scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

Generalizations kill masturbating kittens.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

i confess i don't know what a wiiija is.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

OPZ

(But you said "current manifestations," Scott! Otherwise I'd be predictable and say 4AD.)

Andy_K (Andy_K), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

Wiija: Cornershop, Brassy... Therapy.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

i was just wondering if anyone thought any of them where any good anymore. i only know one or two artists on each label.except for wiiija and too pure. i have no idea what is on those labels. i haven't bought a too pure album since the last faith healers album.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

wasn't it at one time called Neo Wiija, or is that somethign totally diff?

i'll go with Matador for their current stock

ken taylrr never her (ken taylrr), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

actually, i have no idea what mowax puts out now either.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

mowax doesn't really release much these days, if at all.

too pure has a lot of new signings, including the rogers sisters, young people, and old pals stereolab. come to think of it, 4ad and beggars have a lot of new acts these days, too. while obv. biased, recent stuff on these labels that i like include celebration, the double, early man (yes, i do like them and no, i don't think it's strange they're on matador - remember unsane?). also ilx fave and former poster j0hn d@rn!3ll3 is on 4ad, so be nice.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

4AD will always be cool with me. I would love to be on 4AD.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

who are the rogers sisters & the young people? are they shoegeezers?

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

i don't think it's strange that early man is on matador. they are hipster metal, just like unsane was. (I loved unsane)

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

UNSANE JUST PUT OUT A NEW ALBUM BLURRRUGGHHHH!

*cuts up lips, jumps out window, plays in traffic*

Andy_K (Andy_K), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

they were on relapse for a while. are they still on relapse? i didn't think they were.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

They be.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

those jackass kids get younger and younger. it's irresponsible, i tellya.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 19:32 (twenty years ago)

After Hermana, who handle Drag City and Domino, Beggars are my favourite PR company. I always light up when I receive a parcel from them.
Great albums on BG this year from Devendra Banhart, MIA, Electralane, Rogers Sisters, White Stripes, not to mention the Stereolab reissues/remixes.

Stew (stew s), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

I like Too Pure.

owen moorhead (i heart daniel miller), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

4AD for me. Blonde Redhead and (eventually) Scott Walker!

i know one artist who has always dreamt of becoming a 4ad artist. his dreams are now reality. how long should i leave it before i start asking him q's as to whether the reality is as good as the dream then ?

mo'wax aint anything for beggars at the moment. last mowax release was unkle and that was released via island then g-u, (and then probably nike next)

i know one artist who has always dreamt of becoming a 4ad artist. his dreams are now reality. how long should i leave it before i start asking him q's as to whether the reality is as good as the dream then ?

totally depends who he is and what his current status is. the problem with 4AD is that many artists get misty-eyed about it's kudos which sometimes blinds them to the harsh business realities of entering into a partnership.

if your friend is a new signing, get him to do a headcount on the number of staffers in beggars london press office. got it? good. now, count up the number of labels that are promoting new material via that central hub press office. for extra fun, then count up the number of active artists on each of those labels - misleading i know b/c not all of them are releasing at the same time, but it gives you an idea of what i'm talking about.

it's not the staffer's fault. they're good people with a stupid workload. it's not really beggar's fault either, they've had to rationalise and centralise everything to stay afloat.

is it a 'dream' situation? ummmmm. no. unless you're jack white it's actually a pretty hideous bottleneck.

nope, Wednesday, 26 October 2005 13:14 (twenty years ago)

C'mon, Nope...that's the case everywhere these days, in case you haven't noticed. Beggars is, in my experience, no better or no worse than most all of the majors in terms of how many bands get moved through their press office. Ever counted up how many artists a typical major has, counting subsiderary labels?

Find me the "dream situation" and I'll buy you a boat. It's the same as it ever was; prioritization is in effect, some artists get it and some don't. It's a drag but that's the music industry for you.

I can tell you point blank there are many, many folks other than Jack White who are done right by Beggars' press people. I'm speaking from personal experience.

Gary Numan, Wednesday, 26 October 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

"unless you're jack white it's actually a pretty hideous bottleneck."

Er...yeah...right, 'Nope'.....because Devendra, MIA, Blonde Redhead, TVOTR, the National, Interpol and Basement Jaxx really suffered from a lack of exposure didn't they?

In fact looking at rosters across the industry it becomes clear that prioritization at BG is a lot less ruthless than anywhere else-unless you'd care to cite an example? No? Thought you might not.

And anyway, are they really staying afloat? Nuymber One albums, multi platinum sales, phenomenal back catalogue? Bet a lotta labels wish they were "clinging on" in that style.

Pyjamas, Wednesday, 26 October 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

Gary OTM, it is the same story all over. for beggars you could substitute rough trade or anyone. majors are worse i agree.

these sorts of observations always come out wrong from someone who's been on the receiving end of it. i mean, how could anyone not take it personally? i was trying to honestly address a question from the perspective of rosy spec'd musos who 'dream' of being on this or that label.

but thankyou for your thoughts on prioritization, Gary. you obviously know your onions and i don't dispute anything that you're saying, i also appreciate the humanity of your tone.

nope, Wednesday, 26 October 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

everyone I know who has been on 4AD had a lame experience, but I don't think they'd give it up, in retrospect, I'm sure it's helped them in the long run more than it hurt them. It just maybe didn't help them as much immediately as you'd expect.
