lol indie.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 31 October 2005 10:31 (twenty years ago)

is there a purpose to this thread?

john p. irrelevant (electricsound), Monday, 31 October 2005 10:33 (twenty years ago)

Dudder than dud.

mzui (mzui), Monday, 31 October 2005 10:35 (twenty years ago)

I'm tempted to go "classic", just because of that Blackburn Rovers chant:

This is how it feels to be Burnley
This is how it feels to be sad
This is how it feels when your sister is shagging your dad.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 31 October 2005 10:37 (twenty years ago)

Not exactly classic, but very much not dud.

What is it with Blackburn fans and Burnley, eh? Burnley at least had a proper record shop.

Mippy (Mippy), Monday, 31 October 2005 10:38 (twenty years ago)

not even the best song off that album.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Monday, 31 October 2005 10:43 (twenty years ago)

which had something to do with goldfish?

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Monday, 31 October 2005 10:43 (twenty years ago)

no, this is how it feels is off the first album "life". revenge of the goldfish was the 3rd album and the one with dragging me down/worlds collide and that

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Monday, 31 October 2005 11:26 (twenty years ago)

i do miss them. lovely booming singing voice.

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Monday, 31 October 2005 11:28 (twenty years ago)

'dragging me down' is a banger.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Monday, 31 October 2005 11:30 (twenty years ago)

classic, esp. in Ultramix 90

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 31 October 2005 11:44 (twenty years ago)

I like the Carter USM version.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Monday, 31 October 2005 11:51 (twenty years ago)

"Sackville" is better.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 31 October 2005 13:02 (twenty years ago)

One of Jo Whiley's favourites, I believe.

Mädchen (Madchen), Monday, 31 October 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

I always liked "She Comes In The Fall."

Mofrackie, Monday, 31 October 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

inspirals > charlatans

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Monday, 31 October 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

Huge fucking dud. I liked "Find Out Why" and "Joe" on the Cool as Fuck e.p., but everything else -- especially this single -- was dire.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 31 October 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

'this is how it feels' is probably their worst single.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Monday, 31 October 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

"Biggest Mountain" is another good one.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 31 October 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

I'll say this much for 'em -- saw them live about a month or two before the second album came out (The Beast Inside, I believe) and they put on a hands-down great show, with a version of "Further Away" that was psych-freak genius.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 31 October 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

haha search function tells me that one calum robert waddell is the only other ilx0r to have started threads on thee inspiral carpets.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Monday, 31 October 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

There's something goofily good about the Inspirals - sort of Herman's Hermits or the Holliesto Stone Roses Beatles, but better than you remembered. They do remind me of a lot of high-quality 60's beat pop though, the sort of semi-formal interplay between the backing vocals and the vocals at times, lack of 'rocking' guitar, the organ...

TIHIF isn't one my absolute favourites, but I've just stuck it on the ipod, and it's really rather splendid. Their best stuff is either based around a cool clint boon riff (Saturn 5, Come Back Tomorrow) or with a BIG BIG chorus (e.g Bitches Brew, Move) or both (Uniform).

I could listen to Clint Boon play all day - what fucking great sounds he gets and how well arranged the keybd parts are! Now playing : 'Come Back Tomorrow' - when you've heard the first 20 secs you know what he's going to do - big farfisa chords for the chorus, piano for the verse, bring in the organ for the second half of the verse, pivot on the solo riff a couple of times - but it sounds so bloody GOOD!

I've good back to Bitches Brew now - more of a Hammondy-sounding Farfisa, sounding like a total fucking beast on the chorus chords - that little phrase he plays with his right hand at the end of the vocals is genius.

Dr.C, Monday, 31 October 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

i started a C/D thread about them on ILE which got moved to ILM (or maybe not)

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 31 October 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

i really like this song. :-(

jagged little filly (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 31 October 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

Fairly classic, but "Directing Traffik," despite the dire title, is the standout from this record. Singer sounds, to my ear, almost exactly like J Cope, and I like IC songs exactly in proportion to how much they sound like Kilimanjaro outtakes. Whence my love for "Directing Traffik."

Guayaquil (eephus), Monday, 31 October 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

I'll say this much for 'em -- saw them live about a month or two before the second album came out (The Beast Inside, I believe) and they put on a hands-down great show, with a version of "Further Away" that was psych-freak genius.

"The Beast Inside" is hugely underrated. Inspiral Carpets are remembered for their singles, and this album didn't have any obvious ones.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 31 October 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

I liked Caravan.

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Monday, 31 October 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

Classic - as was the self-hating Charlie Brooker cartoon with this as its soundtrack. What was it called? "Horny Estelle"?

A.C.M.E. (A.C.M.E.), Monday, 31 October 2005 22:58 (twenty years ago)

mr boon could play a good tune

john p. irrelevant (electricsound), Monday, 31 October 2005 23:47 (twenty years ago)

commercial rain used to sound great on my crappy car stereo.

keyth (keyth), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 02:12 (twenty years ago)

boony's solo stuff was almost entirely embarrassing but 'only one way i can go' is up there with the best inspirals

john p. irrelevant (electricsound), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 02:38 (twenty years ago)

i saw him live one new years eve night in london, dreadful. he attracted a hideous sort of crowd.

keyth (keyth), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 03:04 (twenty years ago)

I used to really love that early EP of theirs "Trainspotting" no that wasn't it...something about a train - "Trainsurfing" that was it. Yeah that was before Clint Boon was vocalist. Fabulous EP.

Bimble The Nimble, Jumped Over A Thimble! (Bimble...), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 03:13 (twenty years ago)

clint boon never did lead in the carpets though

john p. irrelevant (electricsound), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 03:20 (twenty years ago)

Then who was the singer, then?

Bimble The Nimble, Jumped Over A Thimble! (Bimble...), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 03:38 (twenty years ago)

tom hingley

Oh my god I love "Dragging Me Down" off Revenge of Teh Goldfish though, don't get me wrong.

Bimble The Nimble, Jumped Over A Thimble! (Bimble...), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 04:26 (twenty years ago)

This Is How It Feels is a great, booming, silly pop song. The Carter USM version was good too. She Comes In the Fall is good too.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 04:39 (twenty years ago)

Badder than bad, completely killed off my love of The Inspirals, Find Out Why was their last good single of this period. There were some good later singles (I Want You), but my heart was already stone.

holojames (holojames), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 16:26 (twenty years ago)

heard it recently in i vintage shop and thought..hmmmm how vintage...it didn't sound at all like i remembered

bb (bbrz), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

"Biggest Mountain" is another good one.
-- Tom (freakytrigge...), October 31st, 2005.

OTM, I love that song, much better, than this.

zeus (zeus), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

three years pass...

Still a banger

Peter "One Dart" Manley (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Friday, 21 November 2008 23:47 (seventeen years ago)

I never liked this record at all.

the pinefox, Saturday, 22 November 2008 00:41 (seventeen years ago)

five years pass...

For some reason I've had this going round my head for the last day or so even though I haven't heard it in years and years.

doglato dozzy (dog latin), Monday, 10 February 2014 11:01 (twelve years ago)

love those clint boon vocals

föllakzoidberg (electricsound), Monday, 10 February 2014 22:17 (twelve years ago)
