sorry, i totally didn't mean to make those all so large. oops

The Kaiser Chiefs' cover reminds me most overtly of the Scritti Politti singles releases circa "Songs To Remember," each of which reworked recognizable packaging of a luxury consumer good (something like an upscale brand of chocolate, cigs and cognac) into the covers.

The Franz Ferdinand one is a direct cop of something from the 20s or 30s, I just can't place it - but probably a German dada or post-dada collage. There may be a connection between some packaging of a record by the Ex, but I can't recall which one.

Kaiser Chiefs reminds me of a combination of these two:

The Depeche Mode cover reminds me of some of Massive Attack's old iconography.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

how do you put the covers in an answer?

AET, Wednesday, 26 October 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

ianinportland, you are a savior! any idea of what that original is called? or at least where you found it? thank you!!

ken taylrr never her (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

There's a Richard Pryor comp. on Rhino that uses that same Rodchenko iconography as well.

hector savage, Wednesday, 26 October 2005 22:51 (twenty years ago)

The LCD Soundsystem cover is taken directly from a disco ball box. I saw one on ebay once and posted the picture to the LCD Soundsystem thread but the image is long gone.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 22:57 (twenty years ago)

The Franz original is part of the Russian Constructionist movement, isn't it?

the similarity between the Hot Hot Heat cover and the N'SYNC "No Strings Attached" album is pretty unfortunate. I'd post it, but I'm on a goddamn Mac right now and feel like i'm in that room from the end of 2001.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Thursday, 27 October 2005 01:00 (twenty years ago)

There must be like 500 albums that look like that Silkk one.

I could swear there's something that looks like the Black Eyed Peas one too but can't think of it.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 27 October 2005 01:03 (twenty years ago)

The first thing I thought of w/the Kaiser Chiefs one was this:

John Justen (johnjusten), Thursday, 27 October 2005 01:13 (twenty years ago)

The original for the Franz Ferdinand is a photomontage by Alexander Rodchenko. I believe it is from 1925. It is an advertisement for Leningrad State Publishing House. (Lengiz). The image coming out of her mouth says "Books", next to it "from all fields of knowledge". The woman pictured is Lily Brik, artist/filmmaker/muse of the Futurist poet Mayakovsky.

eek, Thursday, 27 October 2005 04:21 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, I thought it looked familiar. My friend has a poster of this on his door (I'd really love to know what it's supposed to mean, because I'm baffled):

http://www.grijzemassa.nl/images/rodchenko.jpg

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 27 October 2005 04:24 (twenty years ago)

That one is fucking insane. Image Rodchenko, text Mayakovsky. "There are and never have been better pacifiers than these; you'll be sucking on them till your old age. Sold everywhere [then the name of the manufacturer, Rezinotrest]." In Russian it rhymes (if this rendering is readable): "Loochshih sosok nyebihlah ee nyet; gotof sosat da staryh lyet."

eek, Thursday, 27 October 2005 04:31 (twenty years ago)

Wow, not sure I get it. Is it really an advertisement or does it have some kind of political subtext? Are those bullets? Chess pawns?

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 27 October 2005 04:38 (twenty years ago)

It's really an advertisement. Rodchenko and Mayakovsky did a lot of advertising work in the early- to mid-1920s for state-run enterprises (this was during a brief early period when the state was competing with private companies). Subtexts here are probably more perversely sexual than political.

eek, Thursday, 27 October 2005 04:48 (twenty years ago)

well the antony and the johnsons' cover is from an andy warhol film.
the music video is from that same film...the woman is a new york socialite and friend of warhol who's dying of cancer.

and the 'made man' cover...that design style is typical of those kinds of records. : P

Not quite, but that's the cover that first struck me (that and Stay Sick by the Cramps). Must be the red hair.

the cold play holds a resemblence to the cover of the first de stijl magazine from 1917. i forget who made the woodcut. i don't know if coldplay is intentially making that reference (i don't give them that much credit).

all of franz ferdinand's stuff is lifted from russian constructivist stuff. i think some of their others have direct copies of lissitzky for example.

i think the ashlee simpson cover is lifted from a paul mccarthy piece called "ashley simpson markets here poor-attempt at pop songs with her chest"

Dan Gr (certain), Friday, 28 October 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

Indeed. A more fitting title might've been I Am Boobs.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 28 October 2005 15:46 (twenty years ago)

i think i would like her more if she had titled it I Am Boobs.
