My girlfriend's sister is off travelling for 4 months in India and we've bought her an iPod so she has something to listen to. I'm going to fill it up with tunes, but I thought it would be neat if she had some moden indian music to listen to so i've stuck "Prophesy" by Nitin Sawhney and "Ok" by Talvin Singh on there, but thats were my knowledge of contemporary indian music ends.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Debashish Bhattacharya - Calcutta Slide Guitar 3 is fantastic.

Karsh Kale is good, but he's mostly NY-based
Susheela Raman is awesome (but very scandalous because she uses classical music/texts and sexes them up)
Anoushka Shankar's new album is one of my favorites of the year, much more like pop than raga
Zakir Hussain
all manner of bhangra

also don't be a snob about film music, especially if it is by the genius A.R. Rahman (Kisna theme, Bose the Forgotten Hero, Lagaan, etc.)

This might be a good place to ask: Was there any sort of psych scene in India in the '60s and '70s? Hearing some random Peruvian band using a sitar made me wonder...
