The greatest four-record run in jazz history

I was going to say Ornette's first four Atlantics - Shape Of Jazz To Come, Change Of The Century, This Is Our Music, Free Jazz - though with Ornette! (can't remember offhand whether that came out before or after Free Jazz) you could safely extend that run to five.

With Miles you could probably have a run of two dozen or so.

Anyway, other suggestions etc. etc....

V. corny answer: ignoring live albums, Milestones-Porgy & Bess-Kind of Blue-Sketches of Spain is an unbelievable string of albums.

Even more unbelievable when you append Miles Ahead to the front of that string.

What's on either side of the three Mingus made on Candid?

after looking at amg, I'll say (and I'm skipping "The Town Hall Concert" here, with our live album exemption.)

Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus (Candid)
Oh Yeah (Atlantic)
Reincarnation of a Love Bird (Candid)
The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady (Impulse!)
Mingus mingus mingus mingus (Impulse!)

If I were to do Miles, it would be:

ESP
Miles Smiles
Sorcerer
Nefertiti

or maybe

Relaxin'
Cookin'
Steamin'
Workin'

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 27 October 2005 12:44 (twenty years ago)

or:

On The Corner
Get Up With It
Big Fun
Dark Magus
Agharta
Pangaea

It's a straight six!

Relaxin'
Cookin'
Steamin'
Workin'

otm and all recorded in what, a few hours?

mcd (mcd), Thursday, 27 October 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

All in one three-hour session, IIRC.

I'm not saying that Relaxin' etc is not a great string of albums - but with the Mingus set has a lot more styles, and all of it is great. He even switches from bass to piano for one album.

With jazz it seems like you could easily extend it to 8 album run and still have a lot of contenders, which you can't say for rock.

TRG (TRG), Thursday, 27 October 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

More Miles...

Miles In The Sky
Filles De Kilimanjaro
In A Silent Way
Bitches Brew

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 27 October 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

Herbie Hancock:

Mwandishi
Crossings
Sextant
Head Hunters
