The gap between the last album and this new one is so vast I can't remember enough to compare it to those older releases (which I obviously haven't listened to in a long while). The new one's nice and all, but nothing besides "A Page From the Desert" is memorable once the record's done playing.

I really love this album. Those backing vocals. That coda to His Aging Miss Idaho. The chorus to Fringe. One of my favorites this year.

Wow, this record is fantastic. Maybe my second-favorite of the year behind Okkervil.

this album's a grower. i still think their best is "bringing home the last great strike", but I'm warming to this new one more each time i put it on

Who knew they still existed? I really liked Bringing Home. What's this one like.

Still tragically underrated.

My favorite album of theirs is Rigging The Toplights, which balances the (somewhat) straightforward alt.country of their debut with the as-often-tiring-as-transcendent expansiveness of Bringing Home The Last Great Strike. The only duff track on Rigging is "Measuring Up," which displays Darren's weakness at writing simple, confessional singer-songwriter fare as opposed to the richly detailed story-songs that make up most of the band's output.

Mega bonus points for sampling Boris Badenov, or a decent soundalike, performing a Russian roulette routine ("now you go. here is the pistol"...**gunshot**..."ahaaa, you lose!") on some track off their debut.
