be a bit odd. I always describe the second Luomo album as "plush" and that was my favourite album of 2003).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:23 (twenty years ago)

Big plush Trentemoller recommendation: "Hug A Stranger". Not mentioned upthread because it's very different to the stuff being discussed in this thread. To make any such distinction at all is apparently a sign of gross snobbery these days!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

gross

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

Cutty that Stina remix is great, thanks for the tip! The beats remind me a lot of Bjork's "Hunter".

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

anyone who has time and inclination, please gmail me trentemoller remixes. any, all.

*weeps for lost internet*

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

ALSO THAT STINA RMX!!!

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, I meant "Liquid Dreams" when I said "Hug A Stranger" just then.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

I mostly use "snobbery" as a compliment actually, which may be a bit odd.

ifeelspace, Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

Can you please YSI "Liquid Dreams"?

nocure, Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

Don't have the CD with me, but will try to do later.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

thanks for the ysi, ronan...this is kind of like the maximalist version of superpitcher's "the dream of evan and chan" remix.

i have yet to hear the unai remix, but unai are pretty great on their own. love "beta boy".

tricky (disco stu), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

also see Malou "I Wish" for Trentemoller "re-adjustment" in a "plush" mode. It's not like he's totally removed from smoother/softer styles - but recently, you definitely don't hear this from him

Dominique (dleone), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

i have "liquid dreams", should i ysi? (it's such a huge contrast between the royksopp remix!)

tricky (disco stu), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

I wonder what Trentemoller's like as a DJ?!?

he played in glasgow recently and all reports were that he was fab. apparently he scratches a lot. i really like a lot of his stuff but find i have to edit out a few bits before i can play them. well, on the unai and royksopp anyway. the fred everything is great too but my fave is the sharon phillips. rock the bells!

stirmonster (stirmonster), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

wonder what Trentemoller's like as a DJ?!?
Anyone has seen a playlist from the guy?

nocure, Tuesday, 25 October 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

weird, the Sharon Philips I can't really get madly into.

The Mathias Schafhauser is the one I've played the most I'd say. It is crazy.

Which parts do you edit out stirmonster?

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

i'm assuming the breakdowns? twitch doesn't want people to stop dancing!

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

I like the breakdowns! I tend to think of Trentemoller mixes as those tunes where Erol Alkan would fellate himself while standing on the mixer with his vodka aloft. No offence to him, that is an essential part of his show.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

Which parts do you edit out stirmonster?

hee - all the vocals which is kind of odd as i usually play lots of songs, but her out of the knife does my nut in. with the unai, i just use the last third of it. i might like the sharon phillips so much because i love 'rock the bells' / the 'mardi gras break' and also because it samples an old and much loved danish rave classic called 'kaos' by dr. baker.

ps - ronan, if you see jon, tell him i'll email him imminently about backlash. i've been away for a week and have an email backlog i should be attending to rather than posting on here.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

nah cutty, i love breakdowns more than sasha :-)

stirmonster (stirmonster), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

but unai are pretty great on their own

OTM. I wish Unai got more love around here (I also wish he made more records).

jeffery (jeffery), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

Royksopp-What Else Is There (Trentemoller Remix)
I have been listening o this track on my way home and it is: awful.
Sounds like Siouxie and the Banshees (at their worst).

ifeelspace, Tuesday, 25 October 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

a Trentemoller set: Proton Radio - Particles 1.05.05

http://s36.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0J6GLDCNS3T6T1LZ8KSI0HCJAL

jergins (jergins), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

Wow, ifeelspace, just... wow.

nancyboy (nancyboy), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

This song sounds a LOT like Brother Brown - Under The Water!

