Atonal Disco

I've been asked to DJ "Atonal Disco"... I have a rough idea what to do, although not of it is really "atonal" per se... I'm pretty sure the concept was just presented specifically to fuck with the DJs invited..

..but if you were asked to DJ "atonal disco", what would you bring? (DFA bands would be far too easy.. although in a very rough way, some tracks qualify surely. But I can't imagine a TRULY atonal disco record.. like Schoenberg 4/4 or whatever... hmmmmm, ideas, ideas.)

(This is also one of those "I GOT TWO HOURS OF SLEEP LAST NIGHT, BECAUSE OF PACKING HI DERE :D" threads.. so ignore as you will.)

Are we talking about Disco as disco qua disco or just dancey dance?

PIL's "Death Disco"
Sonic Youth's "Justice Is Might" (I think that's the name of the dancebeat track on Bad Moon Rising)
The Ethel Merman Disco Album Screwed & Chopped

jw, it's up to you at this point. you are hereby crowned the atonal discomaster.

Maybe I'll just bring really obnoxious techno.. which I guess is digitally "atonal" and has a 4/4 beat..

Why not hit the basics? "24→24 Music" by Dinosaur L is pretty damn atonal.
If you want techno, Andy Vaz's Sound-Variation springs to mind instantly: all "wrong" notes and dissonance. The curious thing is how he actually makes hooks out of the dissonance.

DAF are, if not actually atonal, frequently at least a bit off-key.

Take a drum machine, w/fours programmed into it. Play 2 records at once, EG "isn't anything" on one deck, and "e=mc2" on the other, with the fader set in the middle, so you can hear equal amounts of both records. Keep the drum m,/c running though, so ppl can dance. As well as music, take along some test tone and sound effect records. They want "atonal"? See how hardcore these fuckers actually are.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 28 October 2005 10:42 (twenty years ago)

I'd play Scenario Rock 'Skitzo Dancer (Justice Remix )'.

Affectian (Affectian), Friday, 28 October 2005 10:53 (twenty years ago)

I like Pashmina's idea

"The songs sound like atonal disco music made by damaged robots, and that's better than you'd think it would be. I could write more, maybe even throw in some more random life anecdotes for your amusement (including the one where I nearly ran over a snake while driving home one sunny afternoon), but I think I hit this particular nail on the head with "atonal disco music made by damaged robots," so I suggest we take leave of each other's company for now. Adieu. "

this might be better than the stuff on Last Line of the Review
