sucking what?

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 19 January 2006 23:14 (twenty years ago)

1985

I think Sun City did something do him.. then we got Mistrial

(Sadly, Sun City was my first exposure to Lou Reed, solo... I didn't know he was the Velvet Underground guy until I started college radio)

Dom iNut (donut), Thursday, 19 January 2006 23:14 (twenty years ago)

impossible.

senseiDancer (sexyDancer), Thursday, 19 January 2006 23:16 (twenty years ago)

Just because he started sucking, doesn't mean he wasn't allowed to stop every now and then.

Dom iNut (donut), Thursday, 19 January 2006 23:17 (twenty years ago)

Shakey hahahah!

Lou is a tranny-chaser at heart.

shookout (shookout), Thursday, 19 January 2006 23:22 (twenty years ago)

talent is non-liner, fules

senseiDancer (sexyDancer), Thursday, 19 January 2006 23:25 (twenty years ago)

1971, Dom iNut's "allowed top stop every now and then" acknowledged.

Zwan (miccio), Thursday, 19 January 2006 23:26 (twenty years ago)

top, ha

Zwan (miccio), Thursday, 19 January 2006 23:26 (twenty years ago)

I think Sun City did something do him..

Me doo..

That incorrigible asshole :-), Thursday, 19 January 2006 23:37 (twenty years ago)

When I compare Reed's 70's solo albums to Cale's I come to the conclusion that he's always sucked post-VU.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Friday, 20 January 2006 00:07 (twenty years ago)

Have we ever done a TS: Lou Reed's solo albums vs John Cale's solo albums thread?

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Friday, 20 January 2006 00:12 (twenty years ago)

lou reed will put a plate over your face and shit on it, if you're not careful. trust me. he will.

rockaction (rockaction), Friday, 20 January 2006 05:58 (twenty years ago)

that's quite polite of him to use the plate.

I think we did a post-VU members solo efforts thread, even Mo beat Lou, if I recall correctly.

nickn (nickn), Friday, 20 January 2006 08:35 (twenty years ago)

I read his biog, apparently it was two years before the velvets started.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 20 January 2006 09:21 (twenty years ago)

I thought it was around 1959, when he got out of the looney bin

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Friday, 20 January 2006 09:59 (twenty years ago)

Good old looney bins. They turn you gay.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 20 January 2006 10:03 (twenty years ago)

That's why he went in in the first place! Not to turn gay but to turn straight!

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Friday, 20 January 2006 10:04 (twenty years ago)

Oh, now I get the double entendre, sorry for morning slowness!

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Friday, 20 January 2006 10:06 (twenty years ago)

>I think Sun City did something do him..
Me doo..

HAHAHAHAH, I'm proud of that typo.

Dom iNut (donut), Friday, 20 January 2006 10:06 (twenty years ago)

Lou had an excellent run in the seventies. Transformer may be overfamiliar now but that doesn't mean it's not great. Berlin - fabulous over the top psychodrama. Coney Island Baby is a sweet song. Metal Machine Music. The title tracks of Street Hassle and The Bells. And those live albums. To me it all went wrong in the eighties.

jz, Friday, 20 January 2006 10:12 (twenty years ago)

The Blue Mask : that's when he decided to start learning Karate and bought a motorbike.

snowballing (snowballing), Friday, 20 January 2006 10:50 (twenty years ago)

It was "New York", when the lyric sheet became more important than the music and he started getting good press

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Friday, 20 January 2006 10:52 (twenty years ago)

... I should have said, "...started getting good press and, even worse, believing it."

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Friday, 20 January 2006 10:53 (twenty years ago)

Mistrial was the first thoroughly unlistenable record.

D.I.Y. U.N.K.L.E. (dave225.3), Friday, 20 January 2006 12:45 (twenty years ago)

With a few exceptions, 1967.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 20 January 2006 12:53 (twenty years ago)

... well that's still 6 years later than the Beatles

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Friday, 20 January 2006 12:55 (twenty years ago)

Mistrial was the one with "I love you suzanne" right?

I bought the single.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:33 (twenty years ago)

That was on "New Sensations". Which was quite a good little album!

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:35 (twenty years ago)

lou reed will put a plate over your face and shit on it, if you're not careful. trust me. he will.

He already did; it's called The Raven.

Lawrence the Looter (Lawrence the Looter), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:55 (twenty years ago)

He's always alternated good albums with not-so-good ones and awful ones. He was most consistent in the '80s, during which he released three back-to-back killers (The Blue Mask, Legendary Hearts, New Sensations) before the inevitable turkey (Mistrial) and NPR-approved comeback (New York).

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:58 (twenty years ago)

Have we ever done a TS: Lou Reed's solo albums vs John Cale's solo albums thread?

The first Taking Sides thread came close:

Taking Sides: Lou Reed or John Cale

(I could have sworn there actually was a post where Tom said something to the effect of "The Velvets were the genius behind the Velvets. There are records with John Cale's name on them and records with Lou Reed's name on them. We're comparing those.")

Sundar (sundar), Sunday, 22 January 2006 08:05 (twenty years ago)

when he got the curly mullet.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 22 January 2006 08:51 (twenty years ago)

dirty boulevard - i think it was 1989

retrogurl, Sunday, 22 January 2006 09:48 (twenty years ago)

So did we figure out when he started sucking dick?

Bimble brings a lawn chair to antartica so he can sit and drink silver coff (Bim, Sunday, 22 January 2006 10:10 (twenty years ago)

Not the first or last, but the MOST sucking he ever did was surely "Soul Man."

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Sunday, 22 January 2006 14:47 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm, I think nothing can compete with The Original Wrapper, in terms of suckiness.

snowballing (snowballing), Sunday, 22 January 2006 14:58 (twenty years ago)

Well, "The Original Wrapper" is certainly not any good, but I'll be damned if I A/B them to find out which is worse.
