I've always felt that was a "winter album" and I've been playing it nonstop lately. What are some other shoegazer/"beautiful feedback" albums that mess around with changing dynamics like Souvlaki? I always thought Loveless had the cooler sounds, but it doesn't have any moments like when the chorus crashes in during "When the Sun Hits".

malory 'outerbeats', total slowdive clones.

I'd like to know too! Slowdive = gods, and I really wanna hear more music that sounds like them.

I assume you've listened to 'Just for a Day' too?

Have you listened to "All The Way" from the latest Ladytron album? It sounds very "Slowdive" to me. And it's beautiful.

Oh wow, Souvlaki is definitely one of my all time favs and so is Loveless. I've found that a lot of Ulrich Schnauss' work sounds a lot like both of those records though more digital and modern. His albums are definitely worth checking out if you enjoy Loveless and Souvlaki.

How about: All Natural Lemon and Lime Flavors - "Puzzled Into Pieces"?

i was just wondering this myself, as i sit here and rip my rereleases of souvlaki and just for a day. "souvlaki space station" is just so gorgeous. i got the ulrich schnauss albums last week, too.

I wouldn't call it "similar in sound to Souvlaki", but Morr Music's "Blue Skied An Clear" is a worthwhile listen, particularly if you like Schnauss and/or the Morr Music label. Most of the cover versions are from "Souvlaki", though.

(hey FH) last couple of telescopes lps? second the morr music recommendations, in fact they released a whole cd of slowdive covers done by people like isan and mum and ulrich (xpost!). seefeel as well, maybe. secret shine as well.

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 19 January 2006 09:41 (twenty years ago)

hi andy! the night i bought the slowdive reissues i was listening to the morr music comp, but it was all beat up and that's just too much slowdive to get at once. but it sounded good.

anyway, if you like crashing choruses and beautiful feedback, maybe alison's halo? did the "dozen/calendar" 7" ever show up on CD anywhere?

Ulrich Schnauss - Far Away Trains Passing By
Ulrich Schnauss - A Strangely Isolated Place

Fennesz does similar woozy guitar/ electronica type stuff, like MBV gone laptop- check his "Venice" album which is great.

Ecstacy of St. Theresa, maybe. Some M83, perhaps.

The tracks on this downloadable mix (don't worry, it's not mixed) might give you some leads:

Phaser, Radio Dept., M83, Chapterhouse, etc....

lots of good suggestions, especially ulrich schnauss and fennesz. schnauss even covers "crazy for you" off of pygmalion to amazing effect. there's also m83 and elluvium to look into

There are no other albums that sound like Slowdive albums. Same can be said about MBV.

You can find tracks by Lush, Telescopes, Pale Saints, Chapterhouse, Phaser, Voyager One, M83, Secret Shine, etc. that pull together that level of swirling feedback texture, but those two bands were the crest of the shoegazer sound and nobody has since compared.

There's been a few reviews in recent years (and some above) that suggest some guitar-textured electronic band has somehow re-invented and updated Loveless, but don't believe them. All totally wrong (ref: Guitar: Sunkissed).

All other bands I and others mention above are really great on their own, and are shoegazer bands, but that's how you should approach them. If you let MBV and Slowdive set the standard, you'll end up disappointed.

Except for Ladytron. Ladytron's recent album has been mentioned as being their "shoegazer" record.

Wrong.

There are a few tracks that dabble in a variation of that sound, but it's still a straight-up synth pop album, just like their others.

jsoulja, Thursday, 19 January 2006 18:23 (twenty years ago)

have you heard Malory?

rizzx (Rizz), Thursday, 19 January 2006 18:27 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for starting this thread. I'm eager to try out some of these other options. Souvlaki is SUCH a favorite winter album. For what it's worth, for me, Just for a Day is likewise an excellent autumn album.
