this stuff is so much fun!!

El Tomboto, Saturday, 22 March 2008 08:38 (sixteen years ago) link

all of their songs are about flicking a lit cigarette out the window of a moving car while driving or riding about, taking care of business. important business that must be done on clear sunny days.

El Tomboto, Saturday, 22 March 2008 09:18 (sixteen years ago) link

i love these dudes!

omar little, Saturday, 22 March 2008 16:20 (sixteen years ago) link

sophomore effort is only slightly less awesome than the first album. When I heard UFTS on the NFL Network I thought it must have been some old library track or something. NFL Films should hire these guys as the house band, actually.

i like em

i listen to this on a regular basis. i have a weakness for the nasty organ and horns-based funk.

FUCKING LOVE THIS SHIT

El Tomboto, Friday, 27 June 2008 05:50 (fifteen years ago) link

at first I was convinced I was just being the usual infatuated dilletante because I haven't had the chance to listen to a lot of 60s/70s fusion jazz and funk stuff and these guys were just driving through treadmarks, but now I realize this is indeed honed machinery, not another attempt at reformulating damascus steel

I might be a bit drunk but I have an idea that this shit might very well make a good soundtrack to a movie about the trojan war

the second album is just such a nice, warm-sounding recording

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 16:04 (fifteen years ago) link

The 2nd album has a nice sound, until you try to really hear what's going on, then it becomes unpleasantly murky.

It sounds to me like the horns were all recorded in one go, in a big room, and while it's nice that they sound all together, they sound divorced from the rest of the band, and there is no real definition between the instruments. It's kind of like listening through gauze, or you have a wax build-up in your ears.

The first album sounds like they were striving for something, but didn't really know where they were going, or how to get there, and lots of times I like that. It's like all those early white English blooz bands, that didn't quite get it right, and created something new, instead.

factcheckr, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 18:21 (fifteen years ago) link

i think you're right about about the horns, except i don't have a hard time picking out the different horn or rhythm section parts, it sounds pretty clear to me.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 17 November 2009 23:50 (fourteen years ago) link

i got the second one, don't have the first one, but they seem like a band that kinda does what they does

Yeah, I'm digging this. Doomy and funky. I guess the doom is new for them? I'm not sure if I've heard Budos Band before.

V is another solid amalgamation of proto-doom & Afro-funk; this music begs to be driven to--and I don't have a car :(

It's all about groovy riffs and riffy grooves

I like this one but kinda wish they'd drop the doom schtick

Paul Ponzi, Thursday, 18 April 2019 18:39 (five years ago) link

New one is great, feels like they've found a really nice balance by using the doom a little more sparingly.
