the Sexual Harrassment thread

i was being my usual shitty self and derailing an ILM thread, this time by quoting lyrics from Sexual Harrassment's "I Need A Freak" (incorrectly, I should note) on the Laid Back "White Horse" thread..

..thankfully someone came to the rescue, namely (and all signs point to legit!) someone who used to be a member of early 80s funk/dance group Sexual Harrassment!!!

For those who don't want to search out the Laid Back thread (all respect to Laid Back of course), I'll quote the relevant parts and let the thread continue from here..

...

I recently heard a song released by the Black-Eyed Peas titled "My Humps" The music reminded me so much of a song my band did back in the 1980's "I Need a Freak" so I decided to investagate if there was a connection. Much to my suprise it was written by David Payton aka Lynn Tolliver. Lynn Tolliver is the creator of Sexual Harassment. If any of you own an actual copy the the Sexual Harassment EP (the cover has a picture of two women, one is pulling the other one's hair) you'll see my name on the back cover. I'm Dale Jackson drummer and vocals for the band. I had no idea how popular we had become and now I see that our music is being re-released.
Dan Selzer - How in the world did you come across the 12 "We want Prince" we only made a few copies - that one is rare!

Sexual Harassment Releases:

Dale, assuming you're legit (please no offense if you are, but it's hard to tell these days with rampant anonymity/faking on the net and all), I just played "I Need A Freak" a few weeks ago to a dancefloor in Vancouver.. the song has always been above the radar but recently has been getting rediscovered. If that is your voice, it did the job damn well. :)
-- dali madison's nut (do...), December 20th, 2005.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It gets played a lot in Montreal, too.
-- Jay Watts III (goldkick...), December 20th, 2005.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

it gets played a lot everywhere. it's a bona fide classic. good work dale!
-- stirmonster (jd_*!!!!...), December 20th, 2005.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In fact, a definitive Sexual Harrassment reissue might be just what the world needs.
*hoping to seed minds of people in a position to make this happen*

Ellen Margulies sat in a cloistered room, trying to see if the flower would bloom, tasted the sweet pollen and opened her eyes, rode the White Pony.
-- Jay Watts III (goldkick...), December 20th, 2005.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

wow!
hey-it was stirmonster who has the We Want Prince 12", I'd never heard about it and was just joking about how ballsy it is to name a song after an influence like that! I knew Lynn Tolliver was involved because another member of this community, Lauren, found that out somehow, and being from Cleveland, was familiar with him as a Cleveland radio personality of some sort? Had no idea he was behind a Black Eyed Peas song though!

And I know I Need a Freak is classic, but I'm still all about If I Gave You A Party.

-- Dan Selzer (danselze...), December 20th, 2005.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"I need a freak" is on the Andrew Weatherall fabric mix cd.
Presumably you're aware of that Dale.
-- Bn1 (brothernumber...), December 20th, 2005.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I love I need a freak but if I gave you a party is one of the best EVER. So sweet.
-- Raw Patrick (rawsweate...), December 20th, 2005.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes, Dali I'm legit and no offense taken. I currently live in a surburb of Cleveland, Ohio. Tynn Tolliver is the lead voice that you hear on record. When we performed live I would do the lead parts because he did want to get onstage. We all did vocals on the EP and 12" records. Thanks for your support! - Keep Sexual Harassment Alive!!!!
The group began with Lourdes Figueroa (A latina hottie who later became Mrs. Lynn Tolliver) and Myself. We later became a multi-ethnic band with a little something for everybody. Sexy, Hot and Horney - Good concept..It worked!

I have a couple of the origional radio commericals that aired back then. The audio quality is very poor because they were recorded on cassette tape. I'll try to clean them up and provide a link.

-- Dale Jackson (adogi...), December 20th, 2005.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stirmonster sorry for the mistake on "We want Prince" I noticed that I credited the wrong person after I posted my comments. We also had a song titled "Sex Drive" that remains unreleased.
When I was tying to find a connection between the Black Eyed Peas "My Humps" and "I Need A Freak" I came across all of these links referencing our band.
I was so suprised and excited. Lynn Tolliver now works for Hot 105.7 FM WHJX in Florida as the Program Director.

I did hear preview of "I Need a Freak" on Andrew Wetherall's Fabric 19 CD. I Like the way it mixes into The Egyptian Lover – Freak-A-Holic track. I fact I e-mailed Andrew thru the Haywire website (www.haywire.co.uk)last nite. He didn't seem to have a site of his own. I also like the "If I Gave you a Party" remix by Syrup. The only other "I Need A Freak" remix release that I knew of was by rapper Too Short awhile back. To be honest with you I don't belive that Lynn is aware of all the remixes either.

