2. Pimpf
3. In Your Room
4. When The Body Speaks
5. To Have And To Hold
6. Behind The Wheel
7. Never Let Me Down Again
8. Flexible
9. Big Muff
10.The Meaning Of Love

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

How can you not like "Never Let Me Down Again"?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

How can you not like "Never Let Me Down Again"?

Just two notes in the melody becomes a bit boring in the long term.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

You're fired.

Dan's answer will be easy -- he'll just post the track listing to Speak and Spell

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 20:43 (twenty years ago)

how can you not like 'big muff' ?, innuendo aside.

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

8. Flexible

nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 26 October 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

Geir, your list is mentalism.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

Although you may have a point with "To Have and To Hold".

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

You're fired too.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

Breathe
Sister of Night
New Dress
Nodisco

and, uh, I don't know, half of "A Broken Frame" or something

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

I'm trying to wrap my head around the suggestion that Geir thinks all of DM's post-Violator work is better than "The Meaning of Love."

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 26 October 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

(or at least the ones from that period that aren't also on his list)

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 26 October 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

Dan's been saying that for years, Curtis! And personally I'd agree with him in that while I enjoy "The Meaning of Love" I love said post-Violator work many times more.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

Every day in every way, I feel more like the Dan Parr-ay.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 26 October 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

The single mix of In Your Room ROCKS!

musicjohn73 (musicjohn73), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 22:13 (twenty years ago)

This thread made me download "Flexible." Thanks, Geir!

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 26 October 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

"Shame" does not belong on these lists AT ALL; it is very possibly one of the ten greatest songs they ever released.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 22:58 (twenty years ago)

Apart from "Pipeline", everything on that same album as "Shame" is among the 20-30 greatest songs they ever released.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 27 October 2005 00:50 (twenty years ago)

wow, geir's list IS mentalism.

Kim (Kim), Thursday, 27 October 2005 01:14 (twenty years ago)

1. Pimpf
2. Get Right With Me
3. Barrel of a Gun
4. Never Let Me Down Again (yes, I agree with Geir)
5. One Caress
6. The Meaning of Love
7. Love in Itself
8. It's No Good
9. World Full of Nothing
10.Agent Orange

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 27 October 2005 01:45 (twenty years ago)

Between Alfred and Geir's lists, you could construct all but like 2 or 3 of my Depeche Mode POX.

You sure got the "Pimpf" part right, though.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 27 October 2005 02:11 (twenty years ago)

"The Meaning Of Love", "It's Called A Heart" and "See You" are their worst singles by leaps and bounds. "Flexible" is mad catchy but also mad stupid and irritating. "It Doesn't Matter Two" is perhaps one of the most useless songs ever recorded. Individual tracks on Speak And Spell and A Broken Frame are great but either of those albums in their entirety is like Kryptonite.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Thursday, 27 October 2005 03:51 (twenty years ago)

It's Called A Heart
Flexible
New Dress
Dangerous
Pimpf
Pipeline
Agent Orange
Rush
I Feel Love
Freelove

Shooz (shooz), Thursday, 27 October 2005 11:27 (twenty years ago)

Why so much playa hatin on Pimpf, mofos? That track gots a tight groove goin on.

DJ DM (mattsoncarlhew), Thursday, 27 October 2005 13:31 (twenty years ago)

yeah i think PIMPF is worth it just for the long-walk-to-the-stage intro bit in 101. the anti-IT'S CALLED A HEART feeling is crzy. i love it, perhaps because it bridges the SINGLES 81-85 era so neatly with the BC/ MASSES/101 era. also '...WINDSCREEN' is on it's bside which was a cool way of saying 'and THIS is where we're headed'. not that that has any bearing on the song on the flip of course. i'd forgotten about 'GET RIGHT WITH ME' god that stinks worse than MY JOY.

there's an *insane* person (with the largest collection of any one band i've ever seen) on slsk sharing DM gigs from the pre 81 era, when they were still composition of sound among other treats.

who knew they ended each night on the BLACK CELEBRATION tour with MORE THAN A PARTY?!

piscesboy, Thursday, 27 October 2005 13:53 (twenty years ago)

'My Joy' sounds like it should have been written by a contestent on Rockstar INXS (speaking only of the title, not having heard the song).

Peter Baumann, Thursday, 27 October 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

"The Meaning Of Love", "It's Called A Heart" and "See You" are their worst singles by leaps and bounds.

I just died a million deaths with each successive word of this sentence.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Thursday, 27 October 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

I'd have to agree in terms of 'least favorite,' say. Something like "Shake the Disease" rips "It's Called a Heart" to shreds so much that it's surprising to realize they were back to back singles.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 27 October 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm. Replace "The Meaning Of Love" with "Pleasure Little Treasure". I forgot about that one, and it does definitely belong in the list. As a matter of fact, there was nothing worth paying attention to on the "Never Let Me Down Again" single at all.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 27 October 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

"See You" is excellent IMO. "The Meaning Of Love", however is sort of a transitional single that sees them drying out of ideas before the somewhat "darker" (and really excellent) "Leave In Silence" single.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 27 October 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

I like "It's Called A Heart," even though melodically or vocally it's not very interesting. Guess I'm a sucker for bass synths.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 27 October 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

I am a sucker for bass synths only when they sound like synths, not when they sound like bass, like on that single.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 27 October 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

"This Is The House" is probably my least favorite DM track. That's all I can contribute right now.

OK, OK, "New Dress" is also kinda weak. Never liked "Barrel Of A Gun" much. "Judas" is a noble failure... okay, now I'm done.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Thursday, 27 October 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

i absolutely loathe "it's called a heart".

but "see you" and "the meaning of love" are synthpop at its best.

x-post: my 15-year-old self is screaming that you dare diss "new dress".

