I've listened occasionaly to the rap show thing on radio one with tim westwood, despite not liking rap that much. why is a little skinny guy pretending to be like a gangsta rapper person. is this a big parody thing i have missed or is he really serious? do you think he talks like that at home?
listen to him here

That indeed is one of the great mysteries of the universe. BIG skinny guy by the way. His performances on 'Pimp my ride UK' are harrowing.

Guess they wouldn't employ a real rap dude to front the prog.

At least Tim couldn't (or can't) make his own rap records.

what's a "real rap dude", mark?

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 14:59 (twenty years ago)

More seriously, it's about the ability to 'get down' with the street, and also to be able to put on a suit and talk to the management in their own language.

Because the other option is DJ Semtex as the voice of British rap.

i wish i could remember what was Westwood was like 15 years ago on Capital. i can only remember the tunes, which suggests he was a lot less bombastic and eagerly OTT back then.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 15:05 (twenty years ago)

I remember him from Night Network. Yeah, less 'bombastic', more 'the man in black' coolness.

He's 40 and the son of a vicar - of COURSE he talks like that at home.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 15:15 (twenty years ago)

Indeed, dad was a former bishop (of Peterborough) if you will.

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 15:18 (twenty years ago)

Chappy got shot didn't he a while back? What was that about again?

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 15:20 (twenty years ago)

This means Carmody's going to accuse me of being Nick Griffin again, right?

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 15:20 (twenty years ago)

Bob Harris getting annoyed about losing listeners.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 15:23 (twenty years ago)

Did he start a whispering campaign?

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 15:24 (twenty years ago)

Westwood gets props from loads of US hip hop people, though. There was that advert on TV a while back for one of the Westwood Big Dawg comps in which Snoop is featured saying something along the lines of "Yo, Tim Westwood, he my nephew"! And he gets a thankyou in PE's It Takes a Nation of Millions... So obviously some people take him seriously.

Neil Stewart (Neil Stewart), Thursday, 19 January 2006 12:14 (twenty years ago)

haha i've seen a few of those pimp my ride shows, total geek with pants sagging and bombastic arm gestures. i figured he was on xzibits cock..