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

ps - ronan, if you see jon, tell him i'll email him imminently about backlash. i've been away for a week and have an email backlog i should be attending to rather than posting on here.

yeah sure, he gets very touchy about unreturned emails, he will eventually use the all caps, especially if he's asked you to bring a clipboard with you or something, haha!

should be a great night, we've really hit another level lately, in terms of numbers and also enthusiasm. I couldn't sleep with exceitement after the last time I played it was so crazy.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

I didn't realise this had been released as a single, but I guess they have finally unleashed the best track off the "Understanding" album then.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

I like it a lot..
Generally not into the knife ladies singing but I like it here for some reason.

Bn1 (Bn1), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 00:26 (twenty years ago)

"Wow, ifeelspace, just... wow."
I mean: the voice, the type of song (sort of pre-goth), the bass guitar ... sounds too familiar to me, like a Siouxie out-take, all wrapped in a electro production circa 1984.
What's good about electronic/techno/dance music is INNOVATION, and this sounds old to me. Too formulaic, too retro.

ifeelspace, Wednesday, 26 October 2005 07:25 (twenty years ago)

It is reminiscent of Siouxsie, but sonically it sounds very 2005. What do you think would be more innovative, ifeelspace? I mean, leaving aside the more complex arrangements that Trentemoller does on some of his own recent stuff...and I think Ronan is right that this more straightahead stuff (i.e. the non-electrohorsetranqmoller stuff) is easily equal of his more out-there moments.

But then I tend to like any house music which sounds like Siouxsie/Depeche Mode ("micro-goth" etc.). Did anyone else ever check out that Vredus remix of Blumfeld's "Neuer Morgen" that I used to big up round these parts? Still great.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 08:19 (twenty years ago)

ah, 'Under The Water' - i would never gave mind that connection i don't think Siegbran!

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 08:35 (twenty years ago)

"What do you think would be more innovative, ifeelspace?"
Think of Jesse Somfay latest 12" (Fragile Addiction). It is dark (call it goth if you like) and still sounds like nothing else. Sounds really 2005.
Nothing wrong with having roots, influences. But they have to be taken a step further ... or you end up being the Brand New Heavies leading the Acid Jazz revival. Anyone remember this? First time you hear you smile, third time you are bored and go for the original.

ifeelspace, Wednesday, 26 October 2005 08:51 (twenty years ago)

I think the appeal of the production on the Trentemoller is that is very 2005. It doesn't sound retro to me. Somehow he always manages to sound like he's squeezing even *more* than the last guy out of his gear.

Good Dog (Good Dog), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 09:11 (twenty years ago)

I really like trentemoller's productions. I am talking about the remix for Royksopp ...

ifeelspace, Wednesday, 26 October 2005 09:22 (twenty years ago)

Yeah but I think this remix is really not so removed in style from his other productions, be they his own tracks or remixes. Isn't it the goth/Bjorkish/pop trappings of the thing that's turning you off, not the production itself? I can't see how it differs to much from Polar Shift sonically.

But yeah, this probably belongs on the charts not the dancefloor, unless you are crafty like stirmonster and edit out the poppy bits of course.

I myself am not much a fan of this genre.

Good Dog (Good Dog), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 10:41 (twenty years ago)

Think of Jesse Somfay latest 12" (Fragile Addiction). It is dark (call it goth if you like) and still sounds like nothing else. Sounds really 2005.

"For One Brief Moment..." is a great track

Dominique (dleone), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 11:08 (twenty years ago)

Is that the one with the horribly irritating wobbly acid?

JoB (JoB), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 11:41 (twenty years ago)

no that's Fragile Addiction

Dominique (dleone), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 11:42 (twenty years ago)

"horribly irritating wobbly acid?" .. wow, the track is even better than I thought ...

ifeelspace, Wednesday, 26 October 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

"horribly irritating wobbly acid?"
This is exactly what my mother used to say when I played Velvet Underground's "White Light, White Heat" ;-)

nocure, Wednesday, 26 October 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

But yeah, this probably belongs on the charts not the dancefloor, unless you are crafty like stirmonster and edit out the poppy bits of course.

