Jack DeJohnette's Special Edition (w/ Blythe and Murray) - "Zoot Suite", one of the major tracks that got me into jazz when I was a tyke

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 03:46 (twenty years ago)

I have a treat I think you'll like... a few minutes while it uploads.

truck-patch pixel farmer (my crop froze in the field) (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 03:51 (twenty years ago)

whee! This "Zoot Suite" (it's an Ellington composition, right?) is all new to me, and so far I love it. Thanks a bunch.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 03:59 (twenty years ago)

nah, it's actually written by DeJohnette! I know, it sounds kinda Ellingtonian .. at least until Blythe and Murray start slashing and burning..

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 04:01 (twenty years ago)

Steve Swallow on bass?

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 04:06 (twenty years ago)

no, it's um .. Peter Warren (??)

Plays bass and the cello parts. Never heard of him outside of this record.

James Blood Ulmer, "Church":

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 04:24 (twenty years ago)

I think my track crapped out. YSI claims it's still uploading. I wish that site had progress bars. Anyway, it's Ellery Eskelin, Andrea Parkins and Jim Black covering Roland Kirk's "The Inflated Tear" if I ever manage to get it sent.

After all that buildup, I don't even know if it's a song you should hear but probably haven't.

truck-patch pixel farmer (my crop froze in the field) (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 05:03 (twenty years ago)

I haven't heard it. It's 20 megs! No wonder it took a long time to upload - it's taking a long time to dl. I'll listen to it in the morning. The Ulmer was cool - I'd heard it before, but sometimes things will catch you by surprise, and this time it did.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 05:20 (twenty years ago)

You're in luck, 'cause I'm trying to stay awake tonight. I'm uploading a hot Billy Drummond track w/Chris Potter and Walt Weiskopf, and then maybe some Ben Perowsky.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 05:41 (twenty years ago)

Alice Coltrane "Journey In Satchidananda" - personal favorite.

Another high bitrate, sorry.

This is the Chico Hamilton Quintet playing "Blue Sands" (a Buddy Colette composition) live at one of the Newport Jazz Festivals. It's from the Jazz on a Summer's Day soundtrack and it was one of the first jazz pieces that left a big impression on me. John Pisano is featured on guitar -- there's a fantastic bit with him chord soloing while Hamilton pounds the toms, and a great drum solo also -- the whole drum part is just dynamic variations on the same theme. I forget the rest of the line-up -- not sure if it's Dolphy, Colette or someone else on flute. Maybe Ralph Pena on bass.

Anyway, it's mis-labeled "Chico's Chiquitas" on the soundtrack - maybe for copyright reasons (everything is mislabled on the soundtrack) Also, sound quality is not fantastic:

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 05:59 (twenty years ago)

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 06:26 (twenty years ago)

Yikes, 84 megs.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 06:35 (twenty years ago)

who's the jazz douchebag now?

jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 06:51 (twenty years ago)

Eddie Harris - Mean Greens

A sick soul jazz groove and something of a follow-up to the better known Freedom Jazz Dance. Will cure all that ails you:

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 07:07 (twenty years ago)

Why not try Pierre Dørge & New Jungle Orchestra - Bambla Jolifanti. Actually there's a better version of this tune on Real Tchicai by the John Tchicai Trio, but this version is also quite restorative.

These Robust Cookies (Robust Cookies), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 08:08 (twenty years ago)

I now have an 1:03:49 CD to take to work. Thanks everyone.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 12:58 (twenty years ago)

For my penance, here's a second-line line jam from a Christian McBridge album w/Tim Warfield, Gregory Hutchinson, etc.

Dunno what you've heard or not, so I took a chance with the Italian Instabile Orchestra recorded live in Pisa in 1997.

Scarlattina

Jaki Byard - "Memories of You" with Roland Kirk. Maybe you've heard this one, but it's managed to bring me out of the doldrums a couple times.

