What the hell is "All Along the Watchtower" doing on XTC's White Music?

What are other one-off songs -- not necessarily covers -- that just don't make sense in the context of an artist's multi-album career?

Mitya (mitya), Thursday, 19 January 2006 15:58 (twenty years ago)

Elton John's "Passengers"

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:03 (twenty years ago)

obvious: "Student Demonstration Time" on Beach Boys' "Surf's Up"

Louis Giomblechett and his kerayzy friends (dog latin), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:17 (twenty years ago)

"Within Your Reach" by the Replacements, though a bit less so in hindsight.

owen moorhead (i heart daniel miller), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:26 (twenty years ago)

"I'm Glad" by Captain Beeheart etc

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:29 (twenty years ago)

Would "Revolution #9" belong here? Howbout Husker Du's "Reoccurring Dreams"?

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:37 (twenty years ago)

"Legal Man" by Belle and Sebastian - great song, but not very B&S-y.

Louis Giomblechett and his kerayzy friends (dog latin), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:40 (twenty years ago)

Which classic rock dude's mid-80s attempt to connect with hip hop is more pathetic, Lou Reed's Original Wrapper or Brian Wilson's Smart Girls?

bendy (bendy), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:49 (twenty years ago)

Can't say I'm familiar with his entire discography, but Neil Diamond's "The Pot Smoker's Song" seems pretty out of place just about anywhere.

Devil Woman - Cliff Richard

Navek Rednam (Navek Rednam), Thursday, 19 January 2006 17:12 (twenty years ago)

Blur's "Song #2"

Brian O'Neill (NYCNative), Thursday, 19 January 2006 18:56 (twenty years ago)

Blur's "Song #2"

How?

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Thursday, 19 January 2006 19:08 (twenty years ago)

"Am I Going Insane"...although perhaps it does fit into the context of COCAINE.

ZR (teenagequiet), Thursday, 19 January 2006 19:09 (twenty years ago)

Howbout Husker Du's "Reoccurring Dreams"?

I would suggest "The Baby Song". This could not have been from the same guy who wrote "Diane", "The Girl Who Lives On Heaven Hill", or "Sorry Somehow".

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 19 January 2006 19:14 (twenty years ago)

The Ramones: "it's not my place in the nine to five world" off of pleasant dreams.

Kiss: "Black Diamond" Not an obvious choice but if you listen, you'll realize that have never written another song like it.

Si.C@rter

That riff and overall vibe of a song best enjoyed at a football game after a particularly bone-jarring tackle. Blur never seemed to approximate it elsewhere. Maybe I missed something?

Brian O'Neill (NYCNative), Thursday, 19 January 2006 19:35 (twenty years ago)

i believe that ramones song is actually by joey's brother, which would explain things. i'd also like to give a serious gasface to "the baby song." gross.

ZR (teenagequiet), Thursday, 19 January 2006 19:36 (twenty years ago)

The Husker Du song that sounds out of place to me is "Turn It Around" on Warehouse. It's about as close as the band got to new wave (a few years late...). "Reocurring Dreams" sounds like a perfect fit to the band's style to me. "Turn It Around," not so much.

James, Thursday, 19 January 2006 19:38 (twenty years ago)

"Caroline Wheeler's Birthday Present" kind of sticks out of the Jazz Butcher's discography, in a good way.

dlp9001, Thursday, 19 January 2006 19:43 (twenty years ago)

%33 of all Melvins songs

senseiDancer (sexyDancer), Thursday, 19 January 2006 19:47 (twenty years ago)

Hmm.. I can't really say 'Song 2' differs much from "Bank Holiday", "Chinese Bombs", "Globe Alone", etc, that's all.

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Thursday, 19 January 2006 20:33 (twenty years ago)

The Wu-Tang Clan - "Black Shampoo"

R. J. Greene, Thursday, 19 January 2006 21:26 (twenty years ago)

David Gray: "Loving You, Hating Me".

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 19 January 2006 21:27 (twenty years ago)

Bob Mould, "Megamanic"

Myke Weiskopf (Myke Weiskopf), Thursday, 19 January 2006 23:50 (twenty years ago)

Bob Mould, "Megamanic"

Took long enough to get to that one.

Edward Bax (EdBax), Friday, 20 January 2006 02:38 (twenty years ago)

"Jump Into the Fire" is pretty far from the rest of Nilsson's Tin Pan Alley fare.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Friday, 20 January 2006 02:51 (twenty years ago)

how about "jump in the fire" by Metallica?

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Friday, 20 January 2006 03:27 (twenty years ago)

I think that something like "The Unforgiven" would be a bit more egregious.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Friday, 20 January 2006 03:28 (twenty years ago)

But you're right, xgurggleglgllg! Those two aforementioned songs share the same title!

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Friday, 20 January 2006 03:29 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but jump in the fire seemed so ridiculously funny and groovy. You NEVER hear them play it live!

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Friday, 20 January 2006 04:06 (twenty years ago)

Leonard Cohen: "Jazz Police"

"I'm Glad" by Captain Beeheart etc
-- mark grout (mark.grou...), January 19th, 2006.

Why? They were and R&B band.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 20 January 2006 04:53 (twenty years ago)

actually, I'm Glad could be Beefheart's weirdest song.

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Friday, 20 January 2006 07:30 (twenty years ago)

"Ladies of the Road" - King Crimson, especially in the context of Islands..

Myke Weiskopf (Myke Weiskopf), Friday, 20 January 2006 10:49 (twenty years ago)

Beatles: Taxman – damn Tories

beanz (beanz), Friday, 20 January 2006 11:01 (twenty years ago)

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Friday, 20 January 2006 11:01 (twenty years ago)

David Gray: "Loving You, Hating Me".

-- Geir Hongro (geirhon...) (webmail), Yesterday 9:27 PM. (later) (link)

That looks like another Soft Cell cover. But I've not heared it, hray hray.
