Doing a personal Top 10 for the year, Classic or Dud?

Personally I don't want to take the time and don't see the point but lots of people make up an annual top 10 (or more). Making up your own- Classic or Dud?

Jim Reckling (Jim Reckling), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

Making up someone else's top 10: classic

Andy_K (Andy_K), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

I say classic. Well.. maybe not "classic," but I don't see anything dudworthy about it..

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 21:08 (twenty years ago)

does Andy_K have a current 2005 tracking list? on da web

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

Top 10 = dud. Top 40 = a bit more like it, frankly. Make an effort!

I've been doing them since 1983, and find them useful to look back on.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Thursday, 27 October 2005 08:09 (twenty years ago)

I've done end-of-year top 50 album lists for as long as I can remember (except in 2001 for obvious reasons) and they have been published in a variety of obscure places, including the Uddingston Grammar School magazine (The Villager!), sundry fanzines/Oxford-based journals/NHS in-house magazines (!!), and obviously more recently on my blog(s). I'm undecided about doing one this year - not so much the process of doing one, but where exactly I could put it (no rude suggestions plz).

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 27 October 2005 08:15 (twenty years ago)

Sometimes I'm in the mood, sometimes not. Last year I wasn't, and this year I won't be, though maybe a singles list.

A lot of people on ILM get asked to do them for the Village Voice Pazz & Jopp.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 27 October 2005 08:17 (twenty years ago)

Marcello, create a list using rateyourmusic.com, ala these http://del.icio.us/djmartian/rym2005

one example of a rateyourmusic.com user, that uses the list format to include reviews

Mr Geir Hongro: My Top 40 Albums Of 2005 (So Far...)

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 27 October 2005 10:24 (twenty years ago)

Really I ought to do it on the blog but I don't feel any urgent need to resuscitate Koons and such an exercise would be far too big for NYLPM.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 27 October 2005 10:38 (twenty years ago)

So, rateyourmusic.com is an ideal format for you

check:

Ranked Lists - that is easy to set up
Album front covers - neat presentation
space for reviews/comments/links etc

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 27 October 2005 10:42 (twenty years ago)

dud (also r*ckist) but I do it anyway

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 27 October 2005 10:43 (twenty years ago)

does Andy_K have a current 2005 tracking list? on da web

I suddenly felt fed up and dumped it. Too much stuff to like, not enough stuff to love.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Thursday, 27 October 2005 10:47 (twenty years ago)

I reckon no more than 5 of geir's top 40 list would be in Marcello's Top 50 list

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 27 October 2005 10:56 (twenty years ago)

I find lists that limit themselves to singles (as opposed to including album tracks or whatever) rather odd in this day and age. It doesn't seem to reflect how most of us listen to music. I understand it's a way of making the choices manageable, but still.

brittle-lemon (brittle-lemon), Thursday, 27 October 2005 11:29 (twenty years ago)

depends how you define 'singles' though, innit. it's not hard to work out intuitively what track is 2005 vs 2004 - for instance it would be insane to call 'goodies' a 2005 record even though its uk release was jan 05.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 27 October 2005 11:36 (twenty years ago)

Yeh, I've always made a Top50 'tracks' list more than a 'singles' list.

Anyway, personal list making = classic. I love to read other people's too.

naranjito (Koens), Thursday, 27 October 2005 11:42 (twenty years ago)

I reckon no more than 5 of geir's top 40 list would be in Marcello's Top 50 list

-- DJ Martian (altmartinu...), October 27th, 2005.

Currently seven, but as with everything that's liable to change.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 27 October 2005 12:43 (twenty years ago)

Classic if you enjoy doing it, dud if you don't.

Classic.

For me at least. I compulsively list, rank, organize etc. everything, not just music. It articulates things in a way that is digestible in retrospect, and engages reflection on things you would have let slide into the forgotten depths of the back of your mind.

that being said I spent what is probably an embarrasing amount of time putting together this:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/AbXy6001/2007list.jpg

anyone cares, you can hear it in megamix form here

mehlt, Monday, 24 December 2007 17:47 (eighteen years ago)

Classic? Including links to everything on your list so we can easily check out stuff being mentioned.

Mordechai Shinefield, Monday, 24 December 2007 18:01 (eighteen years ago)

Classic. For me at least Jesus, I happened to make a mix of those tracks, in case anyone was curious as to what they sounded like. If that is really such a faux-pas post of sorts I apologize, I'm really not trying to make myself out to be some sort of list authority for everyone to revere.

If that wasn't in reference to my post(because I'm really not sure), then please disregard what I just wrote.

mehlt, Monday, 24 December 2007 18:09 (eighteen years ago)

No, I meant, it's classic that you included a track mix. It was a compliment.

Mordechai Shinefield, Monday, 24 December 2007 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

Haha. I read "Classic?" as "Classic? Are you serious!" and "Including links to everything on your list so we can easily check out stuff being mentioned." as saying "and in addition you give links to everything!"

Oh my, I must really not be sleeping well. . . My apologies there.

mehlt, Monday, 24 December 2007 18:35 (eighteen years ago)

Defensive mehlt is defensive.

The Reverend, Monday, 24 December 2007 18:50 (eighteen years ago)

You know me too well.
