For the non-UK residents, what are the cream of this years crop of great/appalling Xmas tunes. I'm thinking of things like "Proper Crimbo" by Bo Selecta.

I hope Crazy Frog will delight us with a Christmas serenade.

"Chicken Song" by Spitting Image?

I still love the Darkness' Christmas song.

Is this it? Is Ozzy not doing a Christmas record this year, or someone from Coronation St? Where is this year's Mr Blobby?

OK, Tony Christie has done an easy-listening big-band version of Merry Christmas Everybody. It's not very good. There is a bunch of horrible little choirboys singing Clapton's "Tears in Heaven". They are like a pre-pubescent G4, who have also released a (gasp!) cover version, this time it's "When A Child Is Born". Christmas number one likely to be either the winner of the X Factor doing a cover version or Westlife duetting with Diana Ross on a (guess what!) "When You Tell Me That You Love Me". Or Girls Aloud with (wait for it...) a cover of Dee C Lee's "See The Day".

In other news, I believe the Crazy Frog offering involves "U Can't Touch This".

This is more like it. Thanks Ailsa - that all sounds completely gruesome. I'm looking forward to hearing that Cricket Team tune - I'm sure it will be compelling.

The Pogues 14/1
The Choirboys 16/1
Crazy Frog 20/1
James Blunt 25/1
Take That 25/1
The England cricket team 25/1
Robbie Williams 33/1
Santa 33/1
G4 + Cliff Richard/R Gibb 40/1

So, G4 are singing with Cliff? on "When a child"? Good outside bet.

Bad outside bet: "Happy Christmas (War is over)" at 50/1, might as well throw your money in the air and go "Whee".

Girls Aloud, maybe. Xmassy video.

The England cricket team's "song" is a version of "Jerusalem". Despite having been off work and watching a background of crappy cable music channels all day yesterday, it remains the only thing on that list I haven't heard. I strongly suspect I might hear it on Sunday when Freddie Flintoff gets the BBC Sports Personality of the Year and the Ashes squad the equivalent team award.

slade.

The Velvet Overlord (The Velvet Overlord), Friday, 9 December 2005 11:59 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
I still haven't heard most of these. How's the UK chart action this week then?

everything, Friday, 23 December 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

That dude with the rapist dad is bitch-smacking up the charts, with "Your Dad Committed Suicide Because Your Music Sucks" at #2, and some other stuff is still around.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 23 December 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

three years pass...

Can anyone from the UK give us a role call of this year's contenders? The Ladbrokes list doesn't really have anything fun looking:

John & Edward (Not being the X Factor Winner) 10/1
Cheryl Cole 21/1
Alexandra Burke 25/1
Boyzone 25/1

The Beatles 28/1
Robbie Williams 40/1
Take That 40/1
Westlife 40/1
Rihanna 50/1
Cliff Richard 66/1
La Roux 66/1

Michael Buble 66/1
Wham 66/1
Britney Spears 75/1

Peter Andre 75/1
Victoria Beckham 100/1
Basshunter 150/1

interesting lack of amateurish novelty garbage from not-already-famous people there

mdskltr (blueski), Sunday, 29 November 2009 23:22 (sixteen years ago)

That is what is so disappointing about it. Where are the soap opera stars, childrens choirs, fictional characters, sports teams and so on?

everything, Sunday, 29 November 2009 23:30 (sixteen years ago)

It's taken a recession to finally put ostensible dampeners on Chrimbo commercialism. Even big consumer brands are going for a demure, Dickensian approach this year I've noticed. Even pious PR-circuit twits are likely to be steering clear of it this year.

dog latin, Sunday, 29 November 2009 23:40 (sixteen years ago)

that Bo Selecta one from a few years back was probably the worst

mdskltr (blueski), Sunday, 29 November 2009 23:45 (sixteen years ago)

No, there has definetely been worse than that.

everything, Monday, 30 November 2009 00:12 (sixteen years ago)

Not a lot of space for new Xmas records on the lists anymore, now that the incorporation of downloading in sales causes numerous classics to re-enter the charts every Christmas.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Monday, 30 November 2009 00:12 (sixteen years ago)

And btw. "Christmas Day" by Squeeze, "Thanks For Christmas" by Three Wise Men (XTC) and "One Christmas Catalogue" by Captain Sensible are all great and very underrated classics.
