TS: Codeine vs. Slint

The fact that I'm asking the question at all is probably a hint that I'm going with Codeine on this one. Both came out around the same time, both were quiet at first and then became apocalyptically loud all of a sudden, both released two albums and an EP and then broke up (not necessarily in that order). For some reason, though, nobody seems to think of them as of a piece. I love Slint, of course, but I love Codeine more, because they had the better singer, better guitar tone (the Big Black-style distortion on Tweez is so fucking obnoxious...), and better songs, as well as a better grasp of dynamics. Which is not to say that Slint wasn't genius. It's just that Codeine was, you know, geniuser.

In sum: "The White Birch" > "Good Morning Captain" > "Frigid Stars" > "Tweez"

Let the contention begin!!!1!!11

"good morning captain" is not an album, though.

I know. It's just really good.

dude, this is wrong. both were great.

Much as I love Slint, Codeine are the clear winners.

codeine were more consistent but good morning captain is still better than anything they ever did

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 28 October 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

good morning captain isn't even the best fucking slint song. stop being emo.

Normally I'd say Codeine b/c Frigid Stars LP is a colossal record and personal fave, but since I saw Slint when they toured recently, I was just blown away by their power and accuracy -- gave the songs on record more weight in retrospect. So today - SLINT.

i'm not emo! i just like that song. eat a cock!

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 28 October 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

I'm not saying it's their best, it was just an example. I meant that some Slint songs are better than pretty much any Codeine song, but Codeine was better all around. And don't call me emo. Also, fuck everyone who saw Slint, as I am massively jealous. The closest they came to me was Chicago. Dicks.

owen moorhead (i heart daniel miller), Friday, 28 October 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

Oh. Er, x-post about the "emo" comment, apparently.

owen moorhead (i heart daniel miller), Friday, 28 October 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

slint was around a lot longer than and before codeine. they're kinda contemporaries but kinda not. anyway, immerwahr has a funny story about seeing slint for the first time, something about watching "four retards make this beautiful, amazing music." funny stuff.

His comment about auditioning drummers is pretty good, too: "It was like stepping on kittens." I know Slint formed first and released an album first, but I always thought of them as being on similar wavelengths; a difference of two or three years obviously must have been a far bigger deal back then than it seems now.

well, even before slint, the guys in slint played in a bunch of different bands together, too. squirrel bait, maurice, solution unknown, etc., etc. people sometimes forget that "tweez" was recorded way back in 1987.

i've never gotten into spiderland as much as some, but i adore codeine. the drum sounds on 'white birch' are v impressive

gotta go with codeine. why? Douglas Scharin!
