Help Me with a 10-Year Quest (Indentify Songs...)

About ten years ago I bought a homemade mixtape at a yardsale. It doesn't have any track information, but it is dated 1985. One side is "industrial," I guess, and the other is hardcore and hip-hop. The hardcore/hip-hop side I've mostly managed to identify in the last decade (an amateurish but charming pause button remix of whodini, the entire gang green section of "Boston Not LA," etc). The industrial side, however, is still mostly a mystery. It's bookended by Skinny Puppy songs from Remission, but otherwise I have no idea.

So, I'm turning to the collective wisdom of ILM. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=Q55G6WYW

Megaupload.com looks like a weird scam site, but it's not. Just wait 45 seconds and the download link will appear. The upload speed is way better than You Send It...

I don't know if this is embarassing music -- wait, I know it is. But I've been trying to identify these songs for a DECADE!

I'd love to help but this is the slowest goddamn download evah.

Edward III (edward iii), Thursday, 27 October 2005 04:26 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I gave up around "5% complete"

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 27 October 2005 04:30 (twenty years ago)

Huh...maybe fast upload, slow download. Damn it all. You Send It uploads are incredibly slow for me. This 30 meg file would probably go till morning. Do you all know of any other similar hosting sites?

Chris H. (chrisherbert), Thursday, 27 October 2005 04:38 (twenty years ago)

www.rapidshare.de

Edward III (edward iii), Thursday, 27 October 2005 05:12 (twenty years ago)

Ah well, I bit the bullet and did You Send It. Didn't take that long, actually. I guess cause it's the middle of the night.

Wow, rapid share looks amazing.

Chris H. (chrisherbert), Thursday, 27 October 2005 05:19 (twenty years ago)

Track 9 is the locked groove from SPK's Leichenschrei (an amazing + truly frightening album). The rest is probably best left lost to the sands of time...

Edward III (edward iii), Thursday, 27 October 2005 05:31 (twenty years ago)

Now I'm thinking Track 2 is a Foetus track from some R. Kern film... not 100% sure but it sounds awfully familiar.

Edward III (edward iii), Thursday, 27 October 2005 05:33 (twenty years ago)

Thanks a lot! You don't like track 6? That's my favorite.

Chris H. (chrisherbert), Thursday, 27 October 2005 05:40 (twenty years ago)

Makes me feel like a choirboy being chased down Danceteria hallways... I don't like feeling like that...

Edward III (edward iii), Thursday, 27 October 2005 05:42 (twenty years ago)

track 3 is Art of Noise, "Battle" from the Into Battle EP

eek, Thursday, 27 October 2005 05:43 (twenty years ago)

Track 7 is 'Don't Crash' by Front 242

Ned T.Rifle, Thursday, 27 October 2005 09:27 (twenty years ago)

I really like Track 1. Another Front 242 track? Now you've got me searching for these things! Arrgghhh!
Sounds like a lot of them don't have English as their first language.
I'm enjoying Track 4 as well now.
This thing is growing on me - I can see why you've tried 10 years to track it all down.

Ned T.Rifle, Thursday, 27 October 2005 09:44 (twenty years ago)

Can u upload the skinny puppy tracks too?
The I'll have the whole thing and it can drive me mad for 10 years!

Ned, Thursday, 27 October 2005 09:50 (twenty years ago)

Sure, I'll upload the Skinny Puppy songs later tonight. The other side has a couple of mysteries as well, but I don't have it digitized. That's a project for another day.

Chris H. (chrisherbert), Thursday, 27 October 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

track 8 sounds like chris & cosey?

chr1sb0y (chr1sb0y), Thursday, 27 October 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

I think that I actually found track 4 a few years ago, but have since forgotten what it was. Maybe it was called "Rough Justice?" I don't remember if that was the group or the song. And I may have made all that up completely.

Chris H. (chrisherbert), Thursday, 27 October 2005 20:39 (twenty years ago)

Wow, now I'm really glad I didn't download this.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 27 October 2005 20:42 (twenty years ago)

This tape is awesome. Don't make fun of it just because you're jealous.

Chris H. (chrisherbert), Thursday, 27 October 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

it is awesome!

unconscious, honey (FE7), Thursday, 27 October 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

Track 6 is from 'The Covenant, The Sword and The Arm of The Lord' by Cabaret Voltaire. I think it's the track 'Warm'.

rw, Thursday, 27 October 2005 21:04 (twenty years ago)

i'm downloading this not because i think i'll necessarily be able to help, but because it sounds fucking great :)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 27 October 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

Here it is with the Skinny Puppy songs -

Chris H. (chrisherbert), Thursday, 27 October 2005 22:04 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for that.
Enjoying it in it's full glory right now!
Track 6 - The Cabs! Of course...

Ned, Friday, 28 October 2005 09:25 (twenty years ago)

Track 2 is Red Lorry Yellow Lorry. (don't know the title)

StanM (StanM), Saturday, 29 October 2005 10:59 (twenty years ago)

er... track 2 of the "here it is with the Skinny Puppy songs" version, that is. It's track 1 for everyone who downloaded the first version.

StanM (StanM), Saturday, 29 October 2005 11:01 (twenty years ago)

I just SHAZZAMED the unknown trax and even they (it) do(es)n't know.
Damn. This is starting to bug me (in a good way).

Ned, Saturday, 29 October 2005 11:05 (twenty years ago)

"Rough Justice" is the name of a Portion Control song, and that band would TOTALLY fit on this mix. That's probably what it is.

sleeve (sleeve), Saturday, 29 October 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

track 9 is definitely Chris And Cosey. Don't know which album.
track 7 sounds like Cab Volt also.

oh, and track 3 is Mark Stewart from the "As The Veneer Of Democracy Starts To Fade", this is an untitled track I think. Truly a great album.

sleeve (sleeve), Saturday, 29 October 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

how does one shazzam tracks? is this an online service?

tremendoid (tremendoid), Saturday, 29 October 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

The Red Lorry Yellow Lorry track is "Spinning Round".

Patchouli Clark (noodle vague), Saturday, 29 October 2005 20:43 (twenty years ago)

/me slaps forehead

Of course! Spinning round!

StanM (StanM), Saturday, 29 October 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

Well it only took the board 2 days to solve most of the 10-year-old mysteries that stumped Google. How long ya reckon it would take for ILM to figure out who Jack the Ripper was?

1) Red Lorry Yellow Lorry - "Spinning Round"
2) Mark Stewart - (untitled)
3) Art of Noise - "Battle"
4) Portion Control - "Rough Justice" (?)
5)
6) Cabaret Voltaire - "Warm" (song title?)
7) Front 242 - "Don't Crash"
8) Chris and Cosey - ?
9) SPK - locked groove from Leichenschrei

Edward III (edward iii), Sunday, 30 October 2005 01:31 (twenty years ago)

cutty (mcutt), Sunday, 30 October 2005 01:58 (twenty years ago)

i love this thread.

Particular, Sunday, 30 October 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

Bestest thread of the month.

nathalie, a bum like you (stevie nixed), Sunday, 30 October 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

tremendoid - all details on shazaming are at shazam.com - basically you phone this number, point yr phone at the music and they (it) txts you back with the track - usually. Didn't work with this though!

This is a great thread but I really wish we had track 5 sorted. Euro(?)-electro- indistrial-lite with the dominant lyric "little white lies"? Someone must know!

Ned T.Rifle, Sunday, 30 October 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

That voice... is it Howard Devoto?
