Contributors will be loved if they can post direct links to their choices (from MTV's site or wherever).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 02:36 (twenty years ago)

There's a Rammstein video that I think is called "Keine Lust," in which everyone in the band except for one member is rocking out while wearing convincing fat-suits.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 02:37 (twenty years ago)

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 03:16 (twenty years ago)

woops, the link I provided only offers the "original version" of "Mr. Brightside". Yahoo has Sophie Muller's. Admitting this was released in the tail end of 2004, that year, what with "She Will Be Loved" and "White Houses," was sure as fuck hers.

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 03:16 (twenty years ago)

the Thalia video that's on MTV Espanol every other hour. phwoar.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 04:01 (twenty years ago)

reo, Wednesday, 26 October 2005 06:06 (twenty years ago)

I'm actually not a huge fan of the white stripes but Blue Orchid and My Doorbell are my pics for this year.

Bombed Out and Depleted / Kate (papa november), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 06:07 (twenty years ago)

You like D&D, Audrey Hepburn, Fangoria, Harry Houdini and croquet. You can't swim, you can't dance, and you don't know karate. Face it, you're never gonna make it.

I don't wanna make it. I just wanna--

sugababes "push the button".
christa cambell from 50cent featuring olivia "candy shop " video is in david banner "play".

retroboy, Wednesday, 26 October 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

I'm not getting all the love for "do you want to?". The first time I saw it I thought it was a terrible video, and I haven't changed my mind yet. I suppose someone's got to say it, and I hate to agree with Q magazine, but "Dare" by Gorrillaz.

"doctor whatever it is" by Mylo, maybe.

But I haven't seen many.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 12:37 (twenty years ago)

'robot rock'
'do you want to'

erm... it's not a vintage year. 'do you want to' is endearingly crap. 'cool' is okay.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 12:39 (twenty years ago)

Multilingual contribution:

All three Wir Sind Helden videos (that's the top three links on that page). My favourite is the Dylan tribute-with-a-clever-twist "Nur ein Wort", but you need to speak German to appreciate that I think.

La Casa Azul - "El sol no brillará nunca más" (which you don't have to speak Spanish for to appreciate)

Oh, and Bikstok Røgsystem - "Cigar" seconded.

vinegar (Koens), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

Audioslave - Doesn't Remind Me
Toby Keith - As Good As I Once Was

Josh Love (screamapillar), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 13:53 (twenty years ago)

get yr arses over to http://videos.antville.org/ and check the ridiculous amount of videos they've got listed.

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

R. Kelly's long-form "Trapped In The Closet" video, and Franz Ferdinand "Do You Want To" are the best things I've seen all year.

c7n (Cozen), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

I kinda like the "My Doorbell" video. Disturbing, though.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

Seems pretty simple:

'Feel Good Inc.'
'Dare'
'Dirty Harry'

BARMS, Wednesday, 26 October 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

MCR pretty well have this year on lock, yeah.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

knife (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

I really like the newest Beck video, although I don't remember the name. The shapes of the people in the video are made up of typed letters.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

This here Backstreet Boys video kills me everytime.

JoB (JoB), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

For me, I'd say Teen Angst by M83 by faaaaaar. And I honestly haven't really seen many videos that have come out this year. I'm already expecting some sort of "it really shows" type of response or something.

Tokyo Ghost Stories (Tokyo Ghost Stories), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 23:47 (twenty years ago)

Kanye West - Gold Digger

Laszlo Kovacs (Laszlo Kovacs), Thursday, 27 October 2005 06:47 (twenty years ago)

'All About Us', now with extra face-shooting.

Flyboy (Flyboy), Thursday, 27 October 2005 07:47 (twenty years ago)

it's really annoying what a shitty year it's been for videos actually. for the first time since i was about 6, i don't really even have an answer to this question.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Thursday, 27 October 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

I’ll second the Audioslave and Backstreet Boys videos, and the first “Trapped In The Closet” installment. How quickly we forget!

glenny g2003 (glenny g2003), Friday, 28 October 2005 01:47 (twenty years ago)

re: Wir Sind Helden's "Nur Ein Wort", yeah I love that video and that song even though I don't speak a word of German and have absolutely no idea what it's about.

I just saw Royksopp's "What Else Is There?" video, and it captures the mood of the song really well, I think. Reminds me of some of Jonathan Glazer's stuff. Still... not really groundbreaking.

