WTF is YouSendIt's Business Model?

alright, perhaps tangentially related to the music world, but not ILM. Look at all the YSI threads here and the way html based file sending/sharing is changing the way "exclusive" singles are disseminated to the public.

So what is YouSendIt's business model? Bandwith and storage space are dirt cheap these days, but a couple piddling Google ads aren't paying their rent. Any thoughts? Maybe just a push to be #1 so they can get bought out?

It's owned by the RIAA. They're going to collect data and email addresses for two years, and then arrest 35 million people.

to pay for a domain name for 11 years is a very far-sighted move

I think there's some sort of "premium" yousendit service you can buy that allows you to stop a download and resume it later. I guess they make money off of that?

31g (31g), Thursday, 27 October 2005 23:55 (twenty years ago)

They don't run Google ads, they sell their own ads. The ads look expensive and bandwidth and storage are cheap, so they probably make good money on the 8 million unique visitors they say they get every month.

Right now it looks like they auction off ad space, but if you check the job listings, they're hiring an advertising director, so they're probably going to step up the ad sales.

And surprisingly, they also know what the DCMA is.

one year passes...
I just got this e-mail:

Your Lite account is great, but you deserve more. That's why we are giving you a free upgrade to our most powerful service, YouSendIt Business Plus, to experience the many benefits it provides. This is a $29.99 value and you get it absolutely free - no strings attached.

Compared to your current account, some key advantages include the ability to:

Track file downloads
Send multiple files at once
Customize file deliveries with your logo
Password protect your uploaded files
Plus, there are no ads on your pages or your recipient's download pages.

Hurry, this promotion ends soon.

I can't see what the catch is, but I also can't see why they would give me something for free. Should I go for it, or is the 'no strings attached' promise a lie?

OK, ignore this. I've found the catch. Upgrade only valid for 30 days, blah, blah, blah...

Now, the rebranded Hightail does just that, carrying a name "that strides like a giant" and a look "that contrasts the endless dreary blues of the cloud space," Garlinghouse boasted.

"We made people go to so many meetings about this," an inside source added on condition of anonymity. "By the end they were screaming. 'Just call it whatever the fuck you want, you're going to do it anyway.' By the time they got back to their desks there'd be a new Meeting Wizard invite in their inbox. It was awesome."
