Because I'm very curious about what you all will pick, and I'd never really thought of it myself. It's actually quite hard for me, given how deeply I love Gallowsbird's Bark - it's by far my favorite album of this decade to date.

Inca Rag / Name Game
South Is Only A Home
Rub Alcohol Blues
Worry Worry
Quay Cur
Chief Inspector Blancheflower
Chris Michaels
Birdie Brain
Police Sweater Blood Vow
I Broke My Mind

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Sunday, 30 October 2005 02:56 (twenty years ago)

Haven't heard the new record yet (though it will definitely be my next purchase) so I'll get back to this later.

Ross G. (scatter), Sunday, 30 October 2005 03:58 (twenty years ago)

Chief Inspector Blancheflower

Dylan DeFalco (feelgoodlost), Sunday, 30 October 2005 06:10 (twenty years ago)

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Sunday, 30 October 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

Though when I think about how much I love these guys I think in terms of whole records, not songs per se.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Sunday, 30 October 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

my list is going to have to include "the garfield el." there's not enough love for that track.

jagged little filly (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 30 October 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

I already want to re-do my list so that would include "We Got Back The Plague" and "Here Comes The Summer," but I'll just wait for Bitter Tea to come out to indulge. Besides, I don't know what I'd remove.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Sunday, 30 October 2005 22:19 (twenty years ago)

if you include "broke my mind" shouldnt you half to include which live version you like since apparently no two are the same?

Rub Alcholhol Blues
Up in the North
South is Only a Home
Two fat feet
Chris Michaels
Mason City
Chief Inspector Blancheflower
Evergreen
Spaniolated
Paw Paw Tree

josh w (jbweb), Monday, 31 October 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

Actually, of all the songs that the play live, "I Broke My Mind" has very little variation in arrangement and performance, the only major difference is which song it segues into. And even still, there's only a couple options - it either shifts into "Spaniolated" or "Single Again."

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 31 October 2005 13:44 (twenty years ago)

Anyway, I'm not totally talking about studio recordings as much as the *songs* themselves. A lot of the fun of the Furnaces is hearing lots of different takes on the same songs.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 31 October 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

Quay Cur
Forty Eight Twenty Three Twenty Second Street
Rub-Alcohol Blues
Tropical Ice-Land
The Garfield El
Slavin' Away
Blueberry Boat
Birdie Brain
Up In The North
Single Again

skoolbus39 (skoolbus39), Monday, 31 October 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

Uh hmm...

Birdie Brain
Tropical Ice-Land
Smelling Cigarettes
I Lost My Dog / My Dog Was Lost But Now He's Found
Rehearsing My Choir
Bow Wow
Evergreen
Chris Michaels
Mason City
We Got Back the Plague

There might be more Gallowsbird's songs on here if I had listened to it more recently; I think I've gotten a little burnt out from the live versions.

Eppy (Eppy), Monday, 31 October 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

in no order:

mason city
cousin chris
south is only a home
quay cur
the garfield el
one more time (their clash cover)
leaky tunnel
gale blow
sing for me
a candymaker's knife in my handbag

jagged little filly (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 31 October 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

Wow, totally shocked to see no "Blancheflower" on Eppy's list!

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 31 October 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

Or "Quay Cur"! You are a slippery one, Barthel.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 31 October 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

"Blancheflower" has faded for me; it's definitely not in my top 5 on Blueberry Boat anymore. "Quay Cur" on the other hand probably suffers from the same live overexposure problem that some of the Gallowsbird songs do; if I listen to it right now I'd probably put it on there in place of, eh I dunno, Smelling Cigarettes probably.

Eppy (Eppy), Monday, 31 October 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)

mason city
south is only a home
evergreen
we got back the plague
chief inspector blancheflower
slavin' away (WOEFULLY UNDERRATED)
we wrote letters everyday
chris michaels
crystal clear
does it remind you of when?

ahmahm, Tuesday, 1 November 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

I like "Slavin' Away" a lot but wish it was arranged differently. The end of "Though Let's Be Fair" as it leads into "Slavin' Away" is fantastic, but what happens after the main theme is not so much. The middle could stand to get cut a bit, especially the section from 0:58 to 2:20. 3:00 to 3:20 ain't so vital either.

Eppy (Eppy), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

Although that synth part at 5:20 is one of the best things on the album.

Eppy (Eppy), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

Can someone ysi Gallowsbird? That's be sweet.

Gbro, Wednesday, 2 November 2005 00:30 (twenty years ago)

The entire album? It has sixteen songs!

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 20:39 (twenty years ago)

Single Again
Here Comes The Summer

Chief Inspector Blancheflower
Birdie Brain

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 20:38 (twenty years ago)

Ah, maybe "Chris Michaels" should be in there and not "Birdie Brain." Tough call.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 20:40 (twenty years ago)

There is no way I could listen to ten Fiery Furnaces tracks.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 01:22 (twenty years ago)

Having just heard "Bitter Tea", here's my Top Ten of the Moment:

1) Tropical Ice-land (the "EP" version)
2) Tracks 2-7 on "Blueberry Boat"
3) Tracks 11-13 on "Blueberry Boat"
4) "Benton Harbor Blues"
5) "Inca Rag/The Name Game"
6) "Bitter Tea"
7) "Single Again"
8) "Nevers"
9) "South Is Only a Home"
10) "Here Comes the Summer"

My favorite is still "Blueberry Boat", although "EP" and "Gallowsbird Bark" are both awesome. "Bitter Tea" is a very nice next step that I'm still getting used to (although I already love half the tracks). The "Grandma" album on the other hand...Well, i'm glad they did it--it was certainly a bold move, but still...

Furnace Guy, Sunday, 26 March 2006 01:06 (twenty years ago)

haha, funnily enough, i'm going to have to repeat pretty much the same comment that i made upthread. (maybe without the "next purchase" part, as it doesn't come out until mid-April)

also, come on, "tracks 2-7 on 'Blueberry Boat' " and "tracks 11-13 on 'Blueberry Boat' ", that's totally cheating.

Ross G. (scatter), Sunday, 26 March 2006 21:05 (twenty years ago)

although, if i were to do this with bitter tea excluded, it would go:

1) Chris Michaels
2) Chief Inspector Blancheflower
3) Single Again
4) Here Comes the Summer
5) Quay Cur
6) Evergreen
7) Slavin' Away
8) Blueberry Boat
9) Inca Rag / Name Game
10) Two Fat Feet

with close calls being "Up In the North", "Crystal Clear", "Straight Street", "The Wayward Granddaughter", and "Seven Silver Curses".
