"What are our influences? The Pointer Sisters, Rachmaninov... I dunno."

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah: why you so crazy!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 6 January 2006 11:46 (twenty years ago)

Corrine Bailey Rae: sweet Holliday-esque predicterama

I've gone off Plan B already (vocally and lyrically, at least)

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Friday, 6 January 2006 11:49 (twenty years ago)

I'd be _very_ surprised if Plan B has more commercial upside than Sway.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 6 January 2006 11:51 (twenty years ago)

Corrine Bailey Rae: will she match the enormous commercial success of The Bravery? Stay tuned.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 6 January 2006 11:53 (twenty years ago)

I think it's safe to say that I am unlikely to warm to anyone whose PR involves her being described as "the new Billie Holiday"

CLassic or Dadaismus? (Dada), Friday, 6 January 2006 11:55 (twenty years ago)

jeez, that mouseover effect (on firefox) is rather fit inducing.

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Friday, 6 January 2006 11:58 (twenty years ago)

Corrine Bailey Rae: will she match the enormous commercial success of The Bravery? Stay tuned.

b-b-but the bravery *had* enormous commercial success! however justified.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 6 January 2006 12:10 (twenty years ago)

b-b-but the bravery *had* enormous commercial success!one top 40 single before everything else they released stagnated outside of the charts, however justified.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 6 January 2006 12:17 (twenty years ago)

To the best of my knowledge I've never heard teh Bravery. Big success, lads.

I Am Sexless and I Am Foul (noodle vague), Friday, 6 January 2006 12:18 (twenty years ago)

I heard the bravery's single a few times. I liked it, but not so much that I bought their album.

I just got high i mean sick from looking at that page in firefox, and running the mouse pointer up & down the screen repeatedly.

Classic bullshit here as well:

Dubbed the British Eminem, his savage tales of drugs, crime and violence are likely to attract controversy.

He says: "Yeah, I'm being blunt and I'm using bad language but I'm just trying to portray something real."

"real" like Grand Theft Auto is "real". how are "savage tales drugs, crime and violence" any more real than, say "genteel tales of tea on the lawn & sending yr kids to boarding school" ffs? What a crock.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 6 January 2006 12:23 (twenty years ago)

I have heard them and seen them and I am a notoriously tough market to crack.

Apparently it is also the year of C86 Redux, if that affects anyone.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 6 January 2006 12:25 (twenty years ago)

"Dubbed the British Eminem" - this is actually even worse than "the new Billie Holiday"

CLassic or Dadaismus? (Dada), Friday, 6 January 2006 12:27 (twenty years ago)

Results 1 - 10 of about 14,200 for "british eminem". (0.78 seconds)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 6 January 2006 12:29 (twenty years ago)

Kubb are: A mainstream croon-rock group led by Harry Collier, who was discovered when he belted out happy birthday to customers at his cafe.

Actually, he was the frontman of Cornwall's most popular mid-90s funk-rock band Rootjoose, who wore jesters' hats and patchwork trousers and covered 'Taxman' on their sole album. This fact has been omitted in all KUbb's press biogs, presumably for space reasons, so I'm making an effort to rectify this wherever I can

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 6 January 2006 12:30 (twenty years ago)

!!!!!

Rootjoose!!!!!!!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 6 January 2006 12:31 (twenty years ago)

Results 1 - 5 of about 6 for "british vanilla ice". (0.47 seconds)

NickB (NickB), Friday, 6 January 2006 12:31 (twenty years ago)

This is nearly as great as when I found out that the lead singer of upcoming shouty punk angsters The Fight was the guitarist from the 21st Century Girls.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 6 January 2006 12:32 (twenty years ago)

What is the evidence for this being the year of C86 Redux?

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 6 January 2006 12:32 (twenty years ago)

A mainstream croon-rock group

It just gets worse

Your search - "british dex jux allstars" - did not match any documents.

Suggestions:

* Make sure all words are spelled correctly.
* Try different keywords.
* Try more general keywords.

I'll stop now.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 6 January 2006 12:33 (twenty years ago)

A mainstream croon-rock group

It just gets worse

sorry, man, but it isn't worse than "the british eminem". Nothing could possibly be worse than that.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 6 January 2006 12:33 (twenty years ago)

Fair comment

CLassic or Dadaismus? (Dada), Friday, 6 January 2006 12:34 (twenty years ago)

A croon-rock Eminem?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 6 January 2006 12:35 (twenty years ago)

Stuff that would be as bad:

The british neil young

the british eagles.

the british nirvana

the british limp bizkit

too depressing to think of any more.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 6 January 2006 12:37 (twenty years ago)

An article in Uncut about C86's 20th anniversary, in which Bob Stanley talks about putting some gigs on or something. I think they are going to be "curated" by the original bands, but some of them are reforming for the occasion.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 6 January 2006 12:39 (twenty years ago)

the british limp bizkit

Remember "A"?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 6 January 2006 12:39 (twenty years ago)

sure do!

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Friday, 6 January 2006 12:42 (twenty years ago)

There are ex-members of A who prob'ly don't remember A.

I Am Sexless and I Am Foul (noodle vague), Friday, 6 January 2006 12:43 (twenty years ago)

The Feeling say: "Don't fear the cheese. Embrace it." Singer Dan Gillespie

Way to make yourself look like copper bottomed dickheads, whoever you are. "These are my favourite bands. I like them ironically."

