chop the last four; they're b-sides from the 12" singless that came out around the album.

waldo jeffers scenario (haitch), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 02:51 (twenty years ago)

thank you.

Christopher Costello (CGC), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 02:59 (twenty years ago)

the cassette version of the orig album included 'Rollercoaster', 'Starship' and 'O.D. Catastrophe'.

jim p. irrelevant (electricsound), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 03:02 (twenty years ago)

"the cassette version of the orig album included 'Rollercoaster', 'Starship' and 'O.D. Catastrophe'."

and you need these in a big way. i lost my tape copy and bought an american reissue on cd and it sounded like crapola. buyer beware.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 03:45 (twenty years ago)

What's with that? Does the original vinyl sound good? I've heard two different versions of this album on CD and they both sound crapola.

Which doesn't detract from the sheer maelstrom of crazed drug fuzz these guys can whip up. This is my fave album by them.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 04:36 (twenty years ago)

I still have my cassette copy! I love that thing.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 04:38 (twenty years ago)

Do not buy the TAANG! reissue of "Perfect Prescription." It sounds like shit and has pops and skips mastered onto the disc itself.

The other commonly available version (the Bomp reissue, I think?) sounds a lot better but has "Ecstacy Symphony" and "Transparent Radiation" as one track, instead of split into two. I don't think that it has any bonus tracks, either.

Also excellent is "Forged Prescriptions," which came out a few years ago. Basically a must-have album for any fan of "Perfect Prescription."

vartman (novaheat), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 07:03 (twenty years ago)

I should note that the Bomp version is "commonly available" via e-bay and such. The TAANG! one is the one you're likely to find in stores. Or at least that was my experience. "Forged Prescriptions" is on Space Age and therefore sounds great.

vartman (novaheat), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 07:05 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I ordered the bomp reissue version from Barnes and Nobels a few years ago.

Jamey Lewis (Jameys Burning), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 07:09 (twenty years ago)

I have the fire records CDs of perfect prescription and sound of confusion from the UK, which I found here as imports in JB hi-fi a couple of years ago. they lack the bonus tracks but the sound is fine, get them.

waldo jeffers scenario (haitch), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 10:36 (twenty years ago)

My copy of P.P. is on Genius with "Rollercoaster" and "Starship" but not "OD" (which is on "Sound Of Confusion", yeah?). Is this the "crapola" one scott referred to above? Always sounded OK to me, but now I have a vinyl copy as well.

OMG Forced Exposure has ONE Spacemen 3 release in stock. This is so wrong. WTF? Is this all out of print now?

sleeve (sleeve), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

The really crappy "Perfect Prescription" is the TAANG! one. The others all sound ok.

Most Spacemen 3 stuff should be in print. "Recurring" and "Playing with Fire" are both on Space Age (along with "Forged Prescriptions") and are readily available, along with the "Live in Europe 1989" recording, "Sound of Confusion", "Taking Drugs...", etc.

The problem is that no one really knows who they are anymore, so they don't sell well, and consquently record store owners won't stock it. It's the same with Spiritualized, to a lesser degree. The record store I work at stocks Spiritualized's "Complete Works, Vol. 2" and "Amazing Grace," but nothing else. I've tried ordering myself a new copy of "Lazer Guided Melodies" and it's been back-ordered for over a month.

We don't stock any Spacemen 3 stuff, and even if we did, virtually no one I've talked to has ever heard of them.

vartman (novaheat), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

Traded in my Playing with Fire at the local shop after i'd upgraded to the 2CD. Every time i've been in there since, they've had it filed in their used 'Jazz' section. I keep moving it to 'Used Rock SP-SZ'; they keep putting it back in 'Jazz'. It would be fun(ny) if it weren't so sad.

Ghost Bear Junior High Attendance Party (echoinggrove), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

yeah, the really crappy one is the taang one. i have a copy of the genius reissue and it is better, but i think it's mixed too low or something. i really have to crank my stereo up when i play it. this was not the case with my original tape copy! or maybe it's just nostalgia on my part. too bad sympathy for the record industry didn't put it out. their sonic/spectrum singles comp sounded great.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

dood "Revolution" swings like a motherfucker!

haha... uh... yeah

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

who are these noones that no longer know them...thats a goddamned pitty. have we hit thepoint where everyone stops talking about them because it seems overdone?

i gave up my perfect when i bought forged. and im not happy to have had to do it. why the hell can't someone do it right? we tried to play it at a show a few weeks ago and i dumped some random spoken stuff on top to make it sound less crappy

bb (bbrz), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

the warlocks still like spacemen 3. i still like spacemen 3. but i'm old.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

they never had much of an audience in America, I'm not surprised at their low profile. Tho I personally namecheck them all the time (but hey who listens to me? nobody)

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

not many people heard them at the time but everyone who did started a band. oh, wait, that wasn't them.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

FE's review of Confusion said something to that effect, iirc.

Ghost Bear Junior High Attendance Party (echoinggrove), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

i think i first heard of them via byron in spin. he was definitely my go-to guy back then.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

I forget how I came across them - my brother probably read about them in NME or something and then I borrowed his copies.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

I discovered them via Spiritualized. Now that they're an established band in their own right, the ex-S3 thing doesn't get mentioned in SPZ interviews like it used to, so I guess there are a lot of fans out there who know nothing about Jason's old band (even though he still plays S3 songs live!?!)

I also have the TAANG version -- getting the Space Ace 2CD reissue was the best re-purchase I ever made.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

can i just say one more time, with feeling, that no matter what you end up buying or downloading, you NEED *Rollercoaster*.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 29 December 2005 01:01 (twenty years ago)

the 17-minute one!!

waldo jeffers scenario (haitch), Thursday, 29 December 2005 01:19 (twenty years ago)

These guys were funny.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 29 December 2005 01:21 (twenty years ago)

I used to just crank that up on repeat and stare at the wall for hours. good times.

waldo jeffers scenario (haitch), Thursday, 29 December 2005 01:23 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, their music makes you WANT to do lots of drugs.