Other than that, it really has been a shit year for videos - the only one that comes close to being great for me is still "Helena" and I believe that was 2004.

Roz (Roz), Friday, 28 October 2005 14:22 (twenty years ago)

forgot: Royksopp: "What Else Is There?"

Roz (Roz), Friday, 28 October 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

PDF said this on the Latin Grammys thread and surely this must be a contender:

Best video should go to this Jabba-the-Hut-like reggaeton guy named, I think, Bimbo, who's got a song about filling up your gas tank - it's got ass-shaking babes in Bush, Hussein and Bin Laden masks. It's brilliant. They play it on my local Latin video channel (mun2, pronounced "mundos") all the time.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 4 November 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

re Royksopp video, i was a bit disappointed the Knife lady wasn't hotter. she looks as weird as she sounds!

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 4 November 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

Actually, I don't think that's the Knife chick, but some model. The girl from the Knife is apparently really shy or something.

Anyway, I changed my mind - the new version of Feist's "Mushaboom" video is my favourite this year. Featuring flying girls, toast and anthropomorphic plants.

Roz (Roz), Friday, 4 November 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

now you mention it she did look different to the girl singing in the Knife's 'You Take My Breath Away' video - so now I don't know what to think.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 4 November 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

the knife singer was not available for the entire shoot due to scheduling conflicts, she appears briefly in the video though.

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 4 November 2005 17:06 (twenty years ago)

for the first minute or so that royksopp is ok. the director, martin de thurah seems like he's kinda going for an amalgamation of glazer, cunningham, gondry, and bizarrely, sameul bayer, in that video and his others. i'm not sure i understand his fixation with some ambiguous flesh colored liquid, as it featured prominently in his video for carpark north too. speaking of that video, it's the one the people at antville are gushing over, and i couldn't see anythign special about it all.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 4 November 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

ok, the feist video is good enough for the whole year : D

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 4 November 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

the royksopp and carpark north clips are faaaaaaaaaaar superior to the feist.

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 4 November 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

how come? out of curiosity.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 4 November 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

Gondry to the rescue: The White Stripes - "The Denial Twist" (quicktime). Contains Conan O' Brien.

Roz (Roz), Friday, 11 November 2005 09:30 (twenty years ago)

i forgot to mention Charlotte Hatherley's 'Bastardo' - conceptually and technically v impressive and absolutely perfect for the song.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 11 November 2005 10:12 (twenty years ago)

Yeah the new Gondry is fucking awesome.

sean gramophone (Sean M), Friday, 11 November 2005 11:11 (twenty years ago)

betchadupa - My Army of Birds and Gulls

retrogurl, Friday, 11 November 2005 11:29 (twenty years ago)

This "GAYFAG" from Stylus (what the hell was that?) votes for another Sophie Muller vid, the Faith Hill/Tim McGraw clip for "Like We Never Loved At All" - a classically glam over-the-top retro-country masterpiece if ever there was. It's not the greatest clip artistically speaking, no, but emotionally it's a gutpunch of a viewing experience. My #2 would be a different Killers video, "All These Things That I've Done," the trailer-park spaghetti western that Anton Corbjin's always wanted to make.

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Saturday, 12 November 2005 02:04 (twenty years ago)

!!! I would have seen this video by now if I'd known she had directed it.

'Twan (miccio), Saturday, 12 November 2005 02:13 (twenty years ago)

the white stripes video is pretty damn schweet

Christopher Costello (CGC), Saturday, 12 November 2005 02:20 (twenty years ago)

The video for the Mountain Goats' "This Year" is enjoyable

one month passes...
http://docopenhagen.blogspot.com/2005/12/top-50-music-videos-of-2005.html

It's so obvious I didn't even realize - but then again it's not all that obvious because it's for a song that was released years ago, but video of the year is absolutely "Rubber Johnny."

billstevejim (billstevejim), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 04:19 (twenty years ago)

All I wanna know is who that girl in the m83 video is because I think I am in love with her.

Stephen C (ihope), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 04:53 (twenty years ago)

My #2 would be a different Killers video, "All These Things That I've Done," the trailer-park spaghetti western that Anton Corbjin's always wanted to make.

Actually, after watching his DVD, it seems that half of his videos have spagetti-western elements to it.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Friday, 6 January 2006 02:18 (twenty years ago)

I love the video for Beck's "Girl." Song totally sucks, though.

ng-unit, Friday, 6 January 2006 03:11 (twenty years ago)
