since they were brought up in this thread, i did a search to see if they had their own thread where i could praise their greatness, but alas, that wasnt the case.

but now, thats all changed. enter your thoughts about the best spiral jetty/REM/embarrassment tribute band ever on this here thread.

I like 'em just fine, but I wish they were more Embarrassing! (& who be this Spiral Jetty?)

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 20 January 2006 16:43 (twenty years ago)

Please note: I wish every band was more Embarrassing.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 20 January 2006 16:44 (twenty years ago)

One of the best live rock bands I've seen in years.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 20 January 2006 16:50 (twenty years ago)

i like their very "peter buck 1982" guitarings.

bb (bbrz), Friday, 20 January 2006 16:52 (twenty years ago)

i will let mike appelstein create the spiral jetty thread.

caught the band last night in philly, as they're currently on tour with myspace-hyped we are scientists. weird night -- i knew only two people at the north star, the audience consisted of surburban emo types. naturally, the audience didnt know what to make of the OC but they were polite and, i think, were eventually won over.

the band played a solid set [i dont think ive ever seen them play a bad show], consisting of personal favorites "cracks in the causeway" and "the money you have is maybe too little". they dedicated "proofreading" to the three girls sitting down in the front row. WAS came onstage to sing along with them on their cover of "roadrunner".

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 20 January 2006 16:57 (twenty years ago)

I think my friends ex-boyfiend Dan is in that band... scruffy bearded dude... drummer? I don't really like rock music, but I enjoyed seeing them in brooklyn a year a go.

ez, Friday, 20 January 2006 17:32 (twenty years ago)

Not a big fan of the yelper on the mic, but the guitars are really cool.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Friday, 20 January 2006 17:39 (twenty years ago)

i enjoy a good yelp every now and then.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 20 January 2006 17:41 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to listen again. Yelpers do tend to grow on you.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Friday, 20 January 2006 17:42 (twenty years ago)

not so into yelps, unless i think the person has a good reason to yelp

ez, Friday, 20 January 2006 17:42 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, maybe I haven't listened to enough songs of theirs, but I tend to really like the first fifteen seconds and then my interest tails off through the rest of the song until I'm at "meh." Partially it's the singer but it's also partially their default "we are making music now" mode, which doesn't agree with me.

Eppy (Eppy), Friday, 20 January 2006 18:31 (twenty years ago)

i think im in complete agreement with eppy...

yep, thats about it exactly

bb (bbrz), Friday, 20 January 2006 20:25 (twenty years ago)

This is really weird. The other day at the thrift store I bought a vinyl copy of their record A Good Ground - still in shrinkwrap, and there was another one there. Even more odd: like twelve copies of We Ragazzi's Wolves With Pretty Lips, also all shrinkwrapped, and each with a slightly different cover (all different from the CD, incidentally). I haven't yet figured this whole thing out, but anyway, I know nothing, absolute jack about either of these bands but, hey, a dollar, right? So, I put on the Oxford Collapse record tonight for the first time. I liked it okay. Good energy for puttering around the house getting things done. Couldn't tell you a damn thing about what it actually SOUNDED like though. May listen again tomorrow. OK, thanks for reading. Bye!

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Saturday, 21 January 2006 04:37 (twenty years ago)

so much ambivalence happening on this thread. i love these dudes.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Saturday, 21 January 2006 05:04 (twenty years ago)

Unlistenable.

Reggie, Saturday, 21 January 2006 07:31 (twenty years ago)

brokeback titty sanskrit (sanskrit), Monday, 23 January 2006 01:57 (twenty years ago)

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 23 January 2006 03:00 (twenty years ago)

Yes, good people.

off-topic...Measles, Mumps, Rubella w/ new(er) singer Chuck from Metamatics/All Scars TOTALLY RULED last night.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 23 January 2006 03:49 (twenty years ago)

dan, that sounds awesome. maybe ill get them to play philly?

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 23 January 2006 04:03 (twenty years ago)

well they're from DC originally, so that's like 1/3rd of the way home.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 23 January 2006 04:22 (twenty years ago)

There are a couple of OC songs that are very Embarrassment-esque. Very cool. Surprised that this band is on Sub Pop now, though!

mcd (mcd), Monday, 17 April 2006 18:27 (twenty years ago)

they've covered the embarassment at live shows.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 17 April 2006 18:28 (twenty years ago)

they cover the embos on a single. looking forward to the release on sub pop!

mts (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 17 April 2006 19:01 (twenty years ago)

What song?

mcd (mcd), Monday, 17 April 2006 19:03 (twenty years ago)

art party

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 17 April 2006 19:05 (twenty years ago)

Ha, that's the song I was listening to when I wrote that post. I knew it sounded familiar.

mcd (mcd), Monday, 17 April 2006 19:05 (twenty years ago)

oh, I see.

No murmur about the new record? Seems they've distance themselves a bit from the whole Embos/Feelies thing on this record. Harks back to the '90s maybe more than the '80s. I'm liking it a lot. Sounds much better than their previous records which is nice.

mcd (mcd), Friday, 20 October 2006 13:24 (nineteen years ago)

Pitchfork popped a boner for them this week - I have only heard the "Please Visit Your National Parks" pre-album MP3 so far, and I thought it sounded kind of like Knapsack, or even Built to Spill. The bass playing sounded really great. (NB I don't know anything about the Embarassment).

Tiki Theater Xymposium (Bent Over at the Arclight), Friday, 20 October 2006 13:44 (nineteen years ago)

i was so excited to hear them after reading all this, but, alas, i'm in the eppy/bb camp above. big solid MEH.

nerve pylon (flat_of_angles), Friday, 20 October 2006 21:34 (nineteen years ago)

i like 'em

gbx (skowly), Friday, 20 October 2006 23:02 (nineteen years ago)

I'm really digging this album, "Molasses" is absolutely fantastic. I'm kinda surprised P-fork liked this one so much, considering that it really DOES sound kinda early to mid-90s emo at times and they've always seemed to pretty much dismiss wide swaths of that genre that aren't San Diego-related.

jonviachicago (jonviachicago), Saturday, 21 October 2006 00:02 (nineteen years ago)

i quite like this album but it's all a little anonymous at times, especially the vocals
