If you were The Smashing Pumpkins, what would you play at your big comeback Coachella gig?

I'm going to answer this earnestly. You don't have to, though.

I wouldn't fuck around if I were Billy Corgan - I'd go the Pixies route and go heavy on hits and live staples.

Okay that works pretty well, being one of the few non-pumpkin haters around this board (not that i'm much of a regular)

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Friday, 20 January 2006 03:52 (twenty years ago)

If I was Billy Corgan, I would make sure to include some of the other original band members in the gig.

I'm going with 7:1 on a full band reunion.

Mojambo, Friday, 20 January 2006 03:53 (twenty years ago)

Where is D'Arcy nowadays? The article I read said that he'd been talking to Melissa Auf...

You don't think he's going to roll out a bunch of new songs? He's got to have stuff stored up. Actually I guess that would be the ballsy thing, to come out and play stuff no-one knew.

Mitya (mitya), Friday, 20 January 2006 03:59 (twenty years ago)

For some reason I suspect a chronological tour through the discography. To make some sort of point about artistic evolution, blahblahblah

erklie, Friday, 20 January 2006 04:01 (twenty years ago)

Mitsya, that's basically what he hinted at doing in a SPIN interview that was published last year. Also, back when the Pumpkins were still around, he routinely gave old songs radical new arrangements that were almost uniformly poor. For example, a 10 minute version of "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" that was mostly a big drum solo, a droney version of "1979" with the melody practically removed, hazy synth driven versions of "Today" and "Thirty Three," etc. I have no doubt that he will go in this direction, though I think he would be wise to rebuild the goodwill of the audience before intentionally alienating them all over again.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 20 January 2006 04:11 (twenty years ago)

All of which ruled. So I say.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 20 January 2006 04:14 (twenty years ago)

that top list would be pretty cool to see. did they ever really play starla? X.Y.U. or silverfuck would be nice encores, as well

6335, Friday, 20 January 2006 04:19 (twenty years ago)

oh god i'd stopped caring with the solo album but all the sudden you've got me excited again

marc h. (marc h.), Friday, 20 January 2006 04:37 (twenty years ago)

those sound pretty interesting, if not improvements

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 20 January 2006 04:41 (twenty years ago)

omifuck is this actually happening? why would i be excited by such a thing?

mason r butler, Friday, 20 January 2006 04:42 (twenty years ago)

precisely, mason r. butler! why are my pants wet? i wasn't even one of those people!

oh god maybe it's the beer and the clogged toilet

marc h. (marc h.), Friday, 20 January 2006 04:43 (twenty years ago)

Maybe we could just arrange to have a lookalike SP cover band play this setlist instead. It would probably be funner.

Eppy (Eppy), Friday, 20 January 2006 05:13 (twenty years ago)

i really liked the closing 1-2 punch of mayonnaise and 1979 (prolly my two favorite pumpkin songs).

I think I'd be way more excited to see Mugged's set, even if "The End Is The Beginning" is one of the worst songs it their catalog, "Thirty-Three" is a weird closer, and the band is a billion times more likely to end with a jam on "Silverfuck" than "Today."

For what it's worth, I had "XYU" and "Silverfuck" in my original draft, but went with more pretty psych ballads for whatever reason.

They were doing that on the final Pumpkins tour! I knicked most of the song groupings on what they actually played when they were around.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:33 (twenty years ago)

Play Gish in its entirety and call it a night.

Brian O'Neill (NYCNative), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:37 (twenty years ago)

Oh, to answer a question, yeah, they played "Starla" all the time in the Siamese Dream era and brought it back towards the end of their final tour a few times.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 20 January 2006 14:10 (twenty years ago)

As a big ol fuck you, they should only play new stuff, loudly and totally distorted, for the entire set, perhaps teasing the audience with opening chords of “Today” or “Bullet” now and again.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 20 January 2006 14:13 (twenty years ago)

This is the perfect time for Billy unveil that rock opera he's been working on for the last 15 years.

i await this reunion like i await my balls getting caught in a mousetrap. there's no way this ain't gonna be ugly.

latebloomer: virtuous, pure and masculine like only an American male can be (lat, Friday, 20 January 2006 15:34 (twenty years ago)

I would be perfectly fine with "Drown" for 2 hours.

Didn't Sonic Youth briefly tour with a set that was simply "The Diamond Sea"? I think they did at least 4 or 5 shows like that before they started getting nervous someone would charge the stage or something.

I gotta admit, this is my thought. I'm fearing Jane's Addiction redux.
