The most popular of the Fabric mixes - anyone know?

I'd be interested 'cos in the past few years they've covered a lot of styles. Trend-wise, the most talked about seem to have been Swayzak, Mayer, Smagghe, Le Cont, I guess. Sales-wise? Dunno, but Digweed probably sold a lot cos of his fanbase.
For the record, my favorites are Craig Richards & Adam Beyer.

for us at amoeba sf (and i don't have the numbers in front of me), i think it's like akufen, weatherall, diplo and mayer.

heywood jablomi (heywood), Saturday, 31 December 2005 00:01 (twenty years ago)

Le Cont, Weatherall, Mayer perhaps?

fandango (fandango), Saturday, 31 December 2005 00:06 (twenty years ago)

I've said before that I reckon the Mayer mix was the flashpoint for the dance music vinyl stores in Melbourne to start seriously changing what they stocked ("US house/club" shelving has remained steady while techno and prog have diminished in inverse proportion to the expansion of "German/electro" shelves).

Vahid was right about the Doc Martin mix, which is awesome.

No idea which one's sold the biggest though.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 31 December 2005 00:09 (twenty years ago)

The Jacques one sells the best with us and is regularly sold out at the distributor, I'd hazard a guess that it's the biggest seller.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 31 December 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

I don't know from most popular but I'll sure tell you what I think. Doc Martin is the ass-kickinest. Craig Richards>Michael Mayer=Carl Craig>Diplo.

viborgu, Saturday, 31 December 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

thirded on the doc martin. i ignored it when it came out but a chance listen showed me the error of my ways...

heywood jablomi (heywood), Saturday, 31 December 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)

I'd like to talk about the Doc Martin mix actually, I've been listening to it a lot. I'm not sure if I know of many deep house mixes which maintain that dreamy/propulsive balance so perfectly and consistently (the Weatherall Live @ the Social is one, though that's quite a different vibe, a lot... drier?), I keep waiting for it to veer off into polite MAW territory and it never does, instead it remains obstinately spacy.

What are suggestions for other mixes like this (incl. other Doc Martin mixes obv)... Vahid? Blunt? etc?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 31 December 2005 22:07 (twenty years ago)

Why does this stuff only get discussed in the form of epic battles between hopelessly divided tribes of dance fans?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 2 January 2006 07:36 (twenty years ago)

vahid (vahid), Monday, 2 January 2006 08:27 (twenty years ago)

I defer to Ronan in his insider knowledge but I'd guess the Peel mix must be one of the biggest sellers now, or doesn't that count as it's Fabriclive.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 2 January 2006 17:37 (twenty years ago)

I haven't heard any of the mixes discussed, or maybe a 1/2 hour version of Doc Martin's when it came out. You can tell from its tracklisting that Vahid's list is spot on because of the UK/proggish selections & producers involved.

From "polite MAW territories", tap-dancing on streets paved with bongos and lined with congas, I remain,
yrs fthfly, Blunt

blunteando (blunt), Monday, 2 January 2006 19:16 (twenty years ago)

i'm sure the jon marsh one was probably a low-seller, but it's one of my faves...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 2 January 2006 20:02 (twenty years ago)

Thanks Vahid!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 2 January 2006 21:05 (twenty years ago)

"From "polite MAW territories", tap-dancing on streets paved with bongos and lined with congas, I remain,"

I should note that I don't have any issue with polite MAW territory (and by that i didn't mean that MAW are always polite, but that they have a polite end - cf. their more energetic stuff e.g. "Work") - it's more that I'm used to deep house mixes spending at least half their time exploring MAW/Feliciano style songful stuff.

If anything the Doc Martin mix veers closer to a harder style as it goes on - that space b/w Classic and Cajual - although I probably slightly prefer the lustrousness of the first half.

Nite:Life 17 by Kenny Hawkes looks pretty good too I reckon.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 2 January 2006 21:32 (twenty years ago)

Yes, whatever floats your bateau, Cap'n Finney.

blunt (blunt), Monday, 2 January 2006 23:30 (twenty years ago)

eeeek

upcoming Fabric mix from Rolando

(according to the Fabric e-flyer)

manuel (manuel), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 06:55 (twenty years ago)

I'm embarrassed to have to ask, but: who is this Rolando? Hopefully not the first one that comes up on Discogs (gabber dude with a single release, average review of 1.5/5)...

Also, I'm wondering what the deal is with the Villalobos mix... the Fabricfirst newsletter has this to say:

NB. Ricardo Villalobos is working on a kind of concept/artist album for the series to be scheduled when completed next year (man).

I guess it could be another artist album, like Pure Science's Fabric release (boo, kind of) or hopefully something like K.I.M.'s Miyage on Tigersushi (mix album full of original productions).
