JJ Burnel v Derek Forbes

Both excellent bass players, inventive and interesting. Bass defines many of the songs of both their bands early albums (Stranglers & Simple Minds). Who's better?

Out of those two, Derek Forbes. But I can't help thinking of Magazine when we're talking early Simple Minds, and I think Barry Adamson is even better. And then that whole period makes me think of Mick Karn (Japan) and Percy Jones (Ippu-Do, Tsuchiya, Brand X, Melon), Fernando Saunders (Lou Reed), and Pino Palladino (Gary Numan, Paul Young) who I prefer even more (though I LOVE Adamson). Basically, it was a great time for bass playing and it makes me sad to think of the terrible state bass is currently in (pushed to the back of the mix, extremeley bassy soundin, and just not a big player in music).

Actually, I almost dislike JJ Burnel's sound...very dirty and he plays with a pick. Not a bad player...but not my style.

three months pass...
I DON'T THINK IT SHOULD BE A CASE OF WHO'S BEST ?
IT'S SUBJECTIVE , NOT OBJECTIVE . ( BEAR WITH ME ) YAWN !
I THINK BOTH THESE GUYS ARE GREAT FOR DIFFERENT REASONS THOUGH THEY ARE FROM THE SAME PERIOD OF POP MUSIC ( PUNK , NEW WAVE )
PATRICK SOUTH HAS MADE ME SMILE AND I AGREE WITH HIS CHOICES .
( I WON'T MENTION MARK KING SHALL I ? )
THE MAIN THING IS A GOOD SONG , AND THEN A BASSLINE THAT KICKS IT RIGHT UP THE ARSE !
YOU CAN'T IMAGINE THESE SONGS DONE ANY OTHER WAY ?.
EG : NORMAN WATROY ( HIT ME WITH YOUR RYTHMN STICK )THE BLOCKHEADS ?
HOW ABOUT " MAYOR OF SIMPLETON " BY XTC'S COLIN MOULDING ?
PAUL MC CARTNEY'S DONE SOME GOOD STUFF AND THERE IS OF COURSE STING , WITH JUST THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF BASS .
THE LIST IS ENDLESS .
WE TEND TO COMPARE BASS PLAYERS FROM BANDS THAT PLAY THE TYPE OF MUSIC THAT WE LIKE TO LISTEN TO , BECAUSE , IF WE DON'T LISTEN TO SAY , IRON MAIDEN , WE DONT THINK OF STEVE HARRIS'S BASS PLAYING ?
( LISTEN TO RUN TO THE HILLS ? )
THE EARLY STRANGLERS AND EARLY SIMPLE MINDS WERE GREAT BANDS FROM AN ERA WITH GREAT BASS PLAYERS WHO MADE THAT TIME SPECIAL .
BASS PLAYERS TODAY HAVE LESS TO INSPIRE TO UNFORTUNATELY .
AH WELL , I'M OFF TO GET MY TR606 DRUM MACHINE & TB303 BASS THING AND WHACK IT THRU A 3FT SPEAKER ( IN MY CAR )
PS , MANAGED TO GET A JJ BURNEL SOUND FROM A 6 x 10 OHM RIG
( A POOR MAN'S TRACE ELLIOTT ) IN THE 80'S ( PLAYING FINGER STYLE ) , ONLY TO FIND THAT 2 OF THE SPEAKERS WERE F***ED ! , SO THAT'S HOW JJ DID IT !
