sneaky fellow pforker chris dare put in a copy of cold vein in when he sent me throbbing pouch and so today i finally decided to give it a fair try in headphones during a long walk through the ancient crumbling poor back neighbourhoods of athens to the tiny building at which i pay my phone bill and with the wind blowing around my coat i finally realized what i was missing all along. this is a record about magic! it is about kicking at the knobby outgrowth of a leafless oak and finding an underground world and exploring for weeks but then when you come back home it's only been an afternoon. so i found a gnarled stick wand and gave a special consideration to the wise stone pelican and slowly walked home.

Ethan reviews like brent!

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think he is just kissing up to Ned with some LOTR nonsense. Clearly, Cold Vein is much more Star Wars or Battlestar Galactica.

mark s, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Does anyone remember magic?

David Raposa, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i did, mark!

ethan, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ethan's new writing technique is unstoppable.

JM, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Having not heard Can Ox myself, I'd be a poor candidate for sucking-uppage right about now.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry, Ethan, you were right the first time.

Tom, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well get on it, Ned! With all the damn CDs you buy, th'ain't no excuse. ;-) I haven't even listened to it in the sort of poetic environs that Ethan so lovingly details, and it pretty much amazes me with each new listen.

Clarke B., Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Shush, youngster. ;-) I have eight million things to listen to, and I'll get to stuff as I do. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I warmed to it a few weeks ago, and now take a decent amount of enjoyment in listening to it -- but I it didn't affect me nearly as much as it seems to have affected some others. It just doesn't sound nearly as good as I want it to.

Nitsuh, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Cold Vein was one of a clutch of 2001 albums that were way more fun to talk about than actually listen to. Other candidates: the Matmos album, the Langley Schools album, the Britney album.

Ian, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And Prefuse 73 too, sorry Ethan.

Ian, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think the Ox has enough lyrical play to make its less accessible sound still pretty engaging. And it still has some novelty points for me at least. Matmos and Prefuse I agree on, but Britney? Hm. Was there anything to discuss musically aside from the slave single?

bnw, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Plenty of persona-shift discussion on Britney at the time, for sure. Not so much now. "Anticipating" and "Cinderella" are all that anyone needs off that album. I've been drinking now and Prefuse 73 sounds absolutely great so maybe I should take that one back. "The Ox" really doesn't have that good wordplay, the MCing is so straight- faced and overearnest: "if there's crack in the basement, crackheads stand adjacent, anger displacement", that's a terrible rhyme. Will anyone post to my X-101 thread?

Ian, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

cann ox mcs are still shit but at least they seem a bit serviceable now i guess, but oh my god those deep future beats! i know i overrated prefuse, partly because it was a good topper to my pfork list of hiphop and idm to have a hiphop idm record. it's still a really astonishing album but i know i listened to hot shots ii a hundred times more.

ethan, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It'd be great to hear an instrumental version of 'Cold Vein'... does anyone know of any plans for one?

Clarke B., Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ethan is sane again! welcome back :-)

Jeff W, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Clarke: I read somewhere earlier this week that an instrumental "Cold Vein" is indeed in the works.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

AESOP ROCK

David Raposa, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

DAVER IS SO TOTALLY IN LOVE WITH AESOP ROCK.

Nitsuh, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

HE WANTS TO HAVE A MILLION OF HIS BAAAAAAAAAAAAABIES.

jess, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was listening to The Cold Vein last night and Ethan's dead right.

Robin Carmody, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Daver and Aesop
Sitting in a tree
R-H-Y-M-I-N-G.

First come beats
Then comes flow
Then a teeny little baby
With her hair in a bow.

Nitsuh, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I wanted a boy, damn it. Stupid X chromosomes.

David Raposa, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ew, flow

mark s, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

THANK YOU ROBIN!!

ethan, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I wanted a boy, damn it.

It's a girl, Daver, and you're going to name her Lucy and teach her to draw even though that is the worst song on the record.

Nitsuh, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Life's not a bitch,

Life's a beautiful woman,

You just called her a bitch coz she won't give up that pussy.

JM, Saturday, 2 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

four months pass...
About 15 minutes ago I put THE COLD VEIN and the instrumental version of same on at the same time (running thru my mixer). Now, my head is spinning, I am disoriented and (pleasantly, I hope you know what I mean) nauseous. I'm waiting for the walls to start breathing. My pet birds are, rightfully, upset with me.
