Are there any? I'd like to hear them if you know of some.

Sandy Denny to thread.

(not really, but someone had to try).

Well, maybe I should be more clear - I'm really not talking about the singing so much as the music.

It's worth mentioning that I definitely prefer the way Kathryn Calder sings the song. There's a live session version on iTunes that came out this week with her on lead, and it's well worth buying.

Who's Kathryn Calder? Does she fill in on tour when Neko can't do it? I'm intrigued, mostly because I always felt they could do better than Neko for a female voice that fits. She seems to sing ever so slightly flat.

Neko and Kathryn each have qualities that beat out the other vocally, but I'm not sure that song's more right for anyone besides Neko.

Kathryn Calder = Newman's niece, part-time New Pornographer and full-time member of Immaculate Machine.

Damon and Naomi sound a bit like "Bones of an Idol", don't they?

Kathryn is a full-time New Pornographer now as far as I can tell.

Her voice is a lot more timid and fragile and she has this princessy quality that really suits "Bones of an Idol." It's the only NP song that I prefer Kathryn to Neko. Not that I have any real problem with Neko's performance on the album - it's great - but I think that it's a song that benefits from less authority and command.

I hope that in the future, Newman takes greater advantage of having two female singers in the band with different strengths. They seem to use Neko's voice the way other bands would stomp on an overdrive pedal - she adds punch and power, and makes everything sound very exciting. Kathryn's voice works best when it's allowed to be smaller and more demure, and there's a lot they could do with that, especially in contrast with Neko and Dan Bejar.

How about Brian Eno's "Mother Whale Eyeless"?

I like Kathryn's vocal on "Bones..." too!

I love Kathryn's vocal on "Streets of Fire"... it's the only time on the album I can really make out her voice.

I really love the version of "Streets Of Fire" on the iTunes session - they drop the acoustic guitar out and play up the piano, there's no Dan, but Carl, Kathryn and Kurt all sing together beautifully. It's loose and lovely.
