Half-assed attempt at a serious answer with plenty o' generalizations (or maybe just one):
When hip hop talks about crack, it's not usually talking about using it, it's usually talking about selling it.
When ROCK talks about heroin, it's usually talking about how much it loves to sidle up beside death.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 14:59 (eighteen years ago) link

Whereas hip hop gets its Death-Love on via guns.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 15:02 (eighteen years ago) link

H'mmmm, there's any number of Nas and Raekwon songs that mention 'heron' (with the latter syllable pronounced like the name 'Ron'), which I always thought meant heroin.

M Carty (mj_c), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 15:04 (eighteen years ago) link

it's a generalisation, of course, but it seems there's a "glamourisation" of it in rock that's not in hiphop (which is weird cos both talk about alcohol, cocaine, weed, Es, etc.).

BG! duh! google search:

From what I know, it seems you’ve had to overcome some rough spots in your life.
I had a heroin addiction. I used to shoot heroin. I started getting loaded when I was 15-16. In July, it will be two years that I’ve been clean. I got a son. He looks up to me and he respects me to the highest. My daddy got killed when I was 12 years old so my mom was stuck raising two boys by herself. When you’re in the ghetto, in the hood, a single parent raising two boys it’s kind of hard on you. So the streets took me under, adopted me and I got caught up. The shit I’ve been through, the shit I’ve seen made me the man I am today. You got to go through stuff. Experience is the best teacher. I wouldn’t trade my past for nothing. I’m glad I went through it because it got me to where I’m at. I feel like I overcame with faith and positive people around me. I got to be here for some reason because I should be in penitentiary or dead or something.

there wasn't much talk of ecstasy or LSD in hip-hop either, at least until this decade. it does seem a bit odd.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 15:53 (eighteen years ago) link

that said, i think there's more mention of alcohol in hiphop/rnb than in rock these days.

AleXTC (AleXTC), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 15:55 (eighteen years ago) link

Ecstasy wasn't popular in places outside of raves until the late '90s. And Missy was singing about it by then.

but why not? this has probably been explored before but i don't recall a satisfactory explanation to hand.

actually what substances do "rockers" talk about nowadays !? thinking about the most famous english and american bands of the last years, i don't see any (but i'm not too familiar with their lyrics...).
hiphop/rnb would be various alcohols (champagnes, cognacs...), weed, Es, coke, crack...

AleXTC (AleXTC), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 16:02 (eighteen years ago) link

All rock musicians today are already too drunk on themselves.

The Godfather of Soul has a GREAT anti-heroin track "King Heroin". Its a rap, too. No real singing. Could this be the proto-horse rap?
