Sisters Of Mercy video

Call me an old goth if you like, but I've slowly come to the conclusion that the original Sisters Of Mercy were the coolest band of all time.

I've obviously seen the 'Wake' video filmed in summer 1985, but does anyone know if there's any live video of the Sisters on the net - before Gary Marx left, circa 1984 perhaps?

Unlikely. Smoke machines = unwatchable, untradeable. Unless you happen to find a daytime show like the York Racecourse festival (Sept 84, used to have a VHS of that a long time ago), but then that was Goths In The Sun! *shriek!* (oh, and from a mile away and with someone's extremely pink hair distorting half the screen's colours the whole time) or shorter session stuff like the Old Grey Whistle Test session that used to be traded on VHS back in the day as well.

StanM (StanM), Friday, 20 January 2006 10:42 (twenty years ago)

I think everyone's seen that York video and have all pronounced it unwatchable.

I used to have a particularly good one of a Ben Gunn-era show at Glasgow Nightmoves.

I've only got Wake and that crappy thing with the 4 Floodland promos (Shot?). I really need to think about converting some of my VHS to digital sometime soon, but my video player's kind of fucked and very old.

I paid 20p the other night to watch the This Corrosion video via NTL On Demand (available for 24 hours of repeated viewing if one is so inclined). My 6 year old son said "Woah! Who's this guy? HE IS *SOOOOO* COOL!" and he was in awe of me when I said I'd seen the Sisters play live. I heard him talking to his wee brother later and saying "Dad's seen The Sisters AND The Ramones!".

I had him snakedancing to 'Daddy's boom boom music' when he was 2. Poor lad.

It'll be hard to take when he decides Cool Dad is just a sad old goth.

Seem to remember wasting £15 on an unwatchable video of a US gig once. Chicago or Dallas possibly? The Glasgow one sounds cool - always liked Ben Gunn.

What was the Whistle Test one like? Think I saw it in B&W once.

Marcel Gallingez (Marcel Gallingez), Friday, 20 January 2006 15:27 (twenty years ago)

the whistle test one was great. looked exactly like a sisters gig of that era. after they played 'marianne' the camera pans over to dave hepworth (the presenter) who is practically invisible as the studio is so full of smoke.

There's another video of the York gig taken from closer to the stage, but it's only three songs worth.

I must dig out my copy of Wake again. I like the one guy silhouetted in the audience doing the chorus of "Walk Away"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 20 January 2006 16:17 (twenty years ago)

The old VHS trading crowd has gone DVD, I see.

StanM (StanM), Friday, 20 January 2006 17:44 (twenty years ago)

Oh well. Goth Reverend

I've only just started watching this but it appears to be the entire video. See the youtube thread for "how to save" links.

Thanks!

Meanwhile, I wondered whatever happened to Patricia Morrison after Floodland. Here she is in 2001 with The Damned:

Pat had some funny things to say about El Dritcho on her site, last time I looked.

soukesian, Saturday, 21 January 2006 14:16 (twenty years ago)

Patricia Morrison never did jack shit with the Sisters, right? She always looks so brain-dead in the videos!

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 21 January 2006 16:38 (twenty years ago)

OMG She's married to David Vanian and they have a kid!

You can tell I've been really paying attention for the last ten years.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Saturday, 21 January 2006 22:32 (twenty years ago)

i swear to god I just saw that the sisters are playing SF this spring, did I hallucinate this?

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 21 January 2006 22:47 (twenty years ago)

IN THE HEAT OF THE DAY

HI DERE, Friday, 21 March 2008 13:29 (eighteen years ago)

Just watched the 'Dominion' vid on youtube. Must have been great going out to Petra to make it. All that and Pat on horseback! Looks like she belongs there, too.

Soukesian, Friday, 21 March 2008 17:05 (eighteen years ago)

I like the idea of the alternate Eldritch conquering Jordan and hosting endless hashish orgies.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 21 March 2008 18:32 (eighteen years ago)

"alternate"

Curt1s Stephens, Friday, 21 March 2008 19:15 (eighteen years ago)

by the "gearhead" in charge of the video's
Monkeemobile, letting em ride it tru a "dark and ominous world"

by the way don't bother trying to put a linked word under quotes, it won't work with bbcode.

Sébastien, Monday, 30 December 2013 06:08 (twelve years ago)

i wanted to say one of em looked like an old friend of mine but i had a bit of a hard time expressing this, let me break this down in real time:
the guy with the the legs crossed
the guy with no hat
the guy with the open jacket
the guy with a cool shirt
the guy with no sunglasses: ding ding ding

Sébastien, Monday, 30 December 2013 06:15 (twelve years ago)

Sébastien, Monday, 30 December 2013 06:38 (twelve years ago)

I don't know if the bro that wrote the original post is still reading but there is some footage from before Marx left uploaded now, and even a rumoured video recording of the 1985 Newcastle rendition of "Nine While Nine", which I've never seen. This is Stuttgart 1984, unfortunately just hitting the sweet spot between their discovery of the smoke machine and the introduction of the FALAA material:

I don't have so much time for the bovine vocals and "dramatic" emoting of this line-up, personally; Vision Thing and afterwards it gets really groovy. Some negative things have been said about the most recent version of the group but they fucking brought the rock when I saw them in Helsinki 2011.

(The same person's uploaded a lot of gigs from the eighties until now on youtube.)

centurionofprix, Monday, 30 December 2013 06:54 (twelve years ago)

this is much better; "Walk Away" and others from Chicago '84:

The Old Grey Whistle Test is also up.