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 6 January 2006 12:46 (twenty years ago)

Has anyone who isn't a South Wales resident, on regional PR mailing lists or an A&R man actually heard the Automatic?

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 6 January 2006 12:48 (twenty years ago)

The Automatic do have a "Shit we've got nine people on this list... ummm, are there any other bands out there?" ring to them.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 6 January 2006 12:53 (twenty years ago)

the blurb on Guillemots is by far the worst

zebedee (zebedee), Friday, 6 January 2006 13:00 (twenty years ago)

shame, for the guillemots are interesting.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 6 January 2006 13:05 (twenty years ago)

I saw the June Brides play the other night. They were great.

The forces of mimsy are massing again. It's like the Lord of the Rings but with Stephen Pastel instead of Sauron, or whatever.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 6 January 2006 13:35 (twenty years ago)

Stephen Pastel didn't have much to do with C86 tho

CLassic or Dadaismus? (Dada), Friday, 6 January 2006 13:49 (twenty years ago)

Well no but he's the DARK HEART of the MIMSY NATION.

(No more than you did, you mean?)

Tim (Tim), Friday, 6 January 2006 13:55 (twenty years ago)

The Pastels really belonged in the void between C81 and C86

CLassic or Dadaismus? (Dada), Friday, 6 January 2006 13:57 (twenty years ago)

Yes. And what a void that was.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 6 January 2006 13:59 (twenty years ago)

forces of mimsy

*fnarr*

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 6 January 2006 14:00 (twenty years ago)

The article in question is illustrated with a photo of a record by the Lob Cloisters. That is really why I drew attention to the matter in the first place.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 6 January 2006 14:11 (twenty years ago)

Where's the money?

CLassic or Dadaismus? (Dada), Friday, 6 January 2006 14:17 (twenty years ago)

Any pics of those dashingly handsome Cloisters themselves, PJM, or just one of their records?

Did the Lobsters play in the original C86 ICA dates? Is a reunion show on the cards?

Tim (Tim), Friday, 6 January 2006 14:23 (twenty years ago)

Did the Lobsters play in the original C86 ICA dates? Is a reunion show on the cards?

They did. No idea - but unlikely to be the full line-up if it ever happened, if you know what I mean.

CLassic or Dadaismus? (Dada), Friday, 6 January 2006 14:26 (twenty years ago)

I think I know what you mean, and if you mean what I think you mean I think that's a shame.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 6 January 2006 14:35 (twenty years ago)

Just a record. Along with some other records. And the C86 tape cover. Left it at home so can't be more specific, I'm afraid.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 6 January 2006 14:37 (twenty years ago)

what a ghastly drab selection, I am convinced the British media critic-s-phere is currently at a decade low-point.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 6 January 2006 14:43 (twenty years ago)

The Automatic look SO WELSH!

Wogan Lenin (dog latin), Friday, 6 January 2006 14:47 (twenty years ago)

I think I know what you mean, and if you mean what I think you mean I think that's a shame.

That's makes two of us

CLassic or Dadaismus? (Dada), Friday, 6 January 2006 14:56 (twenty years ago)

... but let's drop it

CLassic or Dadaismus? (Dada), Friday, 6 January 2006 14:57 (twenty years ago)

...like it's hot. Which it may or may not have been, once.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 6 January 2006 15:01 (twenty years ago)

hi its me from kubb
just wanted to say "HI"

Ian_From_Kubb, Friday, 6 January 2006 17:13 (twenty years ago)

HI DERE?

fandango (fandango), Friday, 6 January 2006 17:17 (twenty years ago)

There's a football chant beginning with "It's nice to know you're here", but I forget how it ends.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 6 January 2006 17:23 (twenty years ago)

No one will ever hear of 9 of these artists again.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Friday, 6 January 2006 17:27 (twenty years ago)

"the missing link between the talking heads and tom waits" almost made me cry. why are they trying to make me crybarf all over my clean shirt? rar. jesus, i hate that band.

guydude, Friday, 6 January 2006 21:34 (twenty years ago)

Thanks BBC for providing me a list of artists to avoid this year!

Jason_Bell, Saturday, 7 January 2006 00:01 (twenty years ago)

The Automatic are OK, I guess - "Recover" is catchy enough and has enough neat little flourishes to make me overlook all the things about it that make me want to die when I'm listening to it (example: using the line "Or you'll never dance again" in the chorus of such an obvious floor-targeting song). I kinda think of it as that Proclaimers song, "500 Miles" or whatever it's called, plus disco hi-hats. I'm sure a lot of people unfettered by my hangups will adore it, though.

I kinda like CYHSY (although seriously, they're the epitome of a 2005 band!) and I really really really like the Guillemots, but everyone else on that list can leap up a butt.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Monday, 16 January 2006 05:22 (twenty years ago)

howabout Warrnambool's Airborne (yes that's in Australia), yet to releae an album, don't even have a website, but there is a smell of hype/buzz about them

But they don't say one of those customers was Rollo from Faithless/ Cheeky Records...

I'd be _very_ surprised if Plan B has more commercial upside than Sway.
