John Giorno John Giorno: C or D, S/D

John Giorno is not strictly a musician. He is a performance poet; however, recordings of his poetry are interesting to me primarily for their quasi-musical value. (As poetry on the page, I cannot find much to like about his work.) His delivery is somewhat similar to that of an evangelist, and in some of his recordings he very effectively makes use of overdubs. I think every line is repeated at least once in his work. Generally he writes about gay/junkie NYC bohemian life from a Tibetan Buddhist perspective, which could be boring, but it isn't. I get the impression that not much of his recorded work is still in print, which I think is a shame. Also, he runs Giorno Poetry Systems, which releases a lot of material by others, as well as some of his own (but maybe not enough).

Very New York bohemian establishment (just look at the artists he has collaborated with, partied with, and included on his compilations), almost provincial in his cosmopolitanism, but to me, funny and interesting.

Also, he makes very effective, funny, use of lines from pop songs in some of his work.

Not about Giorno himself, but...

On the LP 'You're the guy I want to share my money with has a great one by Wm Burroughs called 'The Do-Rights'

"...he asked me what the American flag meant to me. I said 'soak it in heroin, Doc, and I'll suck on it!'"

I second the You're the Guy . . . recommendation. Really nice Burroughs readings and some of Giorno's own most compelling "performances," including "I Don't Want It, I Don't Need It, and You Cheated Me Out of It." Also, some Laurie Anderson foolery and, on the vinyl version, the fourth side contains three separate grooves, one from each contributor, so you never know who you're getting when you lower your tone arm . . .

Hazy memories of listening to A Diamond Hidden In The Mouth Of A Corpse as a teen and being a bit bewildered by it all
