In what is, as far as I know, one of the first documented cases of the insidious "hipster" movement spreading outside of the New York area, where it began, it was announced recently that a massive "hipster party" is being planned in a movie theater in Austin, Texas.
You'll recall from my post last week on hipsters that hipster parties tend to have themes. For example, at the infamous "Kill Whitey" parties in Williamsburg, New York (pictured above), hipsters pretend to be black people, allegedly in an effort to "kill the whiteness inside."
The theme of said upcoming hipster party? R. Kelly's sad and bizarre "Trapped in the Closet."
The Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas website sayeth:
To those in the know: You've seen the videos online. Maybe you've even seen them on DVD in a room with friends. But you haven't fully experienced them until you've rapped along with R. Kelly in a theater full of 200 friends with a LIVE CAST from Austin Lyric Opera acting out the onscreen action in front of the and a bevy of props hidden around the room so that Sylvester isn't the only one who'll scream out, "Oh my god, a rubber!"
One can presume that the 200 individuals who will be attending this party aren't actually fans of R. Kelly's music. Or black music in general, for that matter.

As if everyone isn't a fan of "black music" by now. Does this guy think hipsters grew up in caves? Does he think the caves only played Barry Manilow and English ballads?

??? Does anyone on the planet, of any race, not find Trapped in the Closet hilarious, life-affirming and WTF-alicious?

For reals. I was at a party where someone played the TitC DVD, and about halfway through I felt compelled to remark: "You guys, I know we're watching this ironically, but the fact is that he's an absolutely incredible singer."
