Big L - Harlem's Finest

This guy's freestyling was off the fucking hook...some of the best rapping I've ever heard, and the cuts with Jay-Z on are incredible.

Has anything else in hip-hop EVER been this rawly exciting? Maybe I need to get hold of some of Biggie's freestyles to compare.

Pun excites me as well.. Maybe not as much as Big L, but Pun's flow is a thing of beauty.

The two Harlem's finest comps by Big L are the definitive Big L, i reckon. He totally embarrasses Jay Z on the second half of that freestyle when Hov' starts kicking the lame tiggedy-tongue-twisting style. I like the one over "motherless child" by Ghostface and the mixtape one with Doo Wop over Sauce Money and Jay Z's "pre game".

For old Biggie freestyles check out the Mister Cee-best of B.I.G tape which was all his radio and street freestyles before "ready to die" came out. The one over "ellie's love theme" by Ike Hayes is the one to hear.

The Lox freestyles from old Doo Wop and DJ Clue tapes from around '97-'98 were pretty damn amazing also and, as much as his recorded output sucks, Cannibus used to demolish mixtapes around the same time too. His Doo Wop freestyle over "broken language" by Smoothe Da Hustler is marvellous.

Yeh, re Big L vs Jay, I thought Big L won by a knockout first coupla times I heard it. But I'm not so sure now.

I have an mp3 if you'd like...of course if you want it to play out, then that's irrelevant.
