Is "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" the most perfectest song EVER?

I mean, is there anything wrong with it? I've always liked it but lately I've been listening to it and I am convinced it is absolutely perfect in every way. Does any other song even come close to "I Heard It Through the Grapevine"'s PERFECTION?

if you mean the marvin gaye version then hell yeah! i like the slits version almost as much though.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 20:42 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I meant to say of course the Marvin Gaye version. I like the Gladys Knight & the Pips version too, but it couldn't come close to Marvin Gaye's version.

J.P. (musically), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 20:44 (twenty years ago)

i like the way the strings come in at the beginning, they sound so queasy and sneering. actually the whole beginning of the song is pretty amazing, very ominous and low. i hate to agree with dave marsh on anything but this isn't such a bad candidate for best record ever!

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 20:48 (twenty years ago)

I love the way it starts with one quiet beat of a tambourine.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 20:55 (twenty years ago)

The Slits' version is my fave.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 21:15 (twenty years ago)

CCR, bros.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 21:21 (twenty years ago)

Yeah CCR's is my fave. I don't think there's a bad version of this one though (someone will now doubltess prove me wrong).

ZR (teenagequiet), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 21:25 (twenty years ago)

They will doubtless prove me wrong as well.

You are a prophet, sir. Average White Band.

the only thing I really like about the Gaye version is the little drum fill before the verse that PWEI sampled for either "Can U Dig It" or "Def Con One," can't remember which. The Slits version is also my fav.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 22:23 (twenty years ago)

i have to say i love the CCR version even though it is the inspiration for all those Dire Straits noodle epics

Mitya (mitya), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 22:29 (twenty years ago)

The Smokey Robinson version has a slighty more upbeat groove. Not as slinky, but a little more danceable. I kiss it.

And yes, this song is the Terminator 2 of songs ("A flawless masterpiece" -- Kinglsey Amis).

Isn't there a version by the Kaiser Chiefs as well? Shudder.

Deluxe (Damian), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 23:49 (twenty years ago)

No love for Roger Troutman? My second favorite version after Marvin's.

R. J. Greene, Wednesday, 18 January 2006 23:49 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, there's the Kaiser Chiefs version, from the Help: A Day In The Life album. Came out late last year.

elgolfo (elgolfo), Thursday, 19 January 2006 02:23 (twenty years ago)

I can't stand CCR's bizarre pronunciation ("I hoid it through the grapevine"). Marvin Gaye's version, of course, is perfection.

it's not bizarre... fogerty's copping an old-school new orleans dialect!

ha, ccr should have covered "a day in the life"

I've been studying a lot of songs lately, as I have been trying to write some of my own. So far I have found that the Underdogs' "Love's Gone Bad" is the most perfect for me. Two and 1/2 minutes of brooding intro, rousing chorus, stop on a seething dime bridge, and catharsis seeking chorus/outro. Then usually play it again.

Oldies radio spoiled this song for me. No other song has been ruined like this song has for me.

Cunga, really? More than "Lyin' Eyes"?

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Thursday, 19 January 2006 07:38 (twenty years ago)

Altho that sucked to begin with. Marvin might've done something with it, though.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Thursday, 19 January 2006 07:39 (twenty years ago)

no, "just my imagination" is

bb (bbrz), Thursday, 19 January 2006 17:27 (twenty years ago)

Still no love for Roger?

Hard to like this song after what happened to it in the 80s.