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 27 October 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

how could anyone not like "Barrel of a Gun"??

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 27 October 2005 22:46 (twenty years ago)

I can only do 5:

Playing the Angel
Exciter
Ultra
Songs of Faith and Devotion
101

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 27 October 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

how could anyone not like "Barrel of a Gun"??

What's up, Andrew?

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 27 October 2005 22:57 (twenty years ago)

seriously though Alfred justify your existence.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 27 October 2005 23:01 (twenty years ago)

I hate gun metaphors -- unless John Cale uses them.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 27 October 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

pimp! ho! pimp! ho! pimp! ho! pimp! ho! pimp! ho! pimp! ho! pimp! ho! pimp! ho! pimp! ho! pimp! ho! pimp! ho! pimp! ho! pimp! ho! pimp! ho! pimp! ho!

älänbänänä (alanbanana), Thursday, 27 October 2005 23:20 (twenty years ago)

do you also hate alt-goth-industrial helicopter noises and swooping Gary Numan synths?

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 27 October 2005 23:22 (twenty years ago)

Not to mention the part after the first chorus when the beat just CRASHES in.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 27 October 2005 23:27 (twenty years ago)

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 27 October 2005 23:31 (twenty years ago)

I love "This Is The House". It is sort of a stylistic nod to the Vince Clarke era, only updated with the desperation and agony of 1986-DM.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 27 October 2005 23:34 (twenty years ago)

Lousy

39. Little 15

?!

:)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 28 October 2005 09:16 (twenty years ago)

"Condemnation" is deeply, deeply underrated.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 October 2005 09:33 (twenty years ago)

"Condemnation" is not a Depeche Mode song, it is a gospel ballad, and should never have been done by Depeche Mode.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 28 October 2005 09:50 (twenty years ago)

??

Baaderonixx says DANCE!! TAKE A CHANCE!!! (baaderonixx), Friday, 28 October 2005 12:15 (twenty years ago)

Don't you understand? Depeche Mode are synth-pop! Genre boundaries should not be crossed!

When Jo Wiley first played Barrel of a Gun on Radio 1 many years ago, she virtually ripped it off the turntable, exclaiming "WTF?! Is this some kind of piss-take?" (I paraphrase.)

ledge (ledge), Friday, 28 October 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

Poor her.

I note Geir's comments and yawn.

"Condemnation" is brilliant and to heck with doubters.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 October 2005 13:23 (twenty years ago)

depeche mode baffles me.

petesmith (plsmith), Friday, 28 October 2005 13:24 (twenty years ago)

'Condemnation' leaves me bored.
'Freelove and 'I Feel Loved' are pretty corny too.

Baaderonixx says DANCE!! TAKE A CHANCE!!! are you ready for... TRUE ROMANCE (baa, Friday, 28 October 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

depeche mode baffles me.

Which is why you love them.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 October 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

"Freelove" and "I Feel Loved" are awesome!!!!

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 October 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

What he said.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 October 2005 14:09 (twenty years ago)

I'm not falling for it, Mr Perry, cuz...

i wouldnt waste my time arguing with the ghost of black elegance or whatever charecter
he will waste ur time debating with u with his single dimensional knowledge he acquired in his past and has no tact or understanding the ABC'S of debating

Baaderonixx says DANCE!! TAKE A CHANCE!!! are you ready for... TRUE ROMANCE (baa, Friday, 28 October 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

Hahahahahahahahah OMG

The Ghost of PWNED For Life (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 October 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

"Freelove" and "I Feel Loved" are the two highlights of one of their most underrated albums. Certainly great songs.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 28 October 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

I prefer "I Feel Loved" in remixed form.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Friday, 28 October 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

My girlfriend borrowed my People Are People cassette tape that I had in my car.

Tonight she called me and asked if the tape was still in my car. I searched high and low to no avail.

"Oh wait. Oh no. I think I left it on top of your car."

I KNEW I heard something funny while driving home.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 5 November 2005 03:28 (twenty years ago)

The single mix of In Your Room ROCKS!

Sure, I agree. And that is why it SUCKS!

idk why I posted that on this thread.

Ha! Fabulous!

Male Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Nutsack (Abbbottt), Saturday, 25 February 2012 15:32 (fourteen years ago)

and idk why I clicked on this thread given that I don't particularly like (or dislike) Depeche Mode, but that is p. great

I spent a lot of time listening to mp3s/youtubes of early 80s electronic bands who only recorded like one EP each, and I wonder to myself what happened to them, what would they have turned into, etc... and now apparently the answer is "a band you've been aware of and not really cared about for most of your life"

(dear people posting after me, please post about the demo, and not just to tell me I'm wrong)

Schleimpilz im Labyrinth (a passing spacecadet), Saturday, 25 February 2012 15:46 (fourteen years ago)

I love the way David Gahan looks about 12 in all of those early pictures of Depeche/Composition Of Sound.

Turrican, Saturday, 25 February 2012 17:23 (fourteen years ago)

I don't think Dave Gahan is actually on that track - p sure it's Vince on vocals

Big Mr. Guess U.S.A. Champion (crüt), Saturday, 25 February 2012 17:54 (fourteen years ago)

This thread by turns angers and saddens me.

Tim F, Saturday, 25 February 2012 21:12 (fourteen years ago)

p sure it's Vince on vocals

It sounds like Gahan to me - the production has rolled off the low end of his voice, but his diction is the giveaway.
Interesting to note that the track includes a bass guitar part, which I think makes it unique in the Mode canon. It was presumably performed by Fletch, which would also make it unique, ha ha.

Vast Halo, Saturday, 25 February 2012 21:38 (fourteen years ago)

Hehehehehe... I was thinking pretty much the same thing myself regarding the bass part ;)