-- Dale Jackson (adogi...), December 20th, 2005.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sorry..
Correction: When we performed live I would do the lead parts because he didn't want to get onstage.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WTF? How did this become the Sexual Harrasment thread? When's the reissue coming out? Hott!!
-- Bobby Peru (per...), December 20th, 2005.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sorry Bobby, I found this page while searching for information about my band. There was so much love for SH music that I had to comment.
-- Dale Jackson (adogi...), December 20th, 2005.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i don't have the 'we want prince', i've just heard it.
there have been a few covers of 'i need a freak'. this one is a bootleg that adds new drums and extends it. there's at least another two cover versions of it apart from the one by too short but the artists names escape me just now.

copies of this pressing turned up in the shops recently.

lynn tolliver is still a prominent radio personality in cleveland. i think he used to own wzak, the urban station... don't know what the deal is now.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 18:15 (eighteen years ago) link

i just bought We Want Prince 12" on ebay for $5.99...hmmm hope it was not a bootleg!
I have almost everything else, including the original LP and also let it be known that Gomma Records repressed the entire original LP as a promo only vinyl release that I have as well....it came in a die cut white jacket. Their Anti NY comp featured If I Gave You A Party (+ remixes of that song) and they pressed that promo LP right around the same time.

oh i never caught that part, which makes the cheekiness of the full length repressing extra cheeky! (and commisioning remixes too!) (and licensing those remixes to other comps!) oh lordy, this goes deep....maybe Dale can shed some light / knowledge....

hi LP.

GALKIN (GALKIN), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 20:15 (eighteen years ago) link

Hello GALKIN,
Lynn Tolliver has the rights to the material. He created the group.
If there are any copyright issues to deal with it's up to Lynn to resolve them. Kinda sucks thought although we worked in the studio to create the EP most of us didn't have writing credits.

Dale Jackson, Wednesday, 21 December 2005 22:13 (eighteen years ago) link

i actually gave gomma tolliver's website info, but i don't know if they did anything.

I don't Lynn Tolliver was actually involved in "My Humps." I think BEP just sampled the "I Need A Freak" synth line, and Lynn collects royalties.

Sexual Harrassment is a great band, and I love hearing those songs played out on a big system.i just had a house party, and i sent out a homemade "if i gave you a party" remix with the invitations. everybody liked it, and everyone came.

I actually just got Gomma to send me a few more of those repressed promo EP's...they must still have some. My brother gave me an original EP for xmas last year, with cover art, great gift! KISSING is a really great 12" too. The remixes they got were kind of crappy and not really needed. There is a Syrup remix of If I Gave You A Party on the Anti NY comp on Gomma and a John Selway remix of I Need A Freak as well (on a Kenny Glasgow mix CD, not sure where else it is available...) I always thought trax like I Need A Freak were as famous as Egyptian Lover-type tunes, but I guess I am wrong!

GALKIN (GALKIN), Thursday, 22 December 2005 20:00 (eighteen years ago) link

I think the selway remix came out as a boot 12" at some point.

I'm FIENDING for this shit. OK, I've got original vinyl of I Need A Freak and the AntiNY comp w/ Gave You a Party. But I just presently learned of the other tracks and I need to hear 'em real real bad. Somebody please YSI. Leave it on my voicemail. Courier me an 8-Track. Something.

Bobby Peru (Bobby Peru), Thursday, 22 December 2005 23:42 (eighteen years ago) link

Haha! I first heard this track a year or so ago being played by Magda, and it fitted perfectly into her set of modern minimal house. I didn't realise it was quite so old until today! Great tune guys.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 17:45 (eighteen years ago) link

I've heard "I Need A Freak" played by Weatherall, Dan Bell, Falco Brocksieper, Jay Haze and a bunch of minimal techno DJs. It seems to be experiencing a resurgence lately. It's a classic along with "If I Gave You A Party," but I didn't know there was an album too.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 23:53 (eighteen years ago) link

It's definitely a classic by now, anyone who's been listening to electrohouse pretty much is guaranteed to know this tune.

This version is quite good too, it was on Ivan Smagghe's How to Kill The DJ mix.

What I love is how simple the album is but how much song writing skill went into it. I mean the various vocal pitch levels so that one voice stands out without being louder, the modulation in "Exercise Your Ass Off", and just having solid song parts from simple repeated phrases. It's inspirational. Solid live drums that aren't busy - sh*t I could go on.

I remember when Sexual Harrassmentput out the "I Need A Freak" LP. I remember Lynn Tolliver being a radio DJ on WZAK 93.1 in Cleveland and adding in the "Oh You Know...I Need a Freak" man and it was the jam. We played it night and day. But if there is anyone out there that knows how to get a copy of Jeffrey Charles' "Tonight At Nine" let me know. He was a radio personality too and may have had some help with Sexual Harrassment, not sure on that, but he used to date my sister Connie and I would like to get a copy of that jam "Tonight at Nine". email me at dawgl✧✧✧@ya✧✧✧.c✧✧
