So if you stripped away all the production, who would it be?

kenchen, Wednesday, 18 January 2006 21:52 (twenty years ago)

Slick Rick, obviously. His best song has NO production.

OK, so I haven't been listening to that much, but I am still pretty sure the correct answer would be Disposable Heroes Of Hiphoprisy.

Also, it's not just about lyrics. If you strip away the production, some MCs carry the beat with them in their delivery. Many don't. We call this second group 'the ones that suck ass.'

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Monday, 23 January 2006 23:57 (twenty years ago)

no love for kool g? big l?

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 00:04 (twenty years ago)

xpost Yes, delivery is important, but I don't think all good MCs "carry the beat" -- Jay-Z raps very off beat for example, but you can tell he always knows exactly where the beat is and where he is in relation to it. The suck-ass ones are the ones who don't.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 00:07 (twenty years ago)

Well, what I'm talking about isn't just staying on beat. Even those who rap offbeat sometimes or often can imply where the beat is with their delivery in an acapella. I haven't hear Jay without a beat, so I can't speak to that for sure, but I bet he does ok.
