These Beatles album comparison threads...

Nobody ever mentions the first album, most probably because of its coy Merseybeat status. However, I reckon it contains examples of their best songwriting: Theres A Place has remarkably reflective lyrics for pop of that era, and a great tune, PS I Love You, despite being painfully twee has a great chord structure, Ask Me Why has a killer tune and the title track, Please Please Me is, for me, one of the most exciting 3 minutes in pop.

It's a pity the follow up was relatively disappointing.

The first album is not at all bad, but any test like that will automatically mean that the cover versions lose. And there are way too many cover versions on the first two + "Beatles For Sale"

Ah but on that first album they pwned "Twist And Shout."

"Twist And Shout" = not white melodic enough

Oops, my strikethrough tag on "white" didn't work

Agreed re Beatles For Sale, but alongside the bad covers you get classics: I'm a Loser, No Reply etc. Also, I think it's fair to say that until Hard Day's Night, no pop group had ever released a 100% self- penned album.

Also Marcello, I don't know how, but I completely forgot about Twist & Shout!
