I couldn't find a thread like this already, so I'm wondering... what are your top schaffel tracks?

(Full disclosure: I just figured out that "those jumpy dance songs" are referred to as "schaffel".)

Borneo & Sporenburg - "Boys In Shorts"
Michael Mayer - "Amabile"
Superpitcher - "Irre"
T.Raumschmiere vs Shockheaded Peters - "I, Bloodbrother Be/The Game Is Not Over" (this really needs some sort've official title, doesn't it? oi, frenchbloke!)

etc, Tuesday, 17 January 2006 21:51 (twenty years ago)

7) Kohncke/Dorau - Durch Die Nacht (Wasserman Mix)

pedant alert. this isn't schaffel.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 21:53 (twenty years ago)

Well alongside "Love Is Stronger Than Pride" it's at least honorary schaffel - the 6/8 feel, the slightly swung half-beat just before the first of the four-to-the-floor kicks, the glammy drum build-ups. It works according to the same logic I think.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 21:59 (twenty years ago)

i guess it does, what's the Dom track you mention in your top 30?

stirmonster (stirmonster), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 22:05 (twenty years ago)

I gotta add "Fackeln Im Sturm" by Grungerman.

fizzcaraldo (Justin M), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 22:09 (twenty years ago)

Only a classic of the form from about 1997 by Wolfgang Voigt!

Actually it's more of an honourary schaffel track as well - its rhythm is very similar to the "Durch Die Nacht" remix, sounding like a skipping record a bit.

But I reckon it's the first "Kompakt" track (although it predates the label) - eerie Basic Channel dub humidity, ominous one note bassline with a slight glam feel, and unnerving sampled female German vocals!

Sitrmonster you must know/have this tune!

x-post - ha ha the Dom/Grungerman tracks are the same thing, they were released under two names. So you probably do know it Stir.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 22:14 (twenty years ago)

that wasserman track that precedes "love is stronger than pride" on the speicher cd1 is a grinding crunchy stomping monster.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 22:24 (twenty years ago)

Half-serious: Michael Jackson - "The Way You Make Me Feel"

National Roffle Association (Paul in Santa Cruz), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 22:30 (twenty years ago)

it's weird how schaffel has just died, though having said that it really seems to be only average MOR electro labels/producers that it appears on now, the instant I hear the tempo I tend to switch off when once it was actually exciting and fun, it now seems so unplayable!

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 22:37 (twenty years ago)

nice stream of consciousness post there

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 22:37 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha The Rapture have just done a schaffel remix of Whomadewho!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 22:39 (twenty years ago)

wolfgang warned this would happen in some interview or other. it's probably posted on the other thread somewhere. something about how he'd throw in the beat as an occasional breath of fresh air on an intense 4/4 floor, but with everyone doing it he didn't want to mess with it too much. and that was like 2 years ago.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 22:43 (twenty years ago)

The tipping point for me was Jake Fairley's Touch Not The Cat album, where almost all the normal 4/4 tracks were awesome and all the schaffel tracks were annoying.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 22:59 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure what was more annoying about those tracks, though, the tempo or the vocals

(unless I'm remembering wrong and he sings on some of the 4/4s)

Renard (Renard), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 23:04 (twenty years ago)

I liked some of the non-glam (as in vocally, not the beat) Schaffel-ish (if they are) tracks too
Feadz - Backtrap
Apparat - Cheap Thrills
Steve Bug - That Kid (Ha.Te Mix)

fandango (fandango), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 23:04 (twenty years ago)

"I'm not sure what was more annoying about those tracks, though, the tempo or the vocals

It was a bit of both actually I think (the vocal 4/4 tracks were weaker than the instrumental ones).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 23:09 (twenty years ago)

ok, that's why i was confused as i have the grungerman with the same title. i didn't know it also came out as dom, although i think i might have a dom record on harvest somewhere.

multiple x post.

i hadn't played any schaffel for ages and then just before christmas we did a one off techno party and played half an hour of it. it almost felt nostalgic. 'sweet dreams my lax' mixed with 'ari' never fails to bring the roof down.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 23:33 (twenty years ago)

rad. thanks for the suggestions. some i've heard, some i am definitely going to check out

sovietpanda (sovietpanda), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 03:39 (twenty years ago)

the ferenc side of the ferenc/naum speicher (number?) is pretty wicked. dubby schaffel. naum side is schaffel too.