I dun get this.

deej.. (deej..), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

"What do you think would be more innovative, ifeelspace?"
The DJ T mix of Will Saul's Animal Magic ... for example.

ifeelspace, Wednesday, 26 October 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

deej i just mean that it's a dance song made from a pop song, verse, chorus, middle eight and it's not very tracky.

Good Dog (Good Dog), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

I like both the tracks Ifeelspace cites, but also this track!

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

The Vitalic remix is ace as well.

This is turning out to be like the year's best single. I'll definitely pick up the 12'' next week.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 02:51 (twenty years ago)

strange we don't have a dedicated trentemoller thread

anyway I'm listening to 'the forest' right now and sounds like some perfect mid-point between schneiderTM's "the light 2000", auch's "remix tomorrow goodbye (farben rmx)" and some fanfare from heaven's lobby in hell

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 12 November 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

oh but now it's gone into some weird breakdown and all those references become hopelessly off

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 12 November 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

the FLASHLIGHTS. and the EXPLOSIONS.

holy fuck.

vitalic remix as well?!?!

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 25 November 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

why can't i find this on SLSK? I WANT THE COOL THING THE KIDS LIKE YEAH THAT'S IT

yuengling participle (rotten03), Friday, 25 November 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

vitalic remix is good too.

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 25 November 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

I was thinking a while back that Andre Kraml's "Safari" had this secret property which brought the best out in its remixers, maybe this track has it too.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 26 November 2005 13:00 (twenty years ago)

i don't know about the jlc remix though; i like it enough, but it feels slightly (whisper it) jlc-rmx-by-numbers.

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 26 November 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

Yeah the JLC radio mix is a bit blah, but his Thin White Duke Mix is utterly fantastic and easily the best of the bunch.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Saturday, 26 November 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

Lex, as Brainwasher notes, please ensure you're listening to the TWD mix and not the JLC mix!!!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 27 November 2005 12:01 (twenty years ago)

agh i have no idea which i am listening to! it was posted in some other thread as a ysi. i think it's over 6 minutes. anyone care to gmail the right one?

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 27 November 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

where is the TWD mix from?

cutty (mcutt), Sunday, 27 November 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

TWD Mix = Thin White Duke. Not sure where from as I downloaded it but from Ronan's comments it appears to be on same vinyl release as the Trentemoller mix.

Lex the JLC remix is a bit like his production work for Madonna, it's been designed for radio, kinda moody and trancey if I recall.

The Thin White Duke mix meanwhile is halcyonic psychedelic filter-disco, like Linus Loves' "The Terrace" or Space Cowboy's "I Would Die 4 U", but with a strong dose of The Chemical Brothers circa their third or fourth album e.g. the second half of "The State We're In".

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 28 November 2005 04:01 (twenty years ago)

Yeah had trouble deciding which version of this to vote for on the singles list for stylus, went with Thin White Duke.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 28 November 2005 04:12 (twenty years ago)

can someone ysi the TWD mix?

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 28 November 2005 04:15 (twenty years ago)

deej, i emailed someone to ask about the remix policy for the stylus list and apparently EVERYTHING WHICH IS NOT AN A-SIDE IS DISQUALIFIED (remixes are apparently 'not proper singles' oh fuck off and get one clue about how people consume music in 2005). completely fucking ludicrous. the trentemoller remix was in my top 10 easy before i had to redo it :(

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 28 November 2005 11:55 (twenty years ago)

i dunno what you guys are on about
there is nothing special or interesting about this remix, the vitalic one is good, nothing beats the album version though.

Idle Idle (idleidleidle), Monday, 28 November 2005 12:08 (twenty years ago)

three months pass...
trentemoller LIVE in melbourne next friday!!!

so er what's his live show like then?

electrogrouse (haitch), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 10:58 (twenty years ago)

http://www.inthemix.com.au/images/whatson/27966.jpg

does he REALLY gain all his powers by feasting on unsuspecting microkorgs?
