scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:05 (twenty years ago)

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:06 (twenty years ago)

dude has all the dub tapes in another lot. shoulda kept them together. along with the bad brains tape.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:07 (twenty years ago)

Whoa. I want the Human Switchboard cassette! And New York Thrash for the Adrenalin OD songs!

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:17 (twenty years ago)

dude has let love rule in with the roir dub stuff!

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:20 (twenty years ago)

If you are putting yourself through college by selling your cassette tape collection, you'd best be on the busking course.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:28 (twenty years ago)

"dude has let love rule in with the roir dub stuff!"

yeah, that ain't right.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:29 (twenty years ago)

i think the only ones i STILL own are mc5, germs, and bad brains. oh, and flipper.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:31 (twenty years ago)

S/he also has Neubauten's 2X4, Flipper's Blow'n Chunks, and Bad Brains ROIRs in another auction.

That 8 Eyed Spy tape is great. Wonder if that was ever re-released.

Edward III (edward iii), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:31 (twenty years ago)

I wonder how that Bad Brains tape escaped the Lenny Kravitz/dub auction?

Edward III (edward iii), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:32 (twenty years ago)

Branca's Symphony No. 1 is in the Avant Garde auction. They have made being a ROIR completist very difficult, I must say.

Edward III (edward iii), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:33 (twenty years ago)

I think pretty much everything on ROIR has been rereleased in some form or other. Apart from the Garage Sale compilation, cos it was too much trouble to track down all the bands for licensing.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:34 (twenty years ago)

8 Eyed Spy tape is indeed great, I own that and the Bush Tetras one. I think it's time I had a little New York art-punk-funk cassette fest at my house.

Daniel Peterson (polkaholic), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:36 (twenty years ago)

ROIR is like the City Lights Books of record (or "record") labels: it issued obscurities that initially look interesting, but tend to be disappointing. I get the impression tha they both specialize in content they have to pay practically nothing for. (I'm preparerd for "You are a mentalist." Maybe I've just heard the wrong things. Also, there are some classic originals on City Lights, but they do an awful lot of "Philip Lamantia's high school plays" type of things.)

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:48 (twenty years ago)

I have the "Singles" collection, on ROIR. That one would fit into that category, some of the tracks do anyway.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:49 (twenty years ago)

i think someone made a bootleg cd-r of the 8-eyed spy...my old roomate had it and played it often despite the near-unlistenableness of the transfer

bb (bbrz), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:51 (twenty years ago)

"players are becoming harder and harder to come by"

dan (dan), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:57 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the 8 Eyed Spy needs some EQing to be listenable, but it's a great performance. I had a cassette deck that it sounded really good on, as long as you had the Dolby or Metal/Chrome setting on (forget which).

There were some ROIR essentials: Bad Brains, Flipper's Blow'n Chunks. I'm sure there're others I haven't heard. But they can be very hit or miss. Can't tell you how many times I had the Suicide or Sex Gang Children tapes in my hand, but got scared off by the ROIR imprint on the spine.

Edward III (edward iii), Thursday, 19 January 2006 17:02 (twenty years ago)

roir put out the only television album that i love!

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 19 January 2006 17:06 (twenty years ago)

one of the best Dub Syndicate albums is on Roir i reckon ..

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 19 January 2006 17:15 (twenty years ago)

SHOX LUMANIA!!!!!

ddb (ddb), Thursday, 19 January 2006 17:24 (twenty years ago)

That 8 Eyed Spy tape is great.

Seconded.

jeff rosenberg (pukeandburn), Thursday, 19 January 2006 18:08 (twenty years ago)

The ROIR Suicide tapes are great, and I think 1/2 Alive is the best all-round introduction - certainly the Suicide release I've listened to most over the years. Bad Brains, MC5 and Flipper tapes are pretty well-worn too.

Soukesian, Thursday, 19 January 2006 18:22 (twenty years ago)

8 Eyed Spy, Bad Brains, MC5 are the classics.

I like the Suicide and a few songs on the Dolls.

"Don't Mess With Cupid"

sound quality = sucky even for cassette = ROIR trademark

m coleman (lovebug starski), Thursday, 19 January 2006 18:23 (twenty years ago)

Flipper, Buzzcocks and Television are the ones I've got. All great, especially Flipper.

everything, Thursday, 19 January 2006 18:24 (twenty years ago)

The End of Music as We Know It comp had some good stuff - Of Cabbages & Kings' version of "Father" was particularly memorable.

Just visited the ROIR website and - o sweet irony - they only sell LPs and CDs!

Edward III (edward iii), Thursday, 19 January 2006 18:48 (twenty years ago)

Lenny Kravitz bunched in with Prince Far I and Dub Syndicate??????

? & the Mysterians makes more sense than that!

peepee (peepee), Thursday, 19 January 2006 18:51 (twenty years ago)

That Shox Lumania tape is truly dreadful. Anyone remember the Radical Songbirds Of Islam? That's dreadful too.

Matt #2 (Matt #2), Thursday, 19 January 2006 19:35 (twenty years ago)

ha! yes, i've got that radical songbirds cassette. i never need to listen to it again.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Thursday, 19 January 2006 19:54 (twenty years ago)

dan bunnybrain (dan bunnybrain), Thursday, 19 January 2006 21:36 (twenty years ago)

Mute Beat in Dub ('86) is fairly essential for fans of Japanese reggae.

r3000, Thursday, 19 January 2006 21:44 (twenty years ago)

"Apart from the Garage Sale compilation"

was that all 80's garage/nuggets bands? it had a zillion bands on it. it was pretty cool.

that live Germs tape is some sorta test of the human spirit.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 19 January 2006 21:50 (twenty years ago)

mute beat is so, so killer.
i have a rykodisk cassette called _towering dub inferno_, which is a comp of ROIR dub. so much good stuff on there, including mute beat. but the tune is mis-labeled on the ryko tape as "dub no. 5 (take 5)." after i picked up the mute beat album i realized the ryko track is "schoolyard dub (jenka)." "dub no. 5 (take 5)"as the title suggests is a take on brubek.

my fave ROIR release i've heard is ras michael and the sons of negus, _rastafari dub_. that and the mute beat anyway.

couple of good bush tetras tapes too.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Thursday, 19 January 2006 22:04 (twenty years ago)

i've always wanted to hear those roir dub compilations. doesn't look like they're on cd.

1/2 alive is great