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 15:01 (twenty years ago)

Nice, Memories of You is one of my favorite standards.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Thursday, 19 January 2006 01:39 (twenty years ago)

I'm feeling in much better sorts now, thanks ev'body.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Thursday, 19 January 2006 02:19 (twenty years ago)

jordan what's a "second-line jam" when it's at home?

tom west (thomp), Thursday, 19 January 2006 02:44 (twenty years ago)

First-line at a New Orleans funeral is the mourners. Second line is the musicians.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Thursday, 19 January 2006 03:17 (twenty years ago)

uhhuh

so what's a "second-line line jam"?

tom west (thomp), Thursday, 19 January 2006 04:26 (twenty years ago)

It's the kind of music they play at N.O. parades (funeral processions are a specie thereof.) Sorry, I thought I was being clear. If that still doesn't do it, maybe it'll help to know that this kind of music is closely related to dixieland. Marching band instruments (tuba instead of string bass, banjo rather than piano etc.) Made for dancing in the street rather than 'appreciating' in some musty dark club, etc.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Thursday, 19 January 2006 04:37 (twenty years ago)

haha i got it the first time i was just pointing out jordan's typo bcz i'm a twat like that /: thanks though.

tom west (thomp), Thursday, 19 January 2006 04:58 (twenty years ago)

I just uploaded the Alice Coltrane track - added it to my iTunes library - and it's sitting directly above John Coltrane doing Softly as in a Morning Sunrise live at the Vilage Vanguard (both being 6.40 long)...whihc was nice. Just thought I'd say.

Great music anyway - thanks to all.

Ned T.Rifle (nedtrifle), Thursday, 19 January 2006 12:28 (twenty years ago)

i'm willing to keep this thread going...and i'm sure somebody needs to hear--but hasn't--Tom Varner's "How Does Power Work?"

J Arthur Rank (Quin Tillian), Thursday, 19 January 2006 14:58 (twenty years ago)

I needed too and hadn't - thanks - loving this thread...

Ned T.Rifle (nedtrifle), Thursday, 19 January 2006 23:56 (twenty years ago)

everyone's heard The Sonny Clark Memorial Quartet's version of Voodoo, right? The John Zorn/Wayne Horvitz/Charnett Moffatt/Bobby Previte version of the Sonny Clark classic?

No? Then heal thyself.

I'm sure that's an excellent idea, but:

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Saturday, 21 January 2006 18:10 (twenty years ago)

That's happened to me a couple of times. Just gremlins or something.

truck-patch pixel farmer (my crop froze in the field) (Rock Hardy), Saturday, 21 January 2006 19:08 (twenty years ago)

I'm trying to rip Herbie Nichols songs to post, but for some reason my CD-ROM drive won't play along, so there are stutters all over the files.

Worst ever.

Hate this thread.

(love this thread)

Øystein (Øystein), Saturday, 21 January 2006 19:30 (twenty years ago)

Oooh, aah, one song made it through the ripping process without any nasty scars:
Herbie Nichols - Riff Primitif
I really wanted to post Applejackin, but what the hey. This one's a bit darker than usual for Nichols - with the downside that it feels a bit more samey than most of his songs, but it's pretty great nevertheless.
It was recorded April 19th 1956 with Teddy Kotick and Max Roach.

Øystein (Øystein), Saturday, 21 January 2006 19:56 (twenty years ago)

That Herbie Nichols is great! I've been meaning to get some Herbie Nichols records.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 03:03 (twenty years ago)

Four days without a post. What's up with you douchebags? Can't you think of something we might not have heard?

How about Khalid Yasin's Khalid of Space Pt 2.?

Like Lee Iacocca used to say--"If you can find a better stuttering Hammond B-3, buy it!"

J Arthur Rank (Quin Tillian), Friday, 27 January 2006 17:14 (twenty years ago)

Or perhaps the Clusone Trio's rendition of Dewey Redman's Qow?

Where are you, douchebags? Are you feelin' me?

J Arthur Rank (Quin Tillian), Friday, 27 January 2006 17:23 (twenty years ago)

I'm a jazz colostomy bag right now.

truck-patch pixel farmer (my crop froze in the field) (Rock Hardy), Friday, 27 January 2006 19:59 (twenty years ago)

I will listen to these on the weekend!
